Forty Good Years and One Bad Day
[link to fairewinds.org]

A. Gundersen
The other alternative is to prevent the radiation from going out. Well, the horse is already out of the barn on that. The radiation is pretty much thoroughly throughout not just the reactor containment but also the other buildings. But it’s still critical to seal all those penetrations that are leaking. You have to find the leaks and plug them. Now that’s exacerbated by the fact that this already a very high radiation zone. It’s not like you can send somebody in with a caulking gun to slap some caulking in these. The radiation levels are frequently near lethal and finding and stopping those leaks – there’s a priority to get the nuclear fuel out of those nuclear reactors. But it’s going to be extraordinarily difficult because of the high radiation levels. So the best solution for the amount of water that’s being built up – 400 tons a day – is to drop the water table and to prevent any further water from going in. Fairewinds has been approached by two American manufacturers with solutions to the problems at Daiichi and trying to get that technology implemented in the Daiichi cleanup. The Japanese have rejected both of these American manufacturers. And I’m sure there’s been others. But the fact of the matter is that the technology for the Zeolite trench is in use in America right now at the West Valley site and has a proven track record of being very, very effective. So we’re in a situation where an effective American technology is being prevented from being implemented in Japan by either the Japanese government or Tokyo Electric, and I really don’t know which.

Mitsubishi Heavy to fight nuclear plant negligence claim in California

LOS ANGELES — Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd will fight Southern California Edison’s allegations of gross negligence in the design and manufacture of steam tubes built for the San Onofre nuclear power plant, which has been permanently shut down due to excessive wear in the tubes.

Mitsubishi sent a reply to a contract dispute filing from Southern California Edison that said the company “grossly failed to appropriately model” conditions in the steam generators it designed and built, leading to the early retirement of the power plant.

Edison argues that Mitsubishi is liable for costs that could run into the millions or even billions of dollars.

In a statement, Mitsubishi called SCE’s contentions “factually incorrect, legally unsound and inappropriate.” The company said it will defend itself through a dispute resolution process.

Here's a juicy little admission..chuckle

Release of nuclear plant ‘effluents’ into lake described as part of normal cycle
[link to www.harborcountry-news.com]

The May 5 release of about 80 gallons of slightly radioactive water from the Palisades nuclear power plant into Lake Michigan was unusual because it wasn’t planned.

But the incident brought into focus what many Southwest Michigan residents likely didn’t realize: The region’s two nuclear power plants (Palisades and the Donald C. Cook Plant in Lake Township) routinely discharge radioactive material into the air and into Lake Michigan.

In the nuclear industry, it’s called effluents.

The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission allows such releases, as long as they are closely monitored and do not exceed federal radiation release standards set in place by the NRC.

“Plants need to discharge small amounts of radioactive materials to operate,” said Jack Geissner, branch chief for the regional NRC office.

John Cassidy is a senior health physicist for the NRC regional office in Lisle, Ill. His job is to perform radiation inspections at the regional plants and study plants’ dosimetry records. Dosimeters measure absorbed doses of radiation.

Radiological releases are an inevitable part of the nuclear power industry, he said.

Nuclear rip-off
[link to www.ocala.com]

The concept of demanding that the users of electrical energy must pay for the construction costs of the nuclear plants is totally unfair but has been in effect in Florida for several years through Florida Statute 366.93. It has cost the rate-payers billions of dollars with absolutely nothing to show for it — and in the case of Progress Energy Florida, this money has gone directly into the pockets of the stockholders.

India now hopeful of nuclear pact with Japan

India is hopeful a nuclear pact can be signed now that Japan's ruling coalition has won a comfortable majority in Sunday's Upper House elections.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior partner, New Komeito, jointly secured control of both parliamentary chambers by winning more than 63 seats.

Japan and India agreed in May to accelerate talks on a deal to allow Japan to export nuclear power technology.

'Mutant' vegetables wrongly attributed to Fukushima

TOKYO — “Attack of the mutant vegetables!! Are these our new tomato overlords?? Let’s all boycott the struggling Fukushima farmers for, oh, say 100 years or so.”

Actually, despite the attention they’re receiving and hits they’re no doubt generating online, the photo at left and others like it don’t seem to originate from Fukushima at all.

The scary veggie pics went viral on the Internet. This is the kind of story that keeps showing up again in different incarnations. It’s just too good a story — I mean, who doesn’t want to see freakish vegetables? People love freakish vegetable pics.

So, where and when were these photos taken? I tracked down this tomato to find out.

TEPCO shows media work to harden soil, halt leak

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has shown the media the work under way to prevent radiation-tainted groundwater from seeping into the sea.

17 reporters and cameramen were guided to the site on Monday evening. Workers, who must wear protective suits and masks, are doing most of the work after sunset to avoid heatstroke.

The reporters were allowed to watch the work only for about 30 minutes from inside a bus due to radiation at the site.

TEPCO officials say levels of radiation there are as high as 200 microsieverts an hour. At that level, 5 hours of exposure is equivalent to the amount allowable for an ordinary person in one year.

More steam seen coming for Fukushima No. 3 reactor building

TOKYO — Workers at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan have reported steam inside a battered reactor building for the second time in less than a week, the operator said Tuesday.

Steam was seen around the fifth floor of the building housing the No. 3 reactor shortly after 9 a.m., Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said, adding workers were continuing with the operation to inject cooling water into the reactor and a pool storing nuclear fuel.

TEPCO said monitoring equipment showed no significant changes, including in the levels of toxic substances the broken reactor is releasing.
