Bent rod found at TEPCO's Niigata reactor
[link to ajw.asahi.com]

[snip]

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Dec. 12 a bent water rod caused two fuel rods to come into contact inside a fuel rod assembly stored in a spent fuel storage pool for the No. 5 reactor of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture.

The situation had the potential to cause a serious fuel failure accident.

At the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, a number of unspent fuel rod assemblies had been exposed to excessive loads due to sloppy work procedures when they were encased in metal covers.

Germany's wild boars still radioactively contaminated over 20 years after Chernobyl accident: report
[link to news.xinhuanet.com]

[snip]

The cesium in the animal's meat here is partially more than 16,000 becquerels per kilogram, while the standard limit is 600 becquerels per kilogram, said the report.

The reason for the high level of radioactive contamination is a kind of truffle, a heavily contaminated mushroom which wild boars like to eat very much.

EPA finds contamination at former rocket test site
[link to www.google.com]

[snip]

The Energy Department conducted nuclear research at the site from the 1950s through 1998. It was the site of 10 reactors, one of which had a partial meltdown, and an open-air pit where workers burned radioactive and chemical waste.

The EPA deals with Superfund sites around the United States and many former Energy Department facilities in the West are more contaminated than Santa Susana, said Michael Montgomery, assistant director of EPA's Superfund division.

Cracks found at central spent nuclear fuel storage facility for all of Swedish nuclear reactors
[link to enformable.com]
 Quoting: Waterbug

I know, it doesn't look good but it might be as said in the article:

"“We see no immediate risk of leakage. But we want to know how the system is affected in the long term. Today we have too little knowledge of the area.  Therefore, we require that SKB makes further analysis,” said Elizabeth High, one of the inspectors handling the case.  She added that the cracks may have been there since the facility was constructed."

We'll have to wait and see what they find.

Experts advise stricter nuclear evacuation rules

A panel of experts from Japan's nuclear regulatory agency has proposed stricter evacuation rules for nuclear accidents.

Nuclear Regulation Authority experts advise the public to immediately take shelter when radiation levels reach 500 microsieverts per hour. That's half of the International Atomic Energy Agency guideline of 1,000 microsieverts per hour.

One day after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident last year, radiation of 500 microsieverts per hour was measured at a distance of 6 kilometers.

For radiation levels of 20 microsieverts per hour the panel advises residents to evacuate within a week. The current IAEA standard is 100 microsieverts per hour.

Anti-nuclear parties fail to specify how energy gap will be overcome

TOKYO — The future of nuclear power in Fukushima-scarred Japan has emerged as a major campaign issue for Sunday’s election, but experts warn little thought has gone into how to replace atomic energy.

Environmental issues have rarely topped the agenda in Japanese elections, which tend to focus on the country’s moribund economy and a policy drift fuelled by the passage of seven prime ministers in six years.

But Sunday’s vote comes as a rising tide of anti-atomic sentiment is forcing an energy policy rethink, putting the fate of a power source that once generated about one-third of Japan’s electricity in doubt.

Regulatory body finds radiation spread projection full of errors

Japan's nuclear regulatory authority said Thursday it found errors in its radiation spread projections in the event of a severe accident for all the country's nuclear power plants after thoroughly reviewing its previous already mistake-plagued results.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority examined the data in detail to ensure there would be no more mistakes in the projections as local governments are expected to use the information to craft plans to prepare for nuclear disasters.

Nuclear reactor designs 'approved'

Regulators are expected to announce that they have approved the design for nuclear reactors put forward by EDF and Areva as suitable to be built in the UK.

The move will mark the end of a five-year, £35 million "generic design assessment" process by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency to assess the companies' UK EPR reactor for use in the UK.

Plant Vogtle reactor construction delay expected to cost hundreds of millions

Construction of a first-of-its-kind nuclear power plant in Georgia will be delayed by more than a year, which will likely rack up hundreds of millions in extra costs, according to a report from a state-hired monitor obtained by The Associated Press.

Atlanta-based Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) and its partners plan to spend an estimated $14 billion to build the first nuclear plant erected in the U.S. in a generation, reports AP. The first reactor at Plant Vogtle was scheduled for completion April 1, 2016.

Areva Again Raises Estimate of cost of Olkiluoto Reactor

French nuclear engineering firm Areva (AREVA.FR) raised its estimate Thursday of the cost of building the new generation reactor under construction since 2005 in Finland.

Chief Executive Luc Oursel said the reactor in Olkiluoto will ultimately cost about 8 billion euros, same as a similar reactor it is building in Flamanville, in northern France. That's well over the last cost estimate of around EUR6.4 billion.

"Our estimation is that the whole project (in Finland) will have a cost in constant euros close to Flamanville," Mr. Oursel said during a press conference.
