Second survey at Ohi nuclear plant

Experts from Japan's nuclear regulatory body have conducted a second inspection at the country's only online nuclear power plant, to determine whether fissures at the facility are active faults.

The five-member Nuclear Regulation Authority team inspected a trench on Friday at the Ohi plant in Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan.

In the first inspection in November, the team was unable to determine whether or not one of the fissures beneath the plant was an active fault.

The team ordered the plant's operator, Kansai Electric, to double the length of the trench to 100 meters for further inspection.

Fault survey at Ohi plant may take months

A senior official from Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has suggested surveys at the country's only online nuclear plant may take months before experts determine whether fissures at the facility are parts of an active fault or not.

Kunihiko Shimazaki, a commissioner from the regulatory body, made the announcement on Friday, after a 5 member team he is leading conducted an inspection at the Ohi plant in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan.

Shimazaki said the team plans to analyze what they have studied at the trench dug in the northern part of the plant's site, but he added a conclusion won't be easy to obtain.

Toshiba in talks to sell 16% of Westinghouse

TOKYO--Toshiba Corp. is in talks with three parties about selling up to a 16% stake in Westinghouse Electric Co., in which it owns 67%, but intends to keep a controlling stake in the U.S. manufacturer of nuclear power facilities, Toshiba's president said Thursday.

The three parties "have made very good offers," President Norio Sasaki told Dow Jones Newswires. The parties include companies outside the U.S., he added.

Mayor of evacuated town opposes restart of nuclear plants

The mayor of a town that remains off-limits after last year's Fukushima nuclear crisis renewed his opposition Friday to future restarts of nuclear power plants in Japan.

"The government's apparent stance to give priority to restarts hurts the feelings of people in Fukushima Prefecture," Tomioka Mayor Katsuya Endo told a meeting with senior vice environment ministers of the Cabinet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe launched Wednesday.

"Fukushima is absolutely opposed to the government's plan to restart nuclear plants without consensus based on people's discussions," Endo told Shinji Inoue and Kazunori Tanaka from Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Old news that already has its own threads... just another source...

8 U.S. sailors sue Japanese gov't, TEPCO for lying about radiation

SAN DIEGO — Eight crew members of the USS Ronald Reagan are suing the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) for lying to them about the radiation levels to which they were exposed during rescue operations near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant last year.

In a suit filed in San Diego this week, lead plaintiff Lindsay R Cooper accused TEPCO of intentionally concealing the dangerous levels of radiation in the environment from U.S. Navy rescue crews working as part of “Operation Tomodachi” off the coast of the Tohoku region following the devastating series of earthquakes and tsunami that resulted in the nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011.

According to Courthouse News Service, the plaintiffs assert that the government and TEPCO possessed data about the radiation leakage that they suppressed, thus willfully exposing Navy rescue workers of the U.S.S Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier based in San Diego, to dangerous levels of radiation. The suit claims that TEPCO covered up data
suggesting that rescue workers would be exposed to the same amount of radiation that resulted in cancer at Chernobyl.

The sailors are each seeking $10 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages for fraud, negligence, strict liability, failure to warn, public and private nuisance and defective design, Courthouse News Service reported. The suit also calls for TEPCO to establish a fund of $100 million to pay for the medical expenses of crew who they say face “additional and irreparable harm to their life expectancy, which has been shortened and cannot be restored to its prior condition.”

Abe inspects crisis-hit Fukushima nuke plant

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday inspected the Fukushima Daiichi plant in northeastern Japan, where the country's worst nuclear crisis has unfolded.

His trip to the plant in Fukushima Prefecture immediately after he launched his Cabinet Wednesday is aimed at demonstrating his government is serious about speeding up postdisaster reconstruction efforts while tackling other key issues such as reviving the country's stagnant economy, his aides said earlier.

Japan to cautiously turn to nuclear power after bitter experience

Japan appears to be heading toward a gradual revival of nuclear power generation under a new government supportive of retaining it, but the outlook for the industry in 2013 is unclear with antinuclear sentiment still lingering among the public after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster.

The new government led by the Liberal Democratic Party has already signaled that it has no intention of following in the footsteps of the Democratic Party of Japan government over energy policy. The previous government aimed at phasing out nuclear power in the 2030s.

The IDIOTS who KNEW about the nuclear disaster were NOT willing to face reality at the time OR, admit they DON'T have the educational level in nuclear physics to make ANY reasonable conclusions.

I went to several neighbors, closest with two VERY young children, and gave them a sheet with all the remedies listed by Emerald Eyes in early April, 2011 for reducing the affects of some of the fallout particles, what gets them OUT of the body faster, and/or interferes with their affect on the cells of the body.

The one with the small children was polite BUT, asked NO INTELLIGENT questions or ever followed up on my paper that I know of. Another 'shot the messenger' to relieve his two brain cell confusion, which he assumed didn't show

They will get NO future help from me or mine, when CUMULATIVE radiation surpasses the 50 rad mark and symptoms show up. SAD for the kids, but that is their choice when confronted with LACK OF knowledge on deadly subjects.

Expect very soon we will have a LOT MORE radiation fallout when reactor 4 goes down.

Abe visits Fukushima plant; pledges full support for clean-up effort

FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI — The clean-up at Fukushima after its tsunami-sparked nuclear meltdowns is unlike anything humanity has ever tried, Japan’s prime minister said Saturday during a tour of the plant.

“The massive work toward decommissioning is an unprecedented challenge in human history,” the newly-elected Shinzo Abe said. “Success in the decommissioning will lead to the reconstruction of Fukushima and Japan.”

Dressed in a protective suit and wearing a face mask, Abe was taken by bus to see two of the damaged reactors.

Dock on Washington shore resembles one from Japan

A scientist who examined the dock that recently washed ashore on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula says it looks just like another one that came ashore on a Pacific Northwest beach last summer, suggesting it also is a piece of tsunami debris from Japan.

John Chapman, an assistant professor of fisheries at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, said Friday the Washington dock found earlier this month has the same dimensions and configuration as the one found near Newport, Oregon. The Oregon dock broke loose from a Japanese fishing port in 2011.

Japanese-French JV seeks Turkey nuclear reactor order

A joint venture between Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and its French partner Areva SA is preparing to offer to sell Ankara nuclear reactors to be installed in a planned second nuclear power plant in Turkey, The Nikkei reported on Thursday, quoting an anonymous Turkish government source.

The Turkish government official, who spoke to Nikkei, claimed that a joint venture (JV) of Mitsubishi and Areva, named Atmea, has mulled offering to sell middle-sized reactors to Turkey. The JV had earlier sold a similar nuclear reactor to Jordan.
