I guess the implications of this study are lost on most people.

Leukemia risk increased by low dose radiation: Chernobyl study

11/8/2012 A 20-year study following 110,645 workers who helped clean up after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in the former Soviet territory of Ukraine shows that the workers share a significant increased risk of developing leukemia. The results may help scientists better define cancer risk associated with low doses of radiation from medical diagnostic radiation procedures such as computed tomography scans and other sources.

 Quoting: Waterbug

The new work is the largest and longest study to date involving Chernobyl cleanup workers who worked at or near the nuclear complex in the aftermath of the accident. Overall, there were 137 cases of leukemia among the workers over the 20-year span of the study, and 16 percent of those cancers were attributable to the Chernobyl radiation exposure the team found. The findings shed light on the thorny issue of estimating cancer risk from low doses of radiation – an issue of importance to miners, nuclear workers and anyone who is chronically exposed to low levels of radiation at work or patients who receive sizeable radiation doses when undergoing medical diagnostic tests. “Low doses of radiation are important,” said the lead researcher Lydia Zablotska, MD, PhD, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF. “We want to raise awareness of that.”

Radiation monitors underreport data
Hundreds of radiation monitors installed in Fukushima and surrounding prefectures have been found to show readings around 10 percent lower than the actual level.

The science ministry installed 675 of the devices to monitor radiation in 7 prefectures.

Fukushima Prefecture has 545, while other prefectures have 10 to 30 each.

The readings have been uploaded in real time on the Internet since April.

But the ministry was examining reports from residents and local governments that their monitors showed higher readings than the government's data.

It found that the detection of radiation was being partially blocked by a metal battery housing in the units, which lead to an underreporting of the levels by around 10 percent. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp]

TEPCO says Fukushima clean-up costs may double to Y10 tril
TOKYO — The cost of the clean-up and compensation after the Fukushima nuclear disaster may double to 10 trillion yen, the plant’s operator said Wednesday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said decontamination of irradiated areas and compensating those whose jobs or home lives have been affected would cost more than the 5 trillion yen it estimated in April.

“There is a view that we may need the same amount (again) of additional money for the decontamination of low-level radiation areas and costs of temporary facilities for storing waste,” the company said in a statement.

Senior vice industry minister says he is "begging" for reactor restart
Senior vice industry minister Isao Matsumiya said Thursday that he is "begging" the Nuclear Regulation Authority to enable the restart of Japan's idled nuclear reactors, a statement that could be seen as pressuring the independent body.

His remark contrasts with those of Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yukio Edano, Matsumiya's boss, who has repeatedly said he will not make "any predictions" about the tasks handled by the authority.

"I am begging the Nuclear Regulation Authority to enable the restart of the suspended reactors nationwide as soon as possible," Matsumiya said in a meeting with Hokkaido prefectural officials and the ministry's local bureau to discuss winter power-saving measures.

Exposure to low-level radiation can cause leukemia: study
Protracted exposure to low-level radiation is associated with a significant increase in the risk of leukemia, according to a long-term study published Thursday in a U.S. research journal.

The study released in the monthly "Environmental Health Perspectives" was based on a 20-year survey of around 110,000 workers who engaged in cleanup work related to the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in 1986.

Scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine in Ukraine were among those who participated in the research.

FERMI: MANUAL REACTOR SHUTDOWN DUE TO HYDROGEN IN-LEAKAGE TO STATOR WATER COOLING SYSTEM

At 09:21 EST 11/7/12, the reactor mode switch was taken to shutdown and the main turbine generator was manually tripped in response to hydrogen gas in-leakage into the stator water cooling system from the main turbine generator. The scram was uncomplicated, and all control rods, except one, fully inserted into the core. One control rod stopped at position 02 and was manually inserted. The lowest reactor vessel water level reached was 125 inches, and as expected, HPCI & RCIC did not actuate. No safety relief valves (SRV) actuated. Reactor water level is being controlled in the normal band using the control rod drive and reactor feedwater systems. All isolations and actuations for reactor water level 3 occurred as expected.

OYSTER CREEK: LIQUID PENETRANT SURFACE INDICATIONS FOUND ON CONTROL ROD DRIVE RETURN NOZZLE SAFE END TO PIPE WELD

Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (RX Type: GE-2) is currently in Cold Shutdown executing Refueling Outage 1R24, which includes in-service inspections.

At 1240 EST, General Electric notified Oyster Creek Management of surface indications that were detected by dye penetrant testing. The indications are in the adjacent base material area of the System Pressure Boundary weld. The indications are located Top Dead Center (TDC) of the 3 inch pipe. Indication #1 is upstream 0.7 inches away from the weld toe, the indication is 1.5" long. Indication #2 is downstream 0.2 inches away from the weld toe, the indication is 2.5" long. The depth of the indications are unknown at this time.
