Two years after disaster, anti-nuke rallies in Tokyo still draw huge crowds
Galvanized on the eve of the second anniversary of an earthquake and tsunami that triggered the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years, protesters turned out in full force in the Japanese capital on March 9 and 10, calling on the government to shun nuclear power.

On March 10, an estimated 40,000 protesters demonstrated around Tokyo, including in front of the Prime Minister's Official Residence, ministry offices and Hibiya Park.

"It's becoming more and more important for us to protest. I do this for my children, we can't leave the mess of nuclear power behind to them," said a 32-year-old mother of two marching in front of the offices of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, chanting "Stop nuclear! Protect our children!"

"People and the media are starting to forget Fukushima and what happened there," said the woman.

Japan is still coming to terms with the disaster that ravaged its northeastern region on March 11, 2011--the earthquake and tsunami killed more than 15,000 people. Several thousand people are still unaccounted for. The disaster triggered a meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, which forced 160,000 people from their homes, and many of them will never return. It also sparked an unprecedented protest movement against nuclear power.

Protesters throng Tokyo parks on national holidays and outside the Diet building every Friday evening, drawing people previously unseen at political rallies, such as salarymen and housewives.

Experts cast doubt on reactor cooling strategy

NHK has found there is a possibility that more than half of the water injected into a reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant failed to reach its destination.

In the severe accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, 3 reactors melted down, releasing a huge amount of radioactive materials.

NHK staff and experts studied the emergency water injection by fire engines soon after the disaster at the power plant on March 11, 2011.

They used a map of the pipe layout for the No. 3 reactor to check for possible leaks.

They found that some of the water is likely to have entered a condenser instead of the reactor due to a malfunctioning pump.

An experiment proved that the pump did not work when the plant's electric power was knocked out.

The experts say about 55 percent of the injected water was wasted.

They say that a meltdown could have been averted if 75 percent of the water had reached the reactor.

Less than 1% of food exceeds new cesium limits

Less than one percent of food in Japan has been found to contain radioactive cesium above the legal limit.

In April last year, the government tightened permissible levels of cesium in food products from the provisional limits put in place following the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The current standard for staples such as vegetables, rice and fish is 100 becquerels of cesium per kilogram. The limit for baby food and milk is 50 becquerels, while that for drinking water is 10 becquerels.

Residents file suits over Fukushima accident

People affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident have filed new lawsuits against the government and the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, on the second anniversary of the disaster.

The actions brought by more than 1,600 people on Monday to district courts in the prefectures of Fukushima, Chiba and Tokyo, demand compensation for their suffering and losses. Many of the plaintiffs are from Fukushima, but they also include residents of neighboring prefectures. A number of them are evacuees who had to leave their homes to escape radioactive contamination caused by the accident.

At the Fukushima court, plaintiffs are demanding restitution of the region where they lived to its condition before radioactive materials contaminated the area.
They are also asking for 50,000 yen, or about 520 dollars, a month each in damages payments.

Belgians rally for nuclear-free energy

Protestors rallied in southern Belgium on Sunday outside the Tihange nuclear power plant, where inspectors have found cracks in a nuclear reactor.

Protesters called for the immediate closing of all nuclear reactors. Belgian inspectors found faults last summer in 2 of its 7 nuclear reactors. Operations are being suspended until their safety is confirmed.

The protestors' rally came one day before the March 11th second anniversary of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Lies, lies and more lies...

U.S. nuclear chief says plants safer after Japan crisis

WASHINGTON —
Two years after the nuclear crisis in Japan, the top U.S. regulator says American nuclear power plants are safer than ever, though not trouble-free. A watchdog group calls that assessment overly rosy.

“The performance is quite good,” Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Allison Macfarlane said in an interview with The Associated Press.

All but five of the 104 U.S. nuclear reactors were performing at acceptable safety levels at the end of 2012, Macfarlane said, citing a recent NRC report. “You can’t engage that many reactors and not have a few that are going to have difficulty,” she said.

But the watchdog group, the Union of Concerned Scientists, has issued a scathing report saying nearly one in six U.S. nuclear reactors experienced safety breaches last year, due in part to weak oversight. The group accused the NRC of “tolerating the intolerable.”

Using the agency’s own data, the scientists group said 14 serious incidents, ranging from broken or impaired safety equipment to a cooling water leak, were reported last year. Over the past three years, 40 of the 104 U.S. reactors experienced one or more serious safety-related incidents that required additional action by the NRC, the report said.

