Westinghouse CEO makes global push as market shifts

Danny Roderick spent four days last week in the Czech Republic to nudge his company, Westinghouse Electric Co., closer to winning a potential $10 billion contract to build two nuclear reactors there.

The outcome is important to the Cranberry-based company's growth in the nuclear power business and employment levels. Such long-term mega projects don't come around often and account for 20 percent of Westinghouse revenue.

“We're working very hard in international markets to bring in one of those orders,” Roderick said in a recent interview. “It's still going to be a few years before anything new breaks in the United States.”

IAEA sends experts to damaged Fukushima plant

A team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency is on its way to Japan to review the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Team leader Juan Carlos Lentijo left Vienna, Austria, for Tokyo on Saturday. Lentijo is director of the Agency's division of nuclear fuel cycle and waste technology.

He will be joined by 12 experts, including several specialized in reactor decommissioning.

They are scheduled to visit the Fukushima plant from Wednesday through Friday. The team will assess decommissioning work at reactors 1, 2 and 3, which suffered core meltdowns.

Japan to form nuclear agreements with Turkey, UAE

The Japanese government has decided to form nuclear power agreements with Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to enable exports of Japan's nuclear power technologies, a government source said Saturday.

The government apparently aims to demonstrate its policy of promoting international nuclear power business as boosting exports of infrastructure is a key pillar of the government's growth strategies.

S. Korea divides nuclear plant controls from Internet: Yonhap

The state-run operator of South Korea's nuclear power plants has separated its internal computer network from the Internet in an effort to guard against possible North Korean cyber attacks, Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday.

It said Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. has also completely divided its nuclear plant control systems from its internal computer networks and restricted both systems' access to the Internet, while USB ports of the plant control systems have also been sealed.

The network separation is the safest way of protecting the nuclear power plants from hacking attacks from the outside, the company explained, according to Yonhap.

Transfer of radioactive water to be delayed at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday it has postponed the transfer of radioactive water from a leaking underground tank at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant because it needs more time to conduct safety checks and install a water pipe.

The operator of the crisis-hit plant in northeastern Japan had planned to start moving contaminated water from the No. 2 tank to an above-ground container located about 400 meters away.

However, the utility known as TEPCO discovered Thursday that about 22 liters of contaminated water had leaked from a junction of the piping for transferring liquid from the No. 3 tank to the No. 6 tank.

Nuclear batteries offer energy savings for mines

An Ontario-based nuclear energy company claims that only nuclear power can completely replace diesel and other fossil fuels to power northern mining projects.

The final day of the mining symposium included short presentations energy and infrastructure for mines, and Lang was the only delegate who claimed to have an alternative energy source that could completely supply the energy needs of a large-scale mining operation in northern Canada.

Dunedin Energy System’s “nuclear battery” technology, “small modular adaptable reactor technology,” known by the acronym SMART, is now in a “vendor design review” stage, Lang said.

The company will produce its first operational demonstration unit in about five years. Dunedin’s system uses a replaceable nuclear-reactor module, known as a nuclear battery, which is replaced every 20 years. It eliminates the need for constant re-supply of diesel fuel, Lang said, thus offering major savings on rising transportation costs, and does not pollute.

The replaceable “nuclear battery” is about the size of a large bus, capable of producing up to 25 megawatts of energy — enough to power a mine like the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake. Once depleted, the battery would be removed and sent back south for recycling, to be replaced by a new module.

Nuclear plant seeks to reassure media

‘NO PROBLEM’:Taipower told reporters visiting its power plant that the facility had protective measures that ensured nothing like the Fukushima disaster could happen

With the search to find a permanent storage site for nuclear waste stalled due to strong opposition, Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) officials yesterday said that waste produced by the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant in Gongliao (??), New Taipei City (???), could be stored at the plant for up to 60 years, but said the company has no idea what to do with the radioactive waste after that time.

Lawsuit seeks evacuation of Fukushima children

THEIR demand: The right to live free of radiation. The plaintiffs who started the legal battle: 14 children.

A Japanese appeals court is expected to rule soon on this unusual lawsuit, filed on behalf of the children by their parents and anti-nuclear activists in June 2011 in a district court in Fukushima city, about 60 kilometres west of the crippled nuclear plant that spewed radiation when a massive earthquake and tsunami hit it more than two years ago.

The lawsuit argues that Koriyama, a city of 330,000, should evacuate its children to an area where radiation levels are no higher than natural background levels in the rest of Japan, or about 1 millisievert annual exposure.

It is the first IAEA mission to Japan focusing on decommissioning. The 12-member team will also look into the recent radioactive water leaks and electricity supply disruptions at the plant -- mishaps occurring more than two years after the devastating nuclear accident.

San Onofre to the Public: DROP DEAD!

The bitter battle over two stricken southern California reactors has taken a shocking seismic hit.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ignored critical questions from two powerful members of Congress just as the Government Accountability Office has cast serious doubt on the emergency planning at the San Onofre nuclear plant.

At a cost of some $770 million, Southern California Edison and its partners installed faulty steam generators at San Onofre Units 2 and 3 that have failed and leaked.

Those reactors have been shut since January 2012 (similar defects doomed Unit 1 in 1992).

Plutonium found outside of containment in marine soil at Fukushima Daiichi

TEPCO has been forced to take drastic measures to deal with the continual contamination of the Pacific Ocean from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.  To quell the transfer of contaminated marine soil, the utility worked to cover the ocean floor in the port with concrete.  They later discovered that the fish life in the port was highly radioactive, which forced them to seal the entrance of the port to prevent as much fish from escaping as possible.

This week, TEPCO announced that it had detected Plutonium 238, Plutonium 239, and Plutonium 240 in the marine soil in the port at Fukushima Daiichi near the Unit 1 water intake canal.

".... Phytoplankton is easily corrupted. Although it's involved with providing well over half the earth's oxygen through the process of photosynthesis, excessive UV rays coming through ozone layer openings do damage them.
So now we have a 2011 report from researchers at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology which stated that Fukushima's radioactive cessium 137 has contaminated ocean plankton. Plankton is the first food within the marine life food chain.
Professor Takashi Ishimaru, said the plankton were heavily contaminated because sea currents continuously carried contaminated water southward from the nuclear plant. There you have it. Radioactively contaminated plankton.
If it doesn't produce a form of domoic acid from that damage, it goes up the food chain to larger fish and sea mammals. Remember that quote from earlier in this article: "Marine mammals are sentinels of the eco system."..."
