There is a god damned rule on this thread, every (at least) 10th post has to be positive. It has to be about the good guys winning. It has to be about progress being made in the halting of nuclear power. Or else the thread is going to go to hell as the most depressing thread of all time. Progress is being made god dammit!
 Quoting: WindyMind

Some.. not a lot.

The subject matter makes it depressing... not much to do about that.
There is not anything to be happy or positive about, as far as I'm concerned.
The slight changes the nuclear establishment is making for the better don't amount to a fart in a whirlwind.
The nukesters have us just where they want us.

But you are welcome to be positive all you want.

I was having difficulties but I have a nice post that is positive and I don't think we should give up on shutting them all down before another disaster.

You are correct. We could use some positivity..
I'm not giving up.. just really jaded after very close examination of the issues for 18 months or so.

Waterbug,

Thanks for keeping us informed over the last year. I've always had great respect for you since we started talking about Fukushima right after the tragedy happened. Just wanted you to know that I look at this thread often to get the latest news.

Thanks again.

The Search for Action among Japan’s Ruling Classes
[link to akiomatsumura.com]

[snip]

I viewed my visit to Japan as a chance to build a national consensus that two types of action must be taken. First, repeating myself from my last visit in April, that an independent assessment team must be created, given an ample budget, and allowed to visit inside the Fukushima Daiichi site. Second, that more than one million children are likely to end up with thyroid cancer and so action must be taken quickly to best stem or prevent this medical catastrophe.

Politicians and business leaders alike were shocked to hear that more than one million children are at risk of thyroid cancer in the next five to ten years. These same concerns about radioactivity, modestly extrapolated by experts studying the results of the Chernobyl accident, also apply to food and the environment.

Post-meltdown, containments holding radioactive material have simply been submerged in water and the nuclear material within them continues to leak. Occasionally, the public hears news that radioactive water has been discharged and is draining into the ocean, but the nation’s interest in the subject appears to be waning.
Because Japan is an island country, and, therefore, unlike many European countries with shared borders, I fear that foreign countries have taken somewhat of a third-person stance in this situation; I worry Japan’s isolation lessens its perceived impact on other countries, allowing its stagnation to proceed unchecked. Perhaps once the oceans become gravely contaminated, foreign countries will be compelled to pressure Japan into action. My concern is that Japan and other countries will fail to recognize the severity of the situation until it becomes critical.

We, the City of Sapporo, do not, nor will we, expect anything from the central Japanese government. As a local government, we will continue to do our best to save the children in and around Fukushima. We will not rely on the Japanese Government, the nation’s people, the mass-media, or the members of our diet. We will proceed to conduct ourselves with the urgency of impending crisis.

US shale gas may mean cheaper LNG for Japan

An International Energy Agency official says Japan may be able to buy liquefied natural gas at lower prices if the country can import it from the US.

IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven met reporters in Tokyo on Thursday. The agency released a report on the global supply and demand prospects of energy last week.

In the news conference, van der Hoeven expressed hope for a possible increase in global natural gas supplies.
US shale gas production is now in full swing, and she said the country could become an exporter.

Japan to set nuclear evacuation standards

Japan's nuclear regulatory body has started working on new sets of standards for issuing government orders for evacuating people in the event of a nuclear accident.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority held a meeting of a panel of experts on Thursday as the first step in efforts to draw up the new standards by the end of the year. Also under review is when to instruct people to take iodine tablets as a precaution against thyroid damage.

Japan sending tsunami debris team to Hawaii

Japan's government will send a team to Hawaii to explore ways to help clear debris from last year's massive tsunami in northeast Japan.

The government decided on the mission on Wednesday out of concern that debris is already washing ashore in Hawaii and is likely to continue to arrive for several years to come.

The decision comes after an environment ministry simulation predicted the drift pattern of tsunami debris in the Pacific.

The study shows that large quantities of debris will begin to arrive on North American shores around December.

Toshiba unveils robot for helping in nuclear disasters

YOKOHAMA — Toshiba Corp unveiled a robot Wednesday that the company says can withstand high radiation and help in nuclear disasters. But it remains unclear what exactly the new machine will be capable of doing if and when it gets the go-ahead to enter Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The four-legged robot can climb over debris and venture into radiated areas off-limits to human workers. One significant innovation, Toshiba said, is that its wireless network can be controlled in high radiation, automatically seeking better transmission when reception becomes weak.

Sizewell C nuclear power station consultation starts

More than 5,000 people are expected to work on the construction of a nuclear power station in Suffolk at its peak.

EDF Energy wants to build Sizewell C next to an existing plant at Leiston.

It would take nine years, with most workers housed on a new local 'campus'. EDF also wants to create two park and ride sites, intended for construction staff, near the A12.
