Food prices here are soaring already due to crop failure from the drought and alternative agricultural land use.. bio-fuels.

Spent Nuclear Fuel a Growing Concern, GAO Reports
Since the proposed Yucca Mountain National Nuclear Waste Repository in Nevada became a memory in 2009, America's commercial nuclear reactors have accumulated nearly 70,000 metric tons of radioactive nuclear waste. Sooner-than-later, the lack of a place to dispose of it will become a real problem, says the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

As the GAO states in its report to Congress, spent nuclear fuel is "one of the most hazardous substances created by humans." And with no permanent disposal site on the federal drawing board, all 70,000 tons of it remains stored at reactor sites in 33 states. About 74% is simply stored in pools of water, while only 26% has been transferred to slightly more secure dry storage casks.

Worse yet, reports the GAO, if a new permanent nuclear waste disposal site were approved today, it would be at least 40 years before the facility could begin accepting shipments. During that time, the amount of spent nuclear fuel would at least double to over 140,000 tons, according to the GAO.

New nuclear regulatory body not to continue "stress tests"
Japan's new nuclear regulatory authority will not continue the current procedure to assess the safety of reactors for their reactivation because it plans to create fresh criteria, the authority's head Shunichi Tanaka said Monday.

"We will not use 'stress tests' as our judgment criteria," Tanaka said in an interview with Kyodo News, referring to the two-stage safety examination process that the government introduced after the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi complex erupted in March last year.

The failure of the data server does affect data input to the server providing information to the Emergency Response Data System (ERDS). ERDS is currently not receiving updated information from Fermi data systems. This loss in capability is being reported as a loss of assessment capability in accordance with 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(xiii).

NRC APPROVES INCREASED POWER OUTPUT FOR ST. LUCIE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT UNIT 2
The NRC has approved a power uprate request by FP&L that will increase the power output of St. Lucie Unit 2 by 17 percent, from approximately 853 to 1,002 megawatts electric.

A similar uprate was approved July 9 for St. Lucie Unit 1. The two pressurized-water reactors are located approximately 10 miles southeast of Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Ground level air radioactivity was monitored around the globe immediately after the Fukushima accident. This global effort provided a unique opportunity to trace the surface air mass movement at different sites in the Northern Hemisphere.

The analysis of the air mass forward movements during 12th -16th March showed that the air mass was displaced eastward from the Fukushima area and bifurcated into a northern and a southern branch outside of Japan (Fig. 3). This eastward bifurcation of air masses is in agreement with the simulation of the potential dispersion of the radioactive cloud after the nuclear accident of Fukushima (Weather OnlineWebsite of United Kingdom, UK, 2012).

A global network of ground air radioactivity monitoring in the
Northern Hemisphere registered that contamination from the Fukushima
accident dispersed from Asia to Europe (Fukushima→USA→Europe) and
to South Korea with very similar atmospheric air 134Cs activity
concentration (~0.3 mBq m-3) outside of Japan by the end of March
(Lozano et al., 2011; KINS, 2011).
