Social media goes nuclear for NRC, Seabrook
[link to www.gloucestertimes.com]

[snip]

National regulators and those involved in the nuclear industry say monitoring social media to ensure the public gets accurate information has become an essential part of their work.

“When events like this happen, we have someone here monitoring social media,” Sheehan said. “We monitor for rumor control to stop erroneous information from getting out so as not to scare the public.”

Situations such as these are why Seabrook Station’s parent company, NextEra, located in Juno Beach, Fla., now has people within its communications team monitoring social media and correcting misinformation when needed.

Clinton in Prague to lobby for Westinghouse nuclear bid

PRAGUE, Dec 3 - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will seek to convince Czech leaders of the advantages of picking U.S. firm Westinghouse over a Russian rival as the contractor for a $10 billion nuclear reactor project in meetings in Prague on Monday.

U.S. officials traveling with Clinton to Prague said the Temelin nuclear power project could bring as many as 9,000 jobs to the United States and would help diversify the Czech Republic's energy supply away from Russia.

Westinghouse, a unit of Japanese firm Toshiba Corp, is competing with Russia's Atomstroyexport, which is bidding in a consortium with a Russian-owned Czech group.

Darlington power plant refit re-ignites nuclear debate

Starting Monday at a church in Courtice, near Oshawa, Ontario Power Generation will make the case for performing a multi-billion-dollar mid-life refit of its Darlington nuclear generating station.

And the hearings by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will give opponents of nuclear power a chance to state their views.

Dozens of groups and individuals who both oppose and support the project have already lined up to address the hearings.

It’s a massive undertaking to overhaul the station’s four reactors, work that will extend the life of the station until mid-century. Two years ago, Ontario’s ministry of energy gave a ballpark cost estimate of $6 to $10 billion.

TEPCO aims to end Fukushima No. 4 unit's fuel removal in 2014

Tokyo Electric Power Co. and the government said Monday they will seek to complete the removal of all fuel assemblies inside the No. 4 unit of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant by the end of 2014, a year earlier than initially planned.

The schedule was moved up amid lingering concern over the condition of the unit that stores 1,533 fuel assemblies in its spent fuel pool, the largest number among the four damaged units at the plant. The upper part of the unit's building was severely damaged by a hydrogen explosion last year.

Complete..? Attempt to remove is more fitting.

Big dreams...

They will need to pick up the pace, slightly.
That pesky radiation is slowing them down.

Here's my expert opinion...
Shut those sonuvabitches down for good.

Experts continue investigation into active faults at Tsuruga plant
[link to mainichi.jp]

[snip]

With a major active fault called Urazoko already confirmed to be located around 250 meters from reactor buildings
, it is feared that other faults running underneath the reactors could move in conjunction with the Urazoko fault.

If the Nuclear Regulation Authority decides that the reactors are sitting above faults that could move in the future, the plant's Nos. 1 and 2 reactors are unlikely to be allowed to resume operation and may be scrapped.

The news orgs. are in it for the money, in most cases.
They attract viewers.. sell ads..
Of course they are going to sensationalize a bit..
That is a given.. I don't write the headlines.

To say that my posting headlines and links is adding to the fear is ludicrous..
This isn't kindergarten.

And, anyway... people NEED to be shocked into reality.
Video games, porn and TV are fantasy.
This is real..

With all of the pro-nuke rhetoric floating around..
A little counter-balance is appropriate.
Most reasonable people will seek the middle ground.

Corrosion At Fukushima Daiichi Explained

December 2nd, 2012 | Add a Comment
[Translate]

A very critical factor in the aftermath of the nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima is stress and corrosion on metal parts of the reactors themselves and also the spent fuel and fuel pools. In this paper we look at corrosion factors and also the actual pipes in use at Daiichi for the ongoing watering effort.
--snip--

Summary

TEPCO faces a major challenge to keep these existing pipes clear and working for the next 10 years. We did not find any records of these pipes being replaced at units 1-3 at Fukushima Daiichi NPP. The feedwater and core spray rings inside the reactors were replaced as part of the shroud replacement work that was done at units 1-3 between 1997 and 2001. (4) The pipes are about 42 years old and have suffered the extreme conditions of the triple meltdown accident. TEPCO has not proposed any plan for dealing with this issue.

UN General Assembly adopts non-nuclear resolution

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for the abolition of nuclear arms. The document also urges North Korea to halt its nuclear development.

The resolution was co-sponsored by 99 countries, with Japan taking the initiative.

In a vote on Monday, the resolution was backed by a strong majority of 174 nations, including nuclear powers --- the United States, Britain, France and Russia.

North Korea was the only dissenter, while 13 nations abstained, including China and Iran.

More than 80% of homes remain contaminated

Radioactive decontamination following last year's nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant has not been completed at more than 80 percent of homes.

Japan's environment ministry studied the progress of government-funded removal of radioactive substances being undertaken by 58 cities, towns and villages in 7 prefectures around Fukushima as of the end of August.

It says work had been completed at 69 percent of educational facilities such as schools and childcare centers that were scheduled for decontamination.

51 percent of roads had been treated.

TEPCO brings Fukushima No. 4 reactor fuel assembly removal forward to 2014

TOKYO — The government and Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) have announced plans to remove 1,533 fuel assemblies from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant No. 4 reactor by 2014, a year ahead of schedule.

The change in schedule was announced in response to concerns that the building currently suspending the spent fuel pool above No. 4 reactor may be structurally unsound, NTV reported Tuesday.

TEPCO in June reported that the building was tilting and bulging in several places, causing fears that it could collapse, dumping thousands of fuel rods into the earth.

According to TEPCO, the No. 4 reactor was offline when the tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. As a result, 202 fresh fuel assemblies and 1,331 spent fuel assemblies were placed into the pool before the meltdowns occurred. Each assembly contains 50 to 70 rods.

Britain to return radioactive waste to Japan around Feb.

Three Japanese utilities said Tuesday that 28 canisters of high-level radioactive waste produced through the reprocessing of their spent nuclear fuel in Britain will be returned to Japan around February.

It will be the third time that vitrified radioactive waste will be brought back from Britain. Japan's spent fuel has also been handled in France, but all of the high-level radioactive waste created there had been transferred to Japan by 2007.

FORT CALHOUN: INADEQUATE RAW WATER PUMP ANCHOR EMBEDMENT

The raw water pumps (AC-10A/B/C/D) base plate support anchors were discovered by Fort Calhoun Station personnel to have inadequate embedment to support existing analysis. Plant drawing specify a j-bolt type of anchor with a required 16 inch embedment. Actual plant configuration was found to be a j-bolt type anchor with a 9 inch embedment.
