Yasutaka Ikeda, assistant professor of geomorphology at Tokyo University, said a nearly 100-kilometre (60-mile) fault runs under the Rokkasho reprocessing plant in northern Japan.

"Even though experts' opinions are divided on whether this fault is active or not, I think the possibility of it being an active fault is extremely high, given the evidence," Ikeda told AFP.

"This fault could cause an 8-magnitude earthquake, so any nuclear-related facilities in the region are in danger," he said, referring to the Shimokita Peninsula where the Rokkasho plant is located.

Mitsuhisa Watanabe, professor of geomorphology at Tokyo University, separately told Wednesday's Tokyo Shimbun that part of an active fault runs directly under the Rokkasho plant, warning it is likely to move when the bigger fault moves.

The comment came days after government-appointed experts found that a nuclear power plant in the same region may sit atop an active seismic fault.

At the same site there will also be:

A high level nuclear waste monitoring facility
A MOX fuel fabrication plant
A uranium enrichment plant
A low level radioactive waste landfillIn 2010, the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant consisted of 38 buildings on an area of 3,800,000 m². [1]

TOKYO — Japan’s only reprocessing plant for spent nuclear fuel could sit on an active seismic fault vulnerable to a massive earthquake, experts warned Wednesday.

This is a real Problem for Nippon at the moment (always)
because we need this Plant with nearly all Facilities
as soon as possible because without her (this Plant)
Tepco must think about Plan B.: What do do with the Fuel!

We can discuss for endless Times but we need a place,
like a final resting Place!
They (the Fuel Rods)would not vanish
even in 20.000-180.000 Years.

The same in the US, UK and in Europe,
we need more and new Plants
who are able to make this Stuff more harmless,
the best would be when we use it (the Fuel) in a new Way
like Food for a Thorium Reactor!

Without new Plants we will face even more bad Situations
like we see at the moment in F'Shima,
in a Way we are even guilty because our Resistance (against new Plants)
caused this huge Supply in the Fuel Pools!

Sounds like we have the same weather over here. Lots of wind last night and a bit of snow today. Since the world did not end, I will look forward to carrying on here. The work we have done is good. If nothing else, it provokes thought.
