Not critical.

Diablo Canyon Reactor Shut Down After Leak Found

'Calculational garbage'
Did the NRC allow PG&E to dodge Diablo Canyon seismic licensing requirements?
[link to www.newtimesslo.com]

Did Pacific Gas & Electric sidestep what some people consider to be critical seismic requirements for Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant following the discovery of the Shoreline Fault? Whether that’s even a valid question to raise depends on to whom you’re talking.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s 2008 Shoreline discovery prompted PG&E to quickly assess whether the fault—a roughly 12-kilometer-deep, 24-kilometer-long vertical strike-slip that intersects with the nearby Hosgri fault to the north, and lies some 600 meters from the plant’s power block—is capable of producing an earthquake large enough to damage vital plant components.

A subsequent PG&E report found that the Shoreline is capable of producing up to a magnitude 6.1 earthquake. The plant was built to withstand a 7.5-magnitude event.

But practical application of knowledge of the fault, as well as a hazy grasp on how it could interact with neighboring faults, turned into a years-long internal Nuclear Regulatory Commission debate focusing on the plant’s seismic safety design basis.

@ Bug,

i really doubt that we will see falling Headz,
which is maybe okay here in Japan where
they love and adore their Teacher and cover up
everything bad he do!

By far tooooooooo many Headz would fall
and the negative Impact may be worse than
the Melt-Down in Daiichi!

I am sure that we will see a few Seppuku or Harakiris
in the close future.

No Roads,
No Bridges,
No Access at all
(the Eq and the Tsunami destroyed everything)
and maybe no one was willed to go there
because of all the Destruction, the smell of Death
and the Radiation!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42408702

My problem with that is this.

They are in the business of producing highly
unstable radionuclides to heat water, create steam
and spin turbines to generate power.

This enterprise requires extremely close care be given to monitoring and metering of the emissions, to first maintain a barrier between these nuclides and the environment.

This, by definition, would require multiple metering stations and methods, highly-trained personnel to monitor levels, and a reporting system to inform citizens of any release and levels, direction of contaminant.

Where are all of the records..?
Reports..?
Communications records.
Names and titles of managers and administrators..?
E-mails..?
Telephone records..?

Are they all lost in the radiation, too..?
 Quoting: Waterbug

Bug, you forget the Destruction and the whole Situation after
the Quake and Tsunami,
all the Employees from Daiichi and Daini was
living closely around that Plant and many of them lost their Houses,
Wifes, Children, Parents too, every single Person was in a
extreme Situation and than the Melt-Down occurred!

There was no Protocol anymore and i cant blame them
because i am a Human and understand it,
you maybe not but soon you will!

There are Data for every single Telephon-Call,
we have 24/7 Video Material from the Command Center,
we know who was Responsible and who was where
for every single Minute,
we have access to all the Measurement Stations of Daiichi.

This is very unique, unique as the whole Drama of that Day!

When do the heads begin to roll..?

indeed, your 'tepco friends' have denied much of the restitution AB, how do you feel within yourself supporting them?

(bug has other things on his mind)

i fucking hate you for supporting them.. but i am sure that we understand that

Offshore wind power generation starts in Kyushu

A major offshore wind turbine has started operating on a test basis off Japan's southwest coast.

The turbine is 83 meters wide and stands 1.4 kilometers off the city of Kitakyushu.

It generates 5,500 megawatts of electricity annually, enough to supply 1,500 households for a year.

The turbine began rolling slowly as officials pushed the start button in Thursday's ceremony. The project is a joint effort between the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO, and Electric Power Development Company, also known as J-POWER.

Group to explain reactor decommission to be set up

The Japanese government and the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will officially endorse a renewed roadmap for dismantling its crippled reactors later on Thursday. Officials say the plan will include a new organization to hear from people in the area.

Officials of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company had been finalizing the timetable for decommissioning the 4 reactors, disabled in the earthquake and tsunami two years ago.

They say they will ask leaders of local governments to take part in the new organization to hear their opinions on the decommission procedures and ways to inform the residents.

Roadmap revised for scrapping Fukushima reactors

Japan's government and the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have officially endorsed a renewed roadmap for scrapping the crippled reactors.

Officials of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company approved the revision in a joint panel meeting on Thursday.

The revision is meant to accelerate work to dismantle the plant's 4 reactors, which were disabled in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

But officials warn the work could fall behind schedule because engineers have yet to determine the exact state of melted fuel inside the reactors.

The revised roadmap has set different timelines for removing fuel from the No. 1, 2 and 3 reactors. No.4 was offline at the time of the accident.

Melted fuel removal at Fukushima plant planned from 2020 at earliest

The government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. decided Thursday on a revised road map for decommissioning the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, eyeing the start of the removal of melted fuel in 2020 at the earliest.

The government believes it is possible to bring forward defueling by more than a year from the initial plan through an improvement in work efficiency. However, the exact date cannot be guaranteed with TEPCO not knowing at this point exactly where the fuel is located and in what state it is in.

It is the first major revision of the road map that outlines the 40-year-long process of scrapping the Nos. 1 to 4 units at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The original schedule was released in December 2011, after the complex, ravaged by a huge earthquake and tsunami in March the same year, was brought under control.

so the 'road map', is

1. we don't know where there fuck it is
2. we will develop 'something' to retrieve it'
3. we will come up with somewhere to store it....

in the meantime we have a city, called fukushima that is off the map, and the populous is fucked.. not to mention everyone else

nice one TEPCO after denying payouts to anyone and hiking prices.

Earthquake Could Cause Los Alamos Plutonium Facility to Collapse

The IG also said systems designed to suppress fires in structures that store 5,600 containers of nuclear waste suffered from numerous pipe breaks and freeze damage.
Forest fires in 2000 and 2011 resulted in evacuation of the lab and the city of Los Alamos.

The National Nuclear Security Administration, which manages the lab, dismissed earthquake concerns. “There is a rare probability of a seismic event occurring in Los Alamos of sufficient magnitude to cause a significant plutonium release from PF-4,” NNSA said, referring to the plutonium facility.

Glitch in TMI alert system causes new sirens to fall silent
[link to www.pennlive.com]

snip

Ask not for whom the bell tolls, for it tolls not at all.

When Three Mile Island operator Exelon tested its new siren alert system Thursday, nothing happened.

The sirens stood silent.

The problems cropped up an hour later, when the company and local emergency officials attempted to repeat the same test with the company's new alert system.

And the sirens were quiet.

In the second test, none of the new 92 sirens, part of a $13 million upgrade of sirens around Exelon Generation's nuclear stations, sounded. The new sirens are louder than the existing system and have battery backup, meaning they will work even in the event of a power outage.

The Department of Energy announced $3.5 million for four advanced nuclear reactor projects that go beyond traditional light water designs, according to Electric Light & Power/POWERGRID International. These projects — led by General Atomics, GE Hitachi, Gen4 Energy and Westinghouse — will address key technical challenges to designing, building and operating the next generation of nuclear reactors.

“Public-private research in advanced nuclear reactors will help accelerate American leadership in the next generation of nuclear energy technologies and enable low-carbon nuclear power to be a significant contributor to the U.S. energy economy,” said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.
