Fukushima kids fatter as radiation fears cut exercise

TOKYO — Children in Fukushima are getting fatter as outdoor activities have been cut in the area due to radiation fears after last year’s nuclear disaster, a Japanese government report said Tuesday.

The education ministry said it had surveyed the heights and weights of about 700,000 children, aged between five and 17, at schools and kindergartens across the country this year.

It compared the number of obese children, defined as weighing at least 20% more than the average for their age and height, among the 47 prefectures.

Hitachi still in talks on Lithuania nuclear project

TOKYO — Hitachi Ltd remains in talks with Lithuania over its plans to build a nuclear plant after the European country’s new centre-left government said it could shelve nuclear projects, the company’s top executive said on Tuesday.

Hitachi, a century-old conglomerate that designs and builds nuclear power plants with General Electric Co in two joint ventures, has shifted its focus overseas as Japan shuns nuclear energy in the wake of the worst radiation crisis in 25 years at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant last year.

Hitachi President protests nuclear-free future in Japan

Hiroaki Nakanishi, the president of Hitachi, told reporters that even in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, it would “be impossible” for Japan to reduce dependence on nuclear power, and used the importance of “protecting the environment” as one of his arguments.

“It is impossible to end nuclear power generation and do everything with renewable energy such as solar and wind power generation,” given the importance of protecting the environment and economic efficiency, Hiroaki Nakanishi said in a press interview.

It's not fat, it's edema.

WB is still with us, but as an AC.. his monika name is gone as he has used up all of his immunity from ban points... :(

New Environment Minister meets Fukushima Gov.

Japan's new Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara says he will work with Fukushima to decontaminate the prefecture following last year's nuclear disaster.

Ishihara met prefectural governor Yuhei Sato in Fukushima City on Thursday. Much of the prefecture was contaminated by radioactivity from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

New nuclear evacuation standard to be delayed

A decision on a new evacuation guideline for nuclear accidents in Japan will be delayed after experts questioned the basis of the draft guideline proposed by the country's nuclear regulatory body.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority had commissioned a panel of experts to draw up new standards based on its secretariat proposal.

The authority's draft calls for the immediate evacuation of residents within 5 to 30 kilometers of a nuclear power plant when radiation levels reach 500 microsieverts per hour. It also calls for temporary evacuation within a week in areas with radiation levels of 20 microsieverts per hour or more.

TEPCO asks for more govt. funds

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has asked for more public money, saying its compensation costs are higher than expected.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, on Thursday asked a state-backed fund for about 8 billion dollars.

TEPCO now estimates the compensation at nearly 38 billion dollars.

Went to the first page of this thread and clicked on "upgrade account" right under WB's name. I was directed to pay through paypal and then...poof the words upgrade account disappeared. It's the first time I have done it.

I would hope the US Navy will finally disclose what they knew. It's all been hush hush. I know they are tracking the health of the people stationed there during the crisis, but are not sharing the info with the service men/women. Veteran's Today had a couple articles on it. Can't link...they are on the naughty list.

Remember when that ship high tailed it out of there? Then the crew had to scrub the ship down. I'm happy to see them file lawsuits.

I just don't get how Fukushima happened and yet no one talks about it. No one really talks about the aftermath of the earthquake or tsunami either. Didn't like 25,000 people die? Isn't a lot of debri washing up on our shores? The bigger the lie...
