High radiation exposure level in Fukushima resident puzzles experts
[link to ajw.asahi.com]

[snip]

The resident with the 11-millisievert reading is an exceptional case, given the fact that the person lived far from the plant. All the other individuals with high readings were residents of Iitate or Namie.

In a separate case, a woman, who was a teenager at the time of the accident, developed thyroid problems and is undergoing a thorough health checkup. Officials were unable to say if her condition is directly related to the nuclear crisis.

Another crazy one...

Ishihara: Japan should consider nuclear arms

Shintaro Ishihara, the leader of a newly formed opposition party, says Japan should study the procedures and impacts of possessing nuclear arms, in case the country decides to acquire such weapons.

The former Tokyo governor, who recently took the helm of the Japan Restoration Party, was speaking to foreign correspondents in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Ishihara said countries that lack nuclear arms have only a very weak voice in today's world. He said that, in his personal view, Japan should simulate cases in which it possesses nuclear weapons, and this would work as a deterrent.

TEPCO can handle water loss at Fukushima No. 3 fuel pool: regulators

Japan's nuclear regulatory authority on Tuesday confirmed that the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is sufficiently prepared to deal with a water loss incident at the No. 3 unit's spent fuel pool.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority had asked TEPCO to give its assessment over a possible loss of water from the pool, after a 7-meter-long iron frame dropped inside it on Sept. 22 while workers were removing debris from the upper floor of the reactor building.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported that, even under the worst scenario, it would take over 24 hours before the temperature of the zirconium cladding on the fuel rods reached 1,200 C, the level at which zirconium melt. The utility said it could start injecting water within six hours using a concrete pump truck.

Just a deal, I was looking at Radnet and Phoenix is really high radiation wise so I looked at Radiation Network and they have only one monitor up for Arizona and it says 15cpm. So it is low according to Radiation Network. So while on Radiation Network I looked at Japan and it is only 15 cpm and has hardly ever been higher. They have a reading on the coast of China for 30 cpm.

Bogus? Fuck Radiation Network. Colorado had a reading of 65 last night. But according to them we are all safe. Why does my hair seem to be thinning again?

Anybody with the thinning hair? It's just me, I guess.

If you look at Lincoln Nebraska the radnet shows it quite high and I am quite near to there.

la la la

Personal stories and anecdotes, let's share them, they might be just as reliable or more than radiation network.

Share if something is wrong that could be related to radiation.

interesting thought... when i was younger i was teaching in western australia.. the 42 heat limit (where you sent everyone home).. was never 'reached'.. it was always 41.5.. or something.. yet our thermometers were topping 49-51 in room.. same theory methinks.....

Canadian province shuts down nuclear reactor similar to Wolseong

“The Quebec Provincial government recently decided that the nuclear reactor Gentilly-2, the same type as Korea’s Wolseong #1, would be shutdown due to safety concerns and the huge cost of extending its term of service. South Korea needs to follow Quebec’s lead and adopt such a process of discussion in which the extension of operations is approved only after calculating the costs and making public the relevant information.”

BERWICK, Pa., Nov. 20, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant disconnected Monday (11/19) from the regional power grid shortly after returning to service because of a hydraulic oil leak on a system that controls the flow of steam into the turbine.

A Rough Road from Swords to Ploughshares

For nearly 20 years, the Energy Department has been seeking to destroy plutonium recovered from surplus nuclear bombs by converting it to fuel for civilian reactors. Most of it would be destroyed by fission, and the remainder would be embedded in highly radioactive fission products.

Andrew Larkin: Future storms and aging reactors
[link to www.gazettenet.com]

[snip]

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported that the nuclear power plants withstood the stresses of the storm and are safe. However, a more careful analysis reveals the vulnerability of the plants.

With a loss of coolant there is a threat both to the core as well as the pools of spent fuel rods. If spent fuel rods are not cooled, the water evaporates in hours to a few days and exposes the spent fuel rods to oxygen; they burn and release massive radiation into the atmosphere. Many of these spent fuel pools hold five times as much fuel as they were designed for. The NRC does not require that spent fuel rod pools are connected to backup diesels used as cooling systems in the event of an emergency.

For about two months, officers having been wearing pager-sized nuclear detectors around the city. On Tuesday morning something in the parking lot at 5th and Jones streets set off an officer's device.

Dragon's "Radiation-Tolerant" Design
[link to www.aviationweek.com]

[snip]

Last week, NASA revealed that SpaceX's first commercial resupply mission to the ISS experienced a number of anomalies in addition to the shutdown of a Falcon 9 first-stage engine, including the loss of one of three flight computers on the Dragon cargo vessel due to a suspected radiation hit. Over the weekend I spoke with John Muratore, SpaceX director of vehicle certification, who said the loss of the computer was a function of the radiation-tolerant system design on which Dragon relies, rather than hard-to-come-by "rad-hardened" parts that can be costly and difficult to upgrade.
