Press Release for July 4th, 2013 LA Times Ad thanking former Japan Prime Minister Naoto Kan, Dr. Gregory Jaczko, Arnie Gundersen and Peter Bradford for their participation in 6/4 "Fukushima: Ongoing lessons for California".

Californians Publicly Thank Japan’s Former Prime Minister Kan, and Others

Dated: Jul. 04, 2013

A coalition of concerned citizens in Southern California publicly thanked former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan for sharing his experiences during the March 2011 Fukushima earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear disaster.

The full page Los Angeles Times ad today reads “The Noblest Motive is the Public Good”, motto of the San Diego County seal, where on June 4th a public conference entitled “Fukushima: Ongoing Lessons for California” was held at the San Diego County Administrative Center with key leaders to share with local government officials and concerned citizens their firsthand experience of an unfolding nuclear disaster. Three days later on June 7th San Onofre’s owner-operator, Southern California Edison, announced the nuclear power plant’s permanent closure.

Conference organizer, Torgen Johnson, said, “The hallmark of Independence Day is saluting patriots who are not afraid to stand up for the safety of American people!”

Prime Minister Kan was joined at the conference by former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chair, Dr. Gregory Jaczko, who led the Commission during the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, and who after more than seven years of public service was forced to step down (www,jaczkolegalfund.com). Also on the panel were globally respected nuclear industry executive, Arnie Gundersen, and former Commissioner of the U.S. NRC, Peter Bradford, both of whom were active during the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident.

Happy 4th of July! LA Times Ad thanking Naoto Kan & Others-7/4/13
by Cathy Iwane (Notes) on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at 5:34pm
THE NOBLEST
MOTIVE IS THE
PUBLIC GOOD. ( San Diego County Seal Motto )

Communities, elected officials, citizen groups, and
individuals across California extend a heartfelt THANK YOU
to Mr. Naoto Kan, former Prime Minister of Japan,
Dr. Gregory Jaczko, former Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission, Arnie Gundersen, nuclear industry
executive, and Peter Bradford, former Commissioner on the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for their endless efforts
to discuss, inform, and protect the public’s health and safety.

On June 4, 2013 a conference entitled “Fukushima: Ongoing
Lessons for California” was held in the San Diego County
Administrative Center. Their independent voices shared
considerable wisdom and experience about the risks of
nuclear power, and the need for regulatory agency reform.
These individuals have our deepest gratitude for prioritizing
health and safety.

On June 7 San Onofre nuclear reactor units were shut down,
permanently.

Thousands of men, women, and children are still victims of
the ongoing Fukushima tragedy living in radioactive hot
zones, and there is growing awareness and support within
the U.S. public.

On this July 4th Independence Day, we thank these individuals
who served to protect millions of Californians.

Coalition of concerned citizens of Southern California

Nuclear authority allows 2 reactors to stay online

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has approved the safety of the only 2 nuclear reactors currently operating in the country.

NRA officials say the Number 3 and 4 reactors at the Ohi nuclear power plant will remain online until their next regular maintenance check in September.

NRA members at a meeting on Wednesday approved a report stating the Ohi plant on the Sea of Japan coast poses no immediate threat to safety.

“I expect the operator will continue improving the safety of the plant towards meeting the new standards,” said the nuclear authority’s head Shunichi Tanaka.

The body will also continue examining if there are any active tectonic faults underneath the plant.

The stricter new standards are part of a government effort to convince a sceptical populace that they are taking safety issues seriously in post-Fukushima Japan.

Leading figures in a vocal anti-atomic movement say the nuclear industry had too cozy a relationship with its regulators in the decades leading up to the tsunami-sparked disaster in March 2011.

The new watchdog has set stricter new standards that operators must show they can meet before they will be granted permission to re-start idle reactors. All but two of Japan’s 50—those at Oi—are offline.

Japan PM vows to speed up reconstruction as he kicks off election campaign in Fukushima

TOKYO — Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to speed up disaster reconstruction Thursday as he kicked off the campaign for parliamentary elections during a visit to Fukushima.

Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior partner, the New Komeito, are expected to gain a majority of the 242 seats in the less powerful upper house in the July 21 election. That would give them control of both houses of parliament, making it easier to pass legislation.

Komeito sticks to nuclear-free goal

Jiji Press
New Komeito remained committed Thursday to its goal of reducing the country’s reliance on nuclear power to zero, in a set of policy pledges for the upcoming House of Councillors election.

In its newly announced policy goals, the party said it will not allow new nuclear power plant construction and will aim to achieve zero nuclear energy as soon as possible.

The attitude on nuclear energy is in line with Komeito’s campaign pledge for December’s election for the House of Representatives.

The new policy goals, announced by Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi at a press conference, will be included in the party’s campaign platform for the upper house election expected to be held on July 21.

The announcement brought into focus the difference of positions on energy policy between Komeito and its coalition partner, the Liberal Democratic Party.

TEPCO; are guaranteed,
to make for you and and them and me,
a place we go that is so often,
safe enough but smells real rotten.

Homeless people, there about,
to sign their contract,
sure and sound,
it says you can make some money,
no insurance for you; nor you mommy.

Move a rock from here to there,
fear nothing if you lose your hair,
dosimeter? you can see;
not one for you, not one for me.

The water out into the sea,
it's non apparently guaranteed,
we are transparent, and profound,
for pumping shit,
underground.

I'm not sure why your worried,
we fill your bank with crappy money,
we could have left you on the street,
just sign the contract;
all is neat.....

and when your body hits the ground,
we'll say we never found you around,
the buses taking you on the street,
are sprayed real clean,
we leave them neat.

Not a thing that will be found,
in deep along our irradiated ground.

It won't be us,
it will be them,
to find the time to clean it up,
again.

Scientists detect highest cesium levels in a year in Fukushima
[link to ajw.asahi.com]

FUKUSHIMA--Radioactive cesium levels found in moss on a rooftop in downtown Fukushima exceeded 1.7 million becquerels, the highest levels detected in a year, researchers said.

Ryoji Enomoto, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, who led the team, said radioactive cesium levels were unusually high in the samples collected.

The city is located more than 50 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.
