Hey Bug, I'm going way, way, way, off topic here ~ but I need some parenting advice. I came home from work tonight and smelled weed in my house. I realize this is not unusual in Oregon, or for teens, but damn! Advice on how to proceed? I'm not saying you are old, just more experienced than I am. If any others have good info, let me know. The Savannah River Site’s salt-waste processing plant originally was scheduled for completion in 2009, but problems with its design and the types of materials needed in the facility have delayed work and sent costs skyrocketing.

Early U.S. Department of Energy estimates placed the project’s cost at $440 million. The cost later was revised to $900 million, agency records show. Today, it has risen to $1.3 billion, according to a November status report by the Energy Department.

That’s an important pocketbook issue for taxpayers.

Haha... yeah... I'm old. I might not be the best one to give advice on pot, 'tho..
I've been known to take a puff now and then for my aches and pains....

As far as the kids go... I'd rather them be honest about what they are doing..
Rather them be toking a little than drinking and getting crazy..
Drinking kills a lot of kids.. before they figure it out.
Sometimes you don't get a second chance.

Depends on the individual, too. Some people shouldn't use any kind of stimulant..
You know your kids better than anybody.
I've seen a great deal more misery caused by the abuse of alcohol than anything else..
Hard drugs.. a distant second.
Pot..? Give me a cookie..
They could hardly argue if you don't want it in your house..

As with anything in life... moderation.

That's pretty good advice. I smoked pretty regular from 17 to 21 years old, but then grew out of it. I'm 45 now and have a different view as a parent. Our youngest has struggled with severe anxiety and does not approve of psych drugs. She was on them for a bit but came to us with way too much info to ignore. I agree with pot as a medicinal property, but I do disagree with being sneaky, and stinking up my house. I agree pot is better than booze, and is not necessarily a gateway drug to the harder stuff. I'm hoping everything turns out ok, I'd hate to see this turn into much more than it should be.

The best way to get a kid to do something.. is to forbid it.

That was my thought as well. I just told them "this will never be done in the house again". I will leave it up to them to determine if that included the patio and backyard. I'm not against it completely, I just don't want 30 year old stoners still living at home. I am looking forward to them becoming independent young ladies that are self sufficient and can take care on their own. I know I will miss them when they are gone, but that's ok. I have quite a list of things to see and do.

Put a smoking lamp and an ashtray on the picnic table..

More residents refuse nuclear benefits after Fukushima disaster

The number of households declining benefits for living near nuclear plants has nearly doubled since the Fukushima disaster, reflecting growing opposition to a system long criticized as paying off citizens to promote nuclear power.

In fiscal 2011, 14 prefectures paid 7.6 billion yen ($87 million) in benefits to 1.03 million households, according to figures obtained by The Asahi Shimbun through interviews and freedom-of-information requests.

In that year, 171 households declined the benefits, an increase of 80 percent from 94 the previous year. The number ranged between 80 and 100 in preceding years.

The system was introduced in fiscal 1981 to seek understanding and cooperation for nuclear power. It is said to derive from Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka’s suggestion in 1973 that electricity charges should be lowered in areas around nuclear power plants.

In a Diet session in 1982, a lawmaker said the benefits are nothing but favors doled out to residents and could jeopardize discussions on the safety of nuclear power plants.

A senior official at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy told the Diet session that the government cannot promote construction of nuclear power plants unless residents receive some gains.

A key test of the government’s determination to revive nuclear energy use will come this spring when the NRA is scheduled to announce its verdict on whether or not the Oi nuclear power plant in northwestern Japan is sitting on an active faultline.

The Oi power plant houses the only two reactors currently operating in Japan.

While the NRA has said it will recommend that Oi be shut down if it determines that it is on an active faultline, the final decision will be a political one.

NRA: Reactor screening to begin in July or later

The head of Japan's nuclear watchdog says the screening of offline reactors cannot start until a new set of safety standards comes out in July. Only 2 of the nation's 50 reactors are currently online following the 2011 accident at Fukushima Daiichi.

Nuclear Regulation Authority chair Shunichi Tanaka spoke in an exclusive interview with NHK.

He stressed the authority cannot begin the process of examination on restarting the reactors unless new safety rules are made into law.

TEPCO prepares to remove spent fuel rods

Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to start removing spent fuel rods from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant this year. It will be the first major step in a decommissioning process that is expected to take 40 years.

The first step in that process involves the removal of 1,533 spent fuel rods stored in the pool in the reactor 4 building. There is more used fuel there than in any other reactor building at the plant.

It will be a delicate operation, made even more sensitive by the fact that the hydrogen explosion raised concerns about the earthquake resistance of the structure.