TEPCO vows to stand by Fukushima people 2 yrs after nuclear accident

Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Monday called on its employees to think of ways to stand by the people of Fukushima Prefecture to fulfill the company's responsibility for a nuclear disaster that followed an earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan two years ago.

In a speech delivered at the company's Fukushima headquarters, TEPCO President Naomi Hirose said, "I want as many people as possible to visit here, look at the actual situation and listen to the people affected by the disaster and think hard on what we can do, such as compensation payments and decontamination."

More than 150,000 people from Fukushima still live as evacuees in and outside the prefecture, due largely to widespread contamination by radioactive substances released from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi atomic power plant. TEPCO expects it will take around 40 years to finish scrapping the four stricken units at the complex.

Fukushima government deleted radiation data gathered shortly after nuclear disaster
[link to japandailypress.com]

[snip]

The disaster task force said that they had to write over the contents because the manufacturer said that it was not possible to remove the data from the device. “We overwrote the readings because we needed to use the dosimeter to monitor radiation levels in various parts of the prefecture,” said an official.

The manufacturer vehemently denies the statement, saying that the data was transferable to a computer by the use of a particular program. “Readings are saved in the dosimeter’s memory chip and can be extracted using a special program installed on a computer,” according to a representative of the manufacturer. Meanwhile, the prefectural government admitted to not having reported the matter to the national government and apologized. Because of the mistake, however, it made it impossible to know how much radiation exposure the people living near the nuclear plant met.

The agency analyzed radiation readings taken 1 meter aboveground, using data collected by the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry. According to the estimates, radiation levels fell 30 percent from April 2011 to November 2011, and had dropped to half by November 2012.

The agency believes most of the drop is due to the elements, not government decontamination efforts. Where the tainted rainwater ends up, however, is another matter.

In November, the fall slowed after the radiation from cesium-134, which has a half-life of two years, fell to half, the agency said. But the energy from the more prevalent cesium-137, whose half-life is 30 years, hasn’t changed.

In Japan, two years after Fukushima nuclear accident, work resumes on new plant
[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

[snip]

In the aftermath of March 2011 meltdowns in Fukushima that contaminated 700 square miles with radiation and forced 150,000 to flee their homes, most never to return, Japan’s utility companies paused nearly all nuclear-related projects. The accident sparked a global debate about nuclear power, but it was especially fierce in Japan, where all 50 operable reactors were taken offline and work was halted on three new plants where building had been underway.

But two of the existing reactors are back in action, and the resumption of construction at the Oma Nuclear Power Plant here — a project that broke ground in 2008 and was halted by the operator, J-Power, after the accident — marks the clearest sign yet that the stalemate is breaking.

The green light for the new plan was, at its root, a bet by the energy company that Japan will come to again support and rely on nuclear power, which provided some one-third of Japan’s electricity before the Fukushima crisis.

Analysts say that predicting the direction of Japan’s atomic future is difficult and that J-Power’s decision is a risky one — even with a pro-nuclear party back in power — because a majority here opposes long-term nuclear dependence.

It would be reassuring to think that the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl is contained, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is in stable shut-down.

Unfortunately a look inside the Fukushima plant suggests otherwise.

I was part of a group taken in to the Fukushima plant last week, only the second time foreign TV journalists have been allowed in since the disaster two year ago. Very little that we saw in our brief two-hour tour was reassuring.

Nuclear Industry Withers in U.S. as Wind Pummels Prices

A glut of government-subsidized wind power may help accomplish a goal some environmentalists have sought for decades: kill off U.S. nuclear power plants while reducing reliance on electricity from burning coal.

That’s the assessment of executives and utility experts after the U.S. wind-energy industry went on a $25 billion growth binge in 2012, racing to qualify for a federal tax credit that was set to expire at year’s end.
The surge added a record 13,124 megawatts of wind turbines to the nation’s power grid, up 28 percent from 2011. The new wind farms increased financial pressure on traditional generators such as Dominion Resources (D) Inc. and Exelon Corp. (EXC) in their operating regions. That’s because wind energy undercut power prices already driven to 10-year-lows by an abundance of natural gas.
“Right now, natural gas and wind power are more economic than nuclear power in the Midwestern electricity market,” Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center, a Chicago-based advocate of cleaner energy, said in a phone interview. “It’s a matter of economic competitiveness.”
