Is there *anywhere* these days for one to drop out of society ?
I'm a young, successful (by societal standards) attorney living in the city. Through bad luck or my own fault or I don't know what I've lost nearly everyone in my life. Father won't speak to me, my only sister is too busy to return my calls, lost my gf of seven years last year, and despite over a year of effort I can't meet anyone who fills these voids. Just acquaintences who don't give back what I put in.

Fuck it I'm ready to throw this heart on the floor. I want to drop out. I've got a fair amount of money. Should I get a boat? A remote plot of land? Suggestions would are much appreciated.

Oh and thanks GLP for being there for me through all this.

hermits still exist, saw a doc about them in the Russian mountain range Oeral. You can do that anywhere remote but have to know how to survive in the wild though :)

how much do you know about living in the mountains? need to read up on survival, man, if you want to drop out. But if that aint your bag, get your name legally changed, cut (or color) your hair, and move to a different city or country.

How bad do you want to drop out?

I'm thinking you dont want to be a mountain man

Haha, I've posted this same reply in response to numerous threads here on GLP. Bought a beamer s1000 after the GF and I broke up and have been riding the shit out of it : )

I still feel the need to get away though. Maybe I should get a simple cabin in the remote US. Farm and ride until I run out of gas money.

1. yes

2. I'll skip the attorney jokes for now. What a setup...

3. A large sailboat is good, but you'll need a couple of years' worth of practice before you'll be ready to take it anywhere exotic.

4. A rural plot of land is good, but virtually nowhere in the US is outside of the reach of the Gestapo. Think broader.

It'd never work. Mongolia is too far removed for most armchair GLPers. Rural Asia is for adventurers only.

Nice thought though, but we must all struggle to find our own path in life.

If I meet you on the trail, we'll toast to GLP together.

San Juan Islands & buy a little cabin cruiser (boat), many beautiful & private places to roam on the Puget sound. Eventually, the Cascadia fault subduction zone will slip, but the beauty of the islands will be great until that goes.

Res Ipsa....dude :) I did law for a while, taught law for quite a while in SoCal and then decided to move to NorCal and teach Reiki. Small towns up here are quite charming, generally, and the people are actually noticeably relaxed, kind and openhearted, to a great extent -- not everyone, of course. In any event, why not research communes, retreat centers, etc. as one possibility. Or, having resources as noted, small towns here and there in the U.S. I've seen some 3rd world countries, and, well.......... While you will not qualify as having disappeared from the radar, completely, it will be a first step in that direction. Good luck !!

BTW, and not to be "preachy" -- it is very helpful to begin detoxing from your "law life", literally and "vibrationally" (seriously) and to commence a sensible program of proper exercise, diet and meditation/energy work type activities. Literally, getting serious about upping your frequency and consciousness level is in no way some delusional, fantasy "behavior", it is a reality and a healthy and beneficial approach to your new living paradigm.

Here's my suggestion:

The Findhorn Foundation community is an experiment in conscious living, an education centre and an ecovillage. Based mainly at The Park, Findhorn and at Cluny Hill College in the nearby town of Forres, the community extends also to individuals, businesses and organisations within a 50-mile radius of The Park and to the islands of Iona and Erraid on the west coast of Scotland.

Theres places in Alaska you can only snowmachine to in winter or fly to in summer. Lots of little lots on lakes you can buy that are remote like this. If you have money have the building supplies flown in and fly in a contractor to build it or at least get it started for you.

But you would get real sick of that fast I think. First you should rent in some remote town that also draws misfits, male and female. There are lots of them. I wouldn't recommend the native towns. They don't need any more white guys who don't know the ropes. But a few towns on the road systems attract the people escaping their lower 48 life and they are mostly white people. Most of them are not wild eyed mental cases.

Just get a tent, fishing gear and basic camping supplies. Travel though Alaska till you see an interesting town occasionally stay at a lodge or hotel not just a tent. At the little cafes here and there yap with the locals about the possiblilities and get settled in before winter. Or just beeline to Talkeetna, it's a road system mountain climbing and outdoor activity town full of either misfits or wannabee misfits.

Wow, did everybody take their meds today? This thread is amazingly clear, helpful and insightful.

Good job everyone.

Oh and yeah, you can drop out where ever you are. Boats: suck. Living in the middle of nowhere: sucks. Living without Money: Sucks. Tried it all.

Find a different lifestyle in a laid back, different place. Like Amsterdam (normal people live there, 5000 bucks to get a start up business visa, boom. Or move to Melbourne, Australia. Very nice place, cool people. Easy visa.

Open a little cafe on Hardware Lane, or a little pub on Chapel Street or St. Kilda, hire some blokes to run it and kick back. Reconsider your position, buy yourself some time to think.

Seriously, boats SUCK. Save the money for plane tickets.

No, there is nowhere left. There used to be though. Places like Findhorn -and there are hundreds- are unlikely to accept you beyond 'paying guest' status - the money you spend might (but not very likely) be worth the education.

lots of free advice, nearly all of it is great!

But...

You have to begin by attracting (and bonding with) the right person/people in your vicinity.

You have money? No problem. Philippines has some 10,000 islands. Buy round trip ticket fly into Cebu catch a boat to any of the islands and squat. They can track you to the Phillipines but good luck finding you on whatever island you decide to squat on after that. Clear waters, good fishing, tropical weather, beautiful women, and living off the land is very easy as many fruits and edible flora and fauna are in abundance and law enforcement leaves you alone. Check the money conversion rate - can live like a king on very little...one of the last true paradises. If you find yourself needing cash or supplies, take a boat to one of the more developed islands such as Boracay and use an ATM to tap one of your multiple bank accounts then disappear once again to your island. Locals live mostly in poverty and are VERY loyal to anyone paying them and treating them well. Have someone build you a boat - no need to register it like you would in the US. VERY low stress. You could buy a SCUBA shop on the beach for a song and spend your days in crystal clear waters blowing bubbles! Seem a better option than living in the frigid Alaskan wilderness...nothing against Alaska but just sayin' :-) South America has tons of jungle where people still live tribal lives. How adventurous are you? You have a plane? If you have money many options exist for you that are closed to the rest of us. I hope you find what you are looking for bro! If you go, take me with you? :-)

Go volunteer to time and help the needy, ophan, etc.

Whatever your heart feels more inclined to.

Give and help, don't worry about receiving.

1000 acquaintance, doesn't compare to one true good friend, so keep searching.

Also, take an honest look at yourself, to see how you can be a better friend and person, this may help to make others more warm and friendly to you.

Also consider searching for God.

When you do find him, people's opinions will matter very little, since what God thinks of you will be much more important.

Good advice. A paradise awaits in Asia.
I've traveled all over Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Laos and Nepal. I would go back to any of these countries tomorrow (even on my own) enjoy the people, the weather, the lack of fear.... need we say more?
