Debris removal underway at former no-entry zone

Workers have begun removing debris from an area of Fukushima Prefecture for the first time since the March 11th 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Coastal areas of the Odaka district of Minamisoma City were designated as a no-entry-zone for 13 months until last April due to concerns about radioactivity from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant about 15 kilometers away.

It took 10 months for the authorities to obtain residents' approval for a temporary storage site for the debris.

Nuclear regulator sacked for leaking information to nuclear operator

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said Friday that it sacked a senior official of its secretariat for having an inappropriate exchange with officials of a nuclear power plant operator, noting that his action could have undermined the newly-launched organization's transparency and neutrality.

According to the NRA, the 54-year-old official, Tetsuo Nayuki, handed over to Japan Atomic Power Co. on Jan. 22 a draft assessment report on geologic faults running beneath the firm's nuclear complex in western Japan, just about a week before the draft was scheduled to be made public by an NRA-appointed panel.

N. Korea covers nuclear site to evade monitoring: Yonhap

North Korea has covered the entrance to one of the tunnels at its underground nuclear site in an apparent effort to avoid satellite monitoring as it makes final preparations for an imminent nuclear test, Yonhap News Agency reported Friday, citing intelligence sources.

The report also quoted Wi Yong Seop, a defense ministry official, as saying in a briefing that North Korea "has come to a level to be able to detonate a nuclear device any time if the leadership makes a decision."

Debris from the tsunami that struck Japan two years ago is building up on West Coast beaches, with everything from soccer balls to floating docks drifting ashore from Alaska to California.

Peter Barratt, operations manager for West Coast Helicopters, has been looking down on British Columbia’s rugged Pacific coastline for much of the past 30 years – and he has never seen as much garbage as he did on a recent reconnaissance flight along northwest Vancouver Island with Will Soltau, of the Living Oceans Society.

One of four Toshiba/Westinghouse reactors being built in China...

Chinese AP1000 containment capped

The construction of the first AP1000 unit reached a major milestone today with the installation of the top of the containment vessel at unit 1 of China’s Sanmen nuclear power plant.

In a process lasting almost two hours, the containment vessel top head (CVTH) – measuring some 40 m in diameter, 11.5 m high and weighing about 655 tonnes – was raised by crane and lowered into place on top of the fourth ring of the containment building. The operation was successfully completed on 29 January, marking the end of general construction works of the unit’s nuclear island, State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) reported.

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou wants nuclear safety info from IAEA

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Ma Ying-jeou told a visiting International Atomic Energy Agency official Thursday that he hoped the body could allow Taiwan to participate in meetings and to obtain the latest information about nuclear safety.
Nuclear energy is likely to become one of the main political issues this year as the government prepares to complete the fourth nuclear plant in Gongliao, New Taipei City, and opponents campaign for a referendum on the project.

Cancer map may show enormous St. Louis cluster
[link to cancerkick.com]

[snip]

There are radioactive secrets beneath the banks and waters of a north St. Louis County creek that may be linked to a staggering number of cancers, illnesses and birth defects. In four square miles, there are three reported cases of conjoined twins and cancer rates that one data expert says is statistically impossible.

In the 1940s, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in downtown St. Louis purified thousands of tons of uranium to make the first atomic bombs. But the process also generated enormous amounts of radioactive waste. Sighting national security, the government quietly ordered the material moved to north St. Louis County in 1947.

Twenty-one acres of airport land became a dumping site where a toxic mixture of uranium, thorium, and radium sat uncovered or in barrels. In the 1960s, government documents noted contents from the rusting barrels were seeping into nearby Coldwater Creek. And by the 1990s, the government confirmed unsafe levels of radioactive materials in the water.

Reuters / Sergei Karpukhin

With two decades to go before it can reprocess spent nuclear fuel, the US will have to bury nearly 70,000 tons of it, a research lab reports. It comes after Congress and the Obama administration defunded a planned nuclear waste repository in 2011.

Panel to propose separating power generation, transmission in 2017-2019

An expert panel under the industry ministry will propose separating power generation and transmission units of utilities between 2017 and 2019, sources close to the issue said Saturday.

Major electric power companies conduct the two operations integrally in Japan, and the electricity industry opposes their separation on the grounds that it would damage stable electric supply.

It is expected, however, that the proposal will allow new entrants, including solar power generators, to join the business to stir competition among utilities and will expand the use of renewable energies.

TEPCO releases trove of images taken during early days of Fukushima Daiichi disaster

Today, TEPCO published nearly two thousand photos of the first weeks of the response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.  During the early days of the accident workers were temporarily evacuated multiple times due to concerns over the skyrocketing radiation levels on site, and unstable conditions in the reactors.

These newly released photos help provide a much more vivid understanding of the truly devastating conditions onsite.
