Southern OR User ID: 20471008 United States 12/29/2012 09:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dock on Washington shore resembles one from Japan Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30558272 A scientist who examined the dock that recently washed ashore on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula says it looks just like another one that came ashore on a Pacific Northwest beach last summer, suggesting it also is a piece of tsunami debris from Japan. John Chapman, an assistant professor of fisheries at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, said Friday the Washington dock found earlier this month has the same dimensions and configuration as the one found near Newport, Oregon. The Oregon dock broke loose from a Japanese fishing port in 2011. [link to www.japantoday.com] . The good news is this one does not have any invasive species on it. Anonymous Coward User ID: 30558272 Sweden 12/30/2012 08:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Experts yet to reach conclusion on crush zone Experts from Japan's nuclear regulatory body are trying to determine whether there are any active faults running underneath the country's only online nuclear power plant. A Nuclear Regulation Authority team ended a 2-day survey at the Ohi plant in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan on Saturday. The 5-member team, led by the regulatory body's commissioner Kunihiko Shimazaki, examined a recently dug trench in the northern part of the plant's premises. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

After inspecting the plant on Saturday, Abe told the workers that Fukushima, and Japan as a whole, will only be on the road to recovery after the workers succeed in decommissioning the plant. He pledged to provide full government backing. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 30558272 Sweden 12/30/2012 08:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nowhere to use Japan's growing plutonium stockpile ROKKASHO — How is an nuclear-powered island nation riddled with fault lines supposed to handle its nuclear waste? Part of the answer was supposed to come from this windswept village along Japan’s northern coast. By hosting a high-tech facility that would convert spent fuel into a plutonium-uranium mix designed for the next generation of reactors, Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture was supposed to provide fuel while minimizing nuclear waste storage problems. Those ambitions are falling apart because years of attempts to build a “fast breeder” reactor, which would use the reprocessed fuel, appear to be ending in failure. [link to www.japantoday.com] . |

Mitsubishi Heavy and Areva plan to sell the Atmea 1, a midsize nuclear reactor the two sides have jointly developed, through negotiations between the Japanese and Turkish governments, Dow Jones Newswires reported. The bid for the NPP to be built in Turkey's Black Sea city of Sinop will be the French-Japanese alliance's second attempt to export nuclear reactors to a country in the Middle East, following the successful sale of reactors in Jordan. Anonymous Coward User ID: 30887249 Japan 12/31/2012 05:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Demonstrators protest Abe Cabinet review of zero nuclear policy Anti-nuclear energy demonstrators defied the drizzly weather in front of the Prime Minister's Office on the evening of Dec. 28, marking their first weekly protest since the second Abe Cabinet took office earlier this week. Filling the sidewalks near the premier's office in Tokyo's Nagatacho district, the demonstrators repeatedly chanted, "No to nuclear power" and "Listen to the voices of the people," in protest against the new administration's announced review of the previous Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ)-led government's pledge to end nuclear power in Japan by the 2030s. "Before bringing Japan back to what it was, first bring Fukushima back to us," read one of the placards raised by demonstrators, apparently poking fun at Abe's House of Representatives election campaign slogan of "regaining Japan." A 64-year-old taxi driver from Tokyo's Edogawa Ward took a day off work to join the protest, thinking, "I should demonstrate my will." [link to mainichi.jp] Japanese researchers make radioactive cesium glow in dark with new compound Japanese scientists unveiled a chemical compound on Dec. 20 that causes cesium to glow pale blue when exposed to ultraviolet light -- possibly making detection and cleanup of the radioactive element from the Fukushima nuclear disaster more efficient. "We can now confirm contaminated spots that hitherto went undetected, and also bring down decontamination costs significantly," said Taizo Mori, a researcher at the National Institute for Material Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the compound was developed. Cesium 137 was one of the primary radioactive contamin10+件ants released in the nuclear disaster, triggered by the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. [link to mainichi.jp] |

It says nearly 60 percent of them were aftershocks from last year's giant quake. The agency said, as of Sunday, 3,134 quakes had been felt across Japan. That's about 1,000 more than the annual average from 2001 to 2010. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 30558272 Sweden 12/31/2012 09:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | U.S. nuclear special team sent to Japan right after 3.11 The United States sent a special nuclear response team trained to handle nuclear accidents and terrorism to Japan right after the outbreak of the March 2011 nuclear disaster, but Japan was slow to make use of radiation data from the unit, according to U.S. and Japanese government sources. This was the first dispatch of the Consequence Management Response Team (CMRT) for an emergency outside the United States. The team, affiliated with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a semi-autonomous agency of the Energy Department, is tasked with dealing with nuclear accidents and terrorism in the United States by detecting and analyzing radiation contamination. The Japanese government, however, did not acknowledge the significance of the team's mission and failed to immediately utilize the initial data provided by the team for evacuation of residents living around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
