“Out of Japan’s 50 nuclear reactors, I think Hamaoka is one of the least likely to stay open in the post-Fukushima context,” said Hajime Amano, a member of the local regional assembly where the plant is located.

Tepco should be watched carefully with extra vigilance.. considering their deceptive and immoral past behavior;
if they are allowed to restart any reactors at all.

But, I suppose they should be allowed to generate income, if for no other reasons than compensating victims.. and to finance cleaning up the royal fucking mess they have made of it.

Regulator urges reduction of tritium into sea

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has urged Tokyo Electric Power Company to address a steep rise in levels of radioactive tritium in waters near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The authority says contaminated water is likely to be leaking from the site.

TEPCO had reported that water collected last Friday from a port near the plant contained 1,100 becquerels of tritium per liter. That's 10 times higher than the level logged during the year that ended in April.

TEPCO earlier found that levels of radioactive tritium and strontium were rising between late May and June in a well near the No. 2 reactor building.

Fukushima: Wrong radiation exposures given

Fukushima Prefecture says more than 16,000 residents were given wrong estimates of their external radiation exposure in a survey following the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011.

The figures were calculated by the National Institute of Radiological Sciences near Tokyo for all of Fukushima Prefecture's 2 million residents. The figures were calculated using a computer program, based on factors including the residents' activities in the 4 months after the accident.

Of the 2 million residents, calculations using the program have been completed for 420,000 people.

Fukushima Health Management Survey Team announced that 12 children under 18 years old developed thyroid cancer and 15 children with suspected to develop it. (So far 174,000 out of 360,000 children were examined.)

[snip]
We should not conclude on the result of thyroid examination as nothing to do with Fukushima fallout. Normally 1 to 2 in 1 million children develop thyroid cancer. However in Chernobyl, 4 children developed thyroid cancer in the following year. Also we should be well aware that cancer spread into lung in one in six cases in Chernobyl. Nuclear disaster is a national crisis. We haven’t learned a lesson from the Chernobyl disaster and been neglecting the danger of Nuclear energy. The Japanese Government should support the Fukushima disaster victims financially by giving them more regular and full examination and evacuating them into safer area.

L.A. California Air Radiation Surges 419% Apr 13, 2013
Dust aggregate over 27 days as collected from two HEPA filter machines and a new ionizer at Radiation Station Santa Monica, California. Aggregate measures 90.4% above background. Previous period of 58 days from just the two HEPA filter machines yielded dust aggregate that was 46.3% higher than background. On a per day comparison, the current period's dust is 419% than the previous reading, a significant jump. This comes as EnviroReporter explores U.S. EPA's nuking of emergency radiation limits, a move so radical that the limits include raising the amount for Iodine-131 by 27,000 times.

The Mainichi has uncovered secret government documents that prove the US and deputy DOE secretary Danial Poneman put intense pressure on Japan to continue the plutonium fuel MOX program in Japan. The documents clearly show the US is pressuring Japan to continue with the MOX fuel cycle program, something the US has failed to do themselves. The US has claimed the concern to be that the plutonium would be diverted to military use. Japan has a massive amount of spent nuclear fuel, more than they could ever realistically use through reprocessing into MOX. The US stance also ignores the prospect of vitrification, a technology that encases the material in a glass substance rendering it unusable for weapons.

The US is still struggling to create an operating vitrification plant at the Hanford nuclear site but France has two functioning vitrification plants.

The nuclear program in the US needs help.
Cost overruns, delays, indecision, poor planning.. lotsa crap.
The MOX program has political promises tied up with it.
Lotsa money invested.. too big too fail type of thing.
Easier to enforce it in Japan to show good faith.

They have painted themselves into another corner.
When will they ever learn..?

Fukushima survey wrongly estimates radiation exposure of 16,000 people

FUKUSHIMA, Japan, June 26, Kyodo

Fukushima Prefecture and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences said Tuesday they erroneously estimated the radiation exposure of 16,118 people in a survey covering the first four months following the March 2011 nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Among about 420,000 people the authorities have finished compiling data on so far, recalculations show 12,469 received higher doses and 3,649 lower doses than previously estimated.

The margins for revisions range from plus 0.4 millisievert to minus 0.2 millisievert. As a result of revisions, some were found to be exposed to more than 1 millisievert, which is the annual limit set by the government for ordinary citizens.

Rofl and you are a Freelancetroll who disturb the exchange of Information!

Here, a open Letter from one of the leading Newspaper here in Nippon:

Open letter to top executives of electric utilities with nuclear power plants:

Once again at general shareholders’ meetings this year, you blatantly ignored calls for weaning your companies from reliance on nuclear power generation. Instead, you made clear your determination to get your idled nuclear reactors back online as soon as possible.

Eight of the nine electric power companies that operate nuclear plants reported losses for the last fiscal year, which ended in March. The main factors behind the dismal standing include increased fuel costs due to the expansion of thermal power operations to compensate for the loss of electricity production with atomic energy.

Seven of them even had to dip into their cash reserves, or retained past profits, to cover their losses. Three of them have run out of these reserves. This is a really serious situation.

You seem to be wishing to bring things back to the way things were before by taking advantage of the Abe administration’s policy of promoting nuclear power generation.

It would seem, for the moment at least, that you are putting priority on short-term profits ahead of the future of your companies.
