Ethical.... nah.
Is this who you want handling nuclear waste..?

Harold Simmons’ nuclear waste committee fined for violating campaign finance law
[link to trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com]

[snip]

The problem was that the PAC didn’t qualify as a legal PAC. The law requires that PACs have at least 10 contributors. The WCS PAC had only one — Simmons, who deposited $100,000 and then dispensed money to favored political candidates. Waste Control Specialists operates a nuclear-waste dump in West Texas.

SRS factory years behind schedule, millions over budget
[link to www.thestate.com]

[snip]

Nearly four years after its expected completion date, a processing plant that is vital to cleaning up deadly nuclear waste near Aiken is only 65 percent finished and hundreds of millions of dollars in the red.

The Savannah River Site’s salt-waste processing plant originally was scheduled for completion in 2009, but problems with its design and the types of materials needed in the facility have delayed work and sent costs skyrocketing.

Early U.S. Department of Energy estimates placed the project’s cost at $440 million. The cost later was revised to $900 million, agency records show. Today, it has risen to $1.3 billion, according to a November status report by the Energy Department.

That’s an important pocketbook issue for taxpayers.

Lawmakers move to repeal pay now for nuclear later law

You're about to pay more on your electric bill if you're a Florida Power and Light or Progress Energy customer.
The companies are raising rates to help pay for new nuclear reactors that may actually never be built.

Under Florida law, utility companies can charge you now for nuclear later.

“They've scratched their head and said, 'now, wait a second - you're talking about $24 billion, with plants that may not be built before 2025'. Some of the customers and consumers are going to be dead by then,” she said.

That's pretty good advice. I smoked pretty regular from 17 to 21 years old, but then grew out of it. I'm 45 now and have a different view as a parent. Our youngest has struggled with severe anxiety and does not approve of psych drugs. She was on them for a bit but came to us with way too much info to ignore. I agree with pot as a medicinal property, but I do disagree with being sneaky, and stinking up my house. I agree pot is better than booze, and is not necessarily a gateway drug to the harder stuff. I'm hoping everything turns out ok, I'd hate to see this turn into much more than it should be.

That was my thought as well. I just told them "this will never be done in the house again". I will leave it up to them to determine if that included the patio and backyard. I'm not against it completely, I just don't want 30 year old stoners still living at home. I am looking forward to them becoming independent young ladies that are self sufficient and can take care on their own. I know I will miss them when they are gone, but that's ok. I have quite a list of things to see and do.

Goal of no new reactors in jeopardy
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appears willing to approve the construction of more nuclear reactors, abandoning the goal set by his predecessor to end the nation's reliance on atomic power by the 2030s.

"The new reactors will be totally different from those at Tepco's Fukushima No. 1 plant that caused the crisis," Abe said on a TV program Sunday. "We will be building them with consent obtained from the Japanese people."

Plans to Transport Uranium for Safe Disposal Proceed

The project, started in the 1980s, stores radioactive material in canisters. These canisters act as a shield for radiation, reducing level by about half.

The containers are then buried more than 40 feet under the ground, a depth that protects uranium from usage and people from harmful radiation.

Davis-Besse’s extension
[link to www.toledoblade.com]

[snip]

FirstEnergy Corp. is moving closer to getting federal approval of an extension through 2037 of its operating license for the Davis-Besse nuclear plant in Ottawa County. But formal action likely won’t occur before fall, 2014 — which gives regulators ample time to ensure that the plant is running smoothly.

Four activist groups, citing exterior cracks found in Davis-Besse’s containment shield building in 2011, questioned FirstEnergy’s assessment of its ability to handle a severe plant accident. The licensing board ruled, largely on narrow technical grounds, that the issues the challengers raised were speculative or irrelevant.

More residents refuse nuclear benefits after Fukushima disaster

The number of households declining benefits for living near nuclear plants has nearly doubled since the Fukushima disaster, reflecting growing opposition to a system long criticized as paying off citizens to promote nuclear power.

In fiscal 2011, 14 prefectures paid 7.6 billion yen ($87 million) in benefits to 1.03 million households, according to figures obtained by The Asahi Shimbun through interviews and freedom-of-information requests.

In that year, 171 households declined the benefits, an increase of 80 percent from 94 the previous year. The number ranged between 80 and 100 in preceding years.
---
The system was introduced in fiscal 1981 to seek understanding and cooperation for nuclear power. It is said to derive from Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka’s suggestion in 1973 that electricity charges should be lowered in areas around nuclear power plants.

In a Diet session in 1982, a lawmaker said the benefits are nothing but favors doled out to residents and could jeopardize discussions on the safety of nuclear power plants.

A senior official at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy told the Diet session that the government cannot promote construction of nuclear power plants unless residents receive some gains.

Japan’s plan for a nuclear-free society, which gathered momentum after the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima nearly two years ago, looks set to be shortlived.

Since its electoral landslide in December, the Liberal Democratic party has wasted no time in setting the stage for a return to Japan’s former policy of promoting nuclear power as a major source of energy generation.

But “since the Abe administration was formed, their rhetoric on nuclear power has changed quite rapidly”, says Koichi Nakano, professor of political science at Sophia University in Tokyo.

“It now looks like the LDP feels it is their duty to promote nuclear energy,” Mr Nakano says.

A key test of the government’s determination to revive nuclear energy use will come this spring when the NRA is scheduled to announce its verdict on whether or not the Oi nuclear power plant in northwestern Japan is sitting on an active faultline.

The Oi power plant houses the only two reactors currently operating in Japan.

While the NRA has said it will recommend that Oi be shut down if it determines that it is on an active faultline, the final decision will be a political one.

NRA: Reactor screening to begin in July or later

The head of Japan's nuclear watchdog says the screening of offline reactors cannot start until a new set of safety standards comes out in July. Only 2 of the nation's 50 reactors are currently online following the 2011 accident at Fukushima Daiichi.

Nuclear Regulation Authority chair Shunichi Tanaka spoke in an exclusive interview with NHK.

He stressed the authority cannot begin the process of examination on restarting the reactors unless new safety rules are made into law.

TEPCO prepares to remove spent fuel rods

Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to start removing spent fuel rods from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant this year. It will be the first major step in a decommissioning process that is expected to take 40 years.

The first step in that process involves the removal of 1,533 spent fuel rods stored in the pool in the reactor 4 building. There is more used fuel there than in any other reactor building at the plant.

It will be a delicate operation, made even more sensitive by the fact that the hydrogen explosion raised concerns about the earthquake resistance of the structure.
