BJP urges government to stop dumping nuclear waste in abandoned Kolar gold mines
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday urged government to stop the dumping of nuclear wastes in abandoned Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka.

"They have been conducting laboratory test in KGF and we all know that there has been almost closure of (Kolar Gold Fields) and there is every possibility that the Kolar gold field may be used as a dumping yard," Kumar said.

Britain to Encourage Both Nuclear and Wind Power
LONDON — The British government on Friday announced far-reaching changes in energy regulation designed to encourage development of renewable energy and nuclear power while ensuring the country could meet its electricity needs.

The changes will gradually quadruple the charges levied on consumers and businesses to help support electricity generation from low-carbon sources, to a total of about £9.8 billion, or $15.7 billion, in the 2020-21 fiscal year from £2.35 billion currently.

The government forecasts that the new price supports will add 7 percent, or about £95 a year, to the average household electricity bill. Currently, such charges add 2 percent to energy bills, or £20 a year.

oh, wow, that's fucked up

I don't like the data drop thread situation where no one comments or anything here. So Citizen let's start posting outside of the thread. I thought everyone interested in the radiation thing would come to this thread, and maybe they are here but data dumping is boring and you should post this article yourself. This is something and no one is going to notice it here, if they do they say nothing.

:) I didn't get to Ft. Calhoun, obstacles are a good sign I have been told. My brother has lymphoma stage 4 and I am taking care of him full time. My first break in weeks during which I was going to make the video ended up with me going to the emergency room and he has been admitted to the hospital again.

Anyway, I say Waterbugs thread is boring lets start posting ourselves again. You go first.

Anti-nuclear parties seek unity before election

Anti-nuclear minority parties in Japan are seeking to unite for next month's Lower House election. Some of them are looking to an anti-nuclear governor to head a new party that would assemble all like-minded forces.

Three parties in the opposition bloc, including People's Life First, are considering seeking the cooperation of Governor Yukiko Kada from Shiga Prefecture.

U.N. envoy urges Japan to expand health checks over nuclear crisis

A United Nations human rights expert said Monday that Japan should expand the scope of a health survey it is conducting following the nuclear crisis last year.

U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health Anand Grover said the government has only surveyed people who were resident in or visited Fukushima Prefecture when the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant was triggered by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. "I would urge the government to expand the health survey to all radiation-affected zones," he said.

Finally a confession from TEPCO...

TEPCO failed to take enough safety measures before Fukushima disaster

A senior official of Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday at a U.S. panel meeting in Tokyo that the company failed to take sufficient safety measures before last year's disaster at its Fukushima nuclear complex, fearing that taking such measures could "fuel the anxiety" of local people.

On the first day of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences' committee meeting through Wednesday, Akira Kawano, general manager of Tokyo Electric's Nuclear International Relations and Strategy Group, said the company "was concerned that safety measures, if taken, might rather fuel the anxiety of local people."

Kawano also said the nuclear crisis was caused because multiple protection measures at the complex were "not enough to fend off the tsunami that was beyond earlier assumptions."

U.S. Commission: all countries, including Russia, must observe nuclear energy safety guidelines

International organizations' nuclear energy safety guidelines provide minimum standards that must be observed by all countries, including Russia, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) expert Eduardo Sastre said in an interview with Nozare.lv.

Sastre was asked for advice on how to be sure that neighboring countries, which have lower standards, for example, in environmental protection, construct safe nuclear power plants, writes LETA.

Bacteria helping clean up spilled fuel near N Reactor

Hanford crews, with the help of bacteria, are attacking an 80,000-gallon spill of diesel fuel near the Columbia River at Hanford.

It's part of the final phase of environmental cleanup at Hanford's N Reactor, where 900,000 tons of contaminated soil and building rubble have been hauled to a lined landfill in central Hanford.

Prefectures not positive about nuclear disposal

An NHK survey shows that none of Japan's prefectural governments is positive about hosting a disposal site for nuclear waste generated at power plants.

NHK asked Japan's 47 prefectures last month about a possible proposal by the state government to conduct preliminary surveys for developing such a site.

None of the governments said they would examine the proposal, while 17 said they should never accept it. 30 did not respond.

Some prefectures that responded negatively said a safe method of disposal has not been decided.

Anti-nuclear groups join together to form new party ahead of election

Political groups against nuclear energy, such as one headed by powerbroker Ichiro Ozawa, agreed Tuesday to join together to become a major "third force," a week before the start of official campaigning for the Dec. 16 general election.

As Shiga Gov. Yukiko Kada, 62, who has called for the gradual phasing out of nuclear power, announced a plan to establish a new political party with legislators and others who support her policies, the People's Life First party, led by Ozawa, and other small parties decided to link up with the new party as requested by her.

Korea Hydro Yet to Decide Restart of Uljin Reactor After Alarm

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. is investigating how an alarm was wrongly programmed and went off yesterday at a reactor under maintenance in the Uljin nuclear plant.

The safety alarm at a pressurizer in reactor No. 6 rang at around 1 a.m. yesterday, the Seoul-based company said in an e- mailed response to Bloomberg. The alarm was caused by a wrongly programmed alert ceiling, rather than mechanical or human operational failure, it said.

State regulators on Monday approved $151 million in advance nuclear costs for Florida Power & Light Co., the full amount the utility requested.
The unanimous vote means that a customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours a month will be charged $1.65 a month for the advance costs beginning in January and lasting for 12 months. This year the same customer is paying $2.20 a month.

First British nuclear licence in 25 years

BRITAIN has awarded its first new nuclear power plant site licence for 25 years to French energy giant EDF, which is looking to build a new station in southwest England.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation on Monday granted the licence to NNB Generation Company, a subsidiary of the French utility's British arm EDF Energy, which wants to build a new plant at Hinkley Point on the Somerset coast.

NNB GenCo is planning to build two European pressurised water reactors (EPRs) at Hinkley Point. The ONR is working with the Environment Agency government body to assess the reactor's generic design.

NRA to question TEPCO executives

Japan's nuclear regulatory body is set to question executives of Tokyo Electric Power Company about its policy to ensure safety at its nuclear plants.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority, or NRA, held a meeting on Wednesday and discussed a recent series of problems at nuclear plants operated by TEPCO.

At the No. 5 reactor of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture, the utility found warping at 18 locations in tubes that send water through fuel assemblies in a spend fuel pool.
