Turkish and Syrian forces engaged in a tense cross-border standoff on Thursday as a fresh military operation against Syrian dissidents threatened to spark a major regional crisis.

Turkish and Syrian forces engaged in a tense cross-border standoff on Thursday as a fresh military operation against Syrian dissidents threatened to spark a major regional crisis.

The offensive brought Syrian and Turkish troops into eye-contact for the first time, significantly worsening the increasingly noxious relationship between the two neighbours.

More than 30 tanks were seen surging into Khirbet al-Joz and bursts of automatic gunfire could be heard from the Turkish side of the border.

An offensive was also under way in nearby Managh, where soldiers roared through the streets in military vehicles mounted with machine guns, opening fire indiscriminately at terrified civilians, according to accounts by villagers.
An immediate cross-border exchange was averted after Turkish troops withdrew a few hundred yards.

I wouldn't say it was the best moment. If Syria keep building up troops it will give Turkey more leeway in saying that they pose a danger. The more Syrian troops in the area the more of a problem there is for Turkey (or, more accurately, the more likely it will be seen as reason to start shit).

The major issue here is what happens if shit does kick off between Turkey and Syria. I'm not going to make any guesses in that regard.

it wont be turkey vs syria,
turkey is a nato member so it will be nato vs syria,
if they really crossed the turkeys border its already an attack on a nato member + the civil killings in syria itself makes it only a matter of time when shtf there, probaly needs a little bit more tension and pusing from the syrian side..
and rusland wont do nothing, because they cant do anything then play along, u also have to remember there is a big exersize with rusland in it, why is that? only for a media stunt? they dont need to do that, they are in the 'gang' themself untill they have better options..
iam more worried about china and iran or the start of a holy war in israel and europa..
