New Nuclear Plant Hits Some Snags
[link to online.wsj.com]

[snip]

The first newly licensed nuclear-power plant to be built in the U.S. in decades, the Vogtle project in Georgia, has run into construction problems and may be falling years behind schedule, according to an engineering expert advising the state.

The $14 billion plant is being closely watched by energy experts as a bellwether for the rebirth of the U.S. nuclear industry, because it involves a new type of nuclear reactor and a modular construction method that are supposed to reduce construction time and cost.

But a construction monitor warned in a report to the Georgia Public Service Commission this month that the plant, which will be operated by Southern Co. SO on behalf of several utilities, was falling behind schedule because of what he called an unsatisfactory performance by its construction team.

The delays and cost pressures have created friction between the construction partners and utility companies that will serve as the plant's owners, escalating into a series of lawsuits totaling more than $900 million.

Seabed tsunami gauges off Tohoku begin operation

Japan's Meteorological Agency has begun operating early-warning tsunami-detection gauges in the Pacific seabed off northeastern Japan.

The agency installed the two sensors at 320 kilometers and 380 kilometers off the coast of Tohoku in October. They are located east of the Japan Trench.

The devices detect tsunami by sensing changes in hydraulic pressure. The data is then transmitted via a satellite communication system installed on buoys.

The agency says the new sensors can detect tsunami 10 to 20 minutes earlier than conventional coast-based monitors in the event of a quake occurring near the Japan Trench.

Panel agrees to distribute iodine tablets to households in advance

A panel under Japan's nuclear regulatory body broadly agreed Tuesday to distribute iodine tablets to households living close to nuclear power plants in advance.

The panel on medical system in case of emergency exposure is considering covering households within a 5-kilometer radius from a plant to be prepared with iodine pills, which will help prevent residents from developing thyroid cancer. It will also discuss whether people in a 30-km range need the same measure.

TEPCO sees delay in new water treatment facility at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. is seeing a delay in starting operation of a new water treatment facility that can remove more radioactive substances than the one currently being used at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, government officials said Tuesday.

The facility was expected to be introduced by the end of September as part of the utility's efforts to deal with a massive amount of contaminated water created as a result of continuing water injection into the damaged reactors.

Fukushima children getting fat due to lack of outdoor activities

Children in nuclear disaster-hit Fukushima Prefecture are getting fatter due to a lack of outdoor exercise over fears of radiation exposure, the government said Tuesday in its school health report.

The preliminary report, released by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, showed an increase in the share of children from kindergarten to senior high school level, who weighed 20 percent more than the standard accorded to their height.

Thanks for the information on Indian Point plant. I live about 35-40 miles DOWNWIND of any radiation cloud, IF the winds are West to East, as they are 50-60 % of the time.

I don't think it is advisable to tell potential terrorists/idiots about such possibilities, as one NEVER KNOWS what may trigger a short circuit in their brains.

Experts conclude nuclear plant fault assessment
[link to www3.nhk.or.jp]

[snip]

At Wednesday's session, plant operator Tohoku Electric Power Company argued that the fissures are not active.
The utility said the faults have hardened deep under the ground and there are no indications they have moved in recent times.

The experts pointed to a lack of evidence substantiating the utility's claim and said the claim is insufficient to declare the fissures not active. They also said the utility's flat denial of the possibility that the faults are active makes them worry about whether it can handle nuclear plants safely.

Experts conclude nuclear plant fault assessment

Experts from Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority say 2 faults under a nuclear power plant in northern Japan may be active.

Their assessment could keep the plant offline for some time.

On Wednesday, one member of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, Kunihiko Shimazaki, and 4 other experts gave their final assessment of an inspection they made earlier this month at the Higashidori plant in Aomori Prefecture.

N.Korea's rocket development plan revealed

North Korea's state-run media has reported that the country plans to develop bigger rockets after it successfully launched a satellite into orbit this month.

A rocket, named "Unha-3," or Galaxy-3 in Korean, put the satellite into orbit on December 12th.

This is the first time the North has announced its rocket plans. It comes after leader Kim Jong Un called for developing more powerful launch vehicles at a banquet last Friday.

Fukushima kids fatter as radiation fears cut exercise

TOKYO — Children in Fukushima are getting fatter as outdoor activities have been cut in the area due to radiation fears after last year’s nuclear disaster, a Japanese government report said Tuesday.

The education ministry said it had surveyed the heights and weights of about 700,000 children, aged between five and 17, at schools and kindergartens across the country this year.

It compared the number of obese children, defined as weighing at least 20% more than the average for their age and height, among the 47 prefectures.
