JACK GROB: Okay, guys, I apologize for bothering you, but things are degenerating quickly. This reminds me of the drill. [...]

what's really troubling is that we, we have had that wind shift -- the Chairman's here, by the way -- we've had that wind shift and the wind is out of the northeast blowing towards the southwest. That's inland and towards Tokyo. And there's an aircraft carrier in the port just south of Tokyo. It's about 180 miles from the site, about 10 miles southwest of Tokyo, and they're measuring on the order of 10 to 20 millirem over a 12-hour period total effective dose and roughly five to 10 times that, thyroid. Thank you!

That's the most poetic weather summary I've ever read.

Glad those were probably snowflakes.

Reminded me of falling ash from the furnaces at Auschwitz.

 Quoting: jt. 11767064

[snip]

Hokkaido is celebrating its 63rd snow festival, Yuki-matsuri, during the first week in February.

All of Japan celebrates this supernatural harvest with extra enthusiasm after surviving what they call "3/11", the horrific tsunami and earthquake of March last year. But nowhere is it busier or more spectacular than in Sapporo, Hokkaido's Auckland-sized (pop: 1.8 million) principal city, where two million visitors arrive each year in February to see the phenomenal constructions lined up in the city's central park and downtown streets.

The main source of protein is seafood from the cold currents of the Sea of Japan. Oily fish like salmon, tuna and herring underpin the cuisine, with crab, prawns, scallops, squid and octopus, salmon roe and sea urchin appearing as sushi or sashimi at the tiny bars and restaurants.

A premium is placed on freshness, especially of seafood, and it's worth poking around the alleys beyond the ubiquitous ''sushi-streets" set up for tourists.

It is poetic, in a travel-brochure-y kind of way. Tantalizing the potential tourists of NZ, eh.

I'd be a little wary of that 'back-alley sushi' or any other kind for that matter.

Interesting that they mention the eq and tsunami but not a peep about the NUCLEAR MELTDOWNS.

They did, however, acknowledge a slight problem with the beef...

[snip]

Beef from Miyagi prefecture, recently freed from its post-nuclear meltdown ban, might take a while to recover its popular place in Japanese cuisine. Worries about cattle consuming straw contaminated by radioactive caesium have hit consumption and exports hard, but the beef is widely eaten again outside Fukushima, the site of the damaged nuclear power plant.

Following up this article..Tama river fish contaminated

Cesium is carried from the rivers to Tokyo Bay.

Prof. Yamazaki from Kinki university measured cesium contained sea ground soil at 36 points of Tokyo bay. The result shows the contamination level is increasing near the outlet of Arakawa river. He assumes cesium is carried from contaminated river.

That makes sense considering we've already posted reports of trucks dumping into rivers and into Tokyo Bay...

Fears for safety at Fukushima one year on
[link to www.terradaily.com]

[snip]

To some of the men who earn as little as $100 a day to work inside Japan's Fukushima Daiichi, the plant at the centre of a year-old nuclear disaster is far from safe -- despite the official line.

TEPCO says at least 167 workers are no longer able to work in nuclear plants because their lifetime radiation exposure has topped 100 millisieverts -- the upper limit for workers.

"There are many spots where radiation levels are extremely high," he told AFP.

The man said subcontractors like him were treated like animals.

"(TEPCO) was pushing for sloppy construction as it has been in a hurry to achieve cold shutdown as quickly as possible," he said.

"TEPCO has to maintain this cold shutdown status for years and years to come, but can they make it happen without exposing plant workers to radiation? That's the question."

Discovery of Neptunium-239 in Iitate-mura Finally Published by a Peer-Review Magazine (Nearly One Year after the Discovery)
[link to ex-skf.blogspot.com]

[snip]

A paper by a researcher at Tokyo University about discovery of neptunium-239 and other short-lived nuclides in Iitate-mura seems to have finally been accepted and published by Environmental Pollution, a peer-reviewed scientific magazine. It was made available online on January 20, 2012, and is published in the April 2012 issue of the magazine.

Abstract

Here, we collected environmental samples such as soil, plant species, and water on April 10, 2011, in front of the power plant main gate as well as 35 km away in Iitate village, and observed gamma-rays with a Ge(Li) semiconductor detector. We observed activation products (239Np and 59Fe) and fission products (131I, 134Cs (133Cs), 137Cs, 110mAg (109Ag), 132Te, 132I, 140Ba, 140La, 91Sr, 91Y, 95Zr, and 95Nb). 239Np is the parent nuclide of 239Pu; 59Fe are presumably activation products of 58Fe obtained by corrosion of cooling pipes. The results show that these activation and fission products, diffused within a month of the accident.
