Swiss supreme court stays closure of nuclear plant

The Swiss supreme court on Thursday ruled that the country's Muehleberg nuclear power plant can continue operating beyond the end of June, overturning a cut-off date for decommissioning.

The Federal Tribunal voided a 2012 decision by Switzerland's administrative court, which had said Muehleberg's operating authorisation should end on June 28 owing to technical deficiencies.

Westinghouse Springfields Completes First French Fuel Delivery

Westinghouse Electric Company's nuclear fuel manufacturing plant at Springfields, near Preston, has dispatched its first consignment of Light Water Reactor (LWR) fuel assemblies to France.

The first fuel assemblies were dispatched to Electricite de France's (EDF) Gravelines 5 power station in Northern France. The delivery is the culmination of a rigorous extensive product qualification exercise to ensure the manufacturing plant at Springfields meets EDF's exacting quality and production standards. This process included all aspects of the fuel manufacturing route.

1 dead, 3 injured in Arkansas nuclear site accident

A worker was killed and three others were injured Sunday during an industrial accident at a US nuclear power plant that did not release any nuclear material, officials and operators said.

Part of a generator fell as it was being moved out of the turbine building at Entergy Operations Inc's Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville, the company said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened by what has happened today," said executive vice president and chief nuclear officer Jeff Forbes.

"Our greatest sympathy is with the family and friends of the employee who lost his life, and with those who sustained injuries. I also want to express my sorrow and support to all those who work at Arkansas Nuclear One. I know this is especially hard on them."

---

UPDATE (5:00 p.m.) — An Entergy spokesperson told The Courier the total number of Arkansas Nuclear One employees injured in the Sunday morning accident at the plant was eight, not three, as earlier reported.

The spokesperson provided no other details about those injured, including their names or medical status.

TEPCO admits it deserves blame for Fukushima nuclear meltdown
[link to japandailypress.com]

[snip]

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has come out and publicly said on Friday that it deserves a majority of the blame for the Fukushima nuclear disaster, a very strong statement about the company’s shortcomings in the crisis if compared to the conclusions it made in its earlier investigation reports. The company was willing acknowledge that the it was ill prepared to deal with March 2011’s massive earthquake and the resulting tsunami, and that its crisis management processes were inadequate to deal with the resulting situations.

Recently though, the company’s reluctance to claim responsibility triggered public outcry and an internal reform task force was launched, led by Hirose. A five-member committee of outside experts including former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission chief Dale Klein oversaw the task force, which was formed to re-investigate the crisis. This recent statement was a result of the task force’s re-investigation into the role that TEPCO played in what became the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Fukushima meltdown appears to have sickened American infants
[link to grist.org]

[snip]

Children born in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington between one week and 16 weeks after the meltdowns began in March 2011 were 28 percent more likely to suffer from congenital hypothyroidism than were kids born in those states during the same period one year earlier, a new study shows. In the rest of the U.S. during that period in 2011, where radioactive fallout was less severe, the risks actually decreased slightly compared with the year before.

Substantial quantities of the radioisotope iodine-131 were produced by the meltdowns, then wafted over the Pacific Ocean and fell over Hawaii, the American West Coast, and other Pacific countries in rain and snow, reaching levels hundreds of times greater than those considered safe.

Pretty serious anytime there is a loss of off-site power.
The reactor scrammed at full power..
Unit one on backup generators only.
Unit two on both off-site and generators...
which tells me the damage to the electrical systems is substantial.

[link to www.platts.com]
[snip]
Young said Entergy's onsite personnel, and other employees brought to the site, have been conducting walk downs "trying to understand the scope of the damage." He said "one of the areas under investigation" is why Unit 1's turbine lift device failed during the movement of its main turbine generator stator, which the company said weighs about 500 tons.

"A crane was erected to move this generator stator out of the turbine building ... to an open area" in order to remove the existing stator at Unit 1 and replace it with a new stator, he said.

The stator is the stationary part of the electrical generator. The rotor is the portion that moves.

The falling stator damaged water lines and electrical equipment, which caused 1,065-MW Unit 2 at the site, which had been operating at full power, to shut automatically, Dricks said.

Unit-2 suffered damage to its switchgear, Entergy told the NRC. "At this time, the full extent of structural damage on Unit 1 is not known," Entergy said.

Damage to a breaker caused a loss of all offsite power for Unit 1, Entergy said in the NRC report. Emergency diesel generators at the site are supplying power to Unit 1. Power to Unit 2 is being supplied by diesel generators and offsite power, Entergy said in the statement.
