Japan could restart some nuclear reactors next summer: NRA

<snip>
Kyodo

The secretariat of the Nuclear Regulation Authority may start preliminary safety checks on offline reactors next spring, paving the way for some to be restarted by summer, sources said Thursday.

The NRA plans to adopt new safety standards for nuclear plants next July in response to the Fukushima No. 1 meltdown disaster that started in March 2011, while 48 of the nation's 50 commercial reactors remain offline amid safety concerns. The two in operation, started back up in July, are running under tentative standards.

To make safety inspections under the new standards efficient, the secretariat plans to launch preliminary checks next spring when an outline of the new standards becomes available, the sources said.

I loaned my geiger counter out and just got it back. A mechanic had it and he checked air filters from cars and all kinds of things. The only thing that got a reading of close to 100 cpm was a part he had ordered from Japan.

Medvedev, Wen agree on nuclear power cooperation

The leaders of Russia and China have agreed to expand energy cooperation, including the construction of 2 nuclear reactors at a power plant in China.

The protocol to build the reactors was signed by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao when they met in Moscow on Thursday.

Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, says the construction of 2 new reactors will begin later this month at the Chinese nuclear plant in Jiangsu Province.

TEPCO releases radiation exposure by age groups

Tokyo Electric Power Company says a teenage worker at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was exposed to radiation levels at least 50 times higher than Japan's maximum permissible dose for the general public.

The annual maximum radiation exposure limit for the public is set at one millisievert.

The utility company disclosed data on Thursday that it submitted to the World Health Organization in March. The data includes details of the radiation doses that workers were exposed to at the plant.

A total of 20,103 workers took part in post-disaster operations between March 2011 and the end of January this year.

The youngest was aged 18 while the oldest was 84. Those in their teens numbered 64. One of them was exposed to a cumulative radiation dose of 56.89 millisieverts, the highest for his age group.

A TEPCO employee in his 30s received 678.8 millisieverts, the highest dose among all the workers.

Those in their 20s were exposed to an average dose of 15.86 millisieverts, the highest among all the age groups.

Workers in their 40s were the largest group at 5,893. They had an average exposure of 11.64 millisieverts.

Robot with deft arms developed for decommissioning

A Japanese company has developed a robot that can accomplish complex tasks despite high radiation. This kind of robot is necessary to decommission reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries unveiled the robot in Kobe, western Japan on Thursday.

The robot is built on a platform with tracks on the side. These enable it to move over debris.

The robot is equipped with 2 arms that can perform work as complicated as human arms are able to do. The arms can be fitted with various tools to sever and remove broken pipes and rubble at the damaged Fukushima reactors.

Dangerous fault alleged 25 years ago at Shika nuclear plant site

Experts had said there was a dangerous fault at the planned site of the Shika nuclear plant in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1987, well before a similar suspicion arose earlier this year, according to government documents given Friday.

The previous claim had been left unaddressed until the government stated in July that a fault beneath the first reactor of the two-reactor nuclear plant was active and dangerous, triggering a detailed survey by the plant's operator, Hokuriku Electric Power Co.

Sellafield to create 500 extra jobs to speed up decommissioning of reactors

Nuclear firm's announcement comes as government scales down its own expectation of new reactors being built in UK

Up to 500 jobs are to be created at Sellafield in Cumbria – recently described as a "nuclear slum" – to speed up work on decommissioning radioactive plant and equipment dating back to the beginning of the cold war.

Tennesee Valley Authority Pressed for Details on Nuclear Plant Flood Safety

Nuclear power plant regulators want more specific information from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)  on how the utility plans to protect reactors in case of severe flooding.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission heard TVA’s flood plans earlier this week and scheduled another meeting on Dec. 13, seeking more information.

An NRC project manager at the meeting in Atlanta asked why the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant at Spring City, Tenn., should be allowed to continue operating, saying a ring of temporary crushed stone baskets has gaps.

I was just looking at this again..
21 quakes..aftershocks.. whatever.. starting with the 7.3.

They are all in the same general area as the 7.3 except for one to the northwest a bit.
The quakes are usually spread out randomly. This is different.

If you go to the end of the simulation.. it will list them all for rollover view.

There hasn't been anything over a 7 since july of 2011..
I don't think this is over, considering this..

Russia to build new gas pipeline to Europe

Russia has begun building a new pipeline to supply natural gas to Europe.

The 900-kilometer line is called South Stream. It will link southern Russia and eastern Bulgaria across the bottom of the Black Sea.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in the Russian Black Sea resort town of Anapa, a starting point of the pipeline, on Friday. Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of other countries attended.

Putin said South Stream will create conditions for safe and unlimited deliveries of Russian gas to its key consumers in Europe.

No problems reported at nuclear plants after quake: IAEA

VIENNA — The U.N. atomic agency said it had been informed by Japanese authorities that no problems had been detected at nuclear power plants in the region nearest to the epicenter of Friday’s earthquake.

A 7.3 magnitude quake centered off northeastern Japan shook buildings as far away as Tokyo and triggered a one-meter tsunami in an area devastated by last year’s Fukushima disaster, but there were no reports of deaths or serious damage.

Hiroshima mayor, governor protest U.S. subcritical nuclear test

Hiroshima Gov. Hidehiko Yuzaki and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui condemned the United States on Friday for conducting a subcritical nuclear test at a Nevada test site Wednesday, sending their letters of protest to U.S. President Barack Obama.

Matsui, the mayor of the city that suffered the world's first atomic bombing in World War II, said in his letter of protest that the test can be taken as expression of the United States' intention to keep possessing nuclear weapons and runs counter to the wish of many people for abolition of nuclear weapons.
