Eat more fats (not carbs, which produce sugars) and proteins.

Not unhealthy fats, but 'good fats' load up on nuts (that have lots of good fats and chemicals to make the bad fats good for you). Eat more lean meat.

Most likely you have modified your diet - removing carbs and sugars without replacing them with some other form of calorie.

Re: I am diabetic and losing a lot of weight fast. How can I prevent this?
Actually I am type 2, diagnosed about 4 months ago, My A1C was 10.8 but is not down to 6.9 and my sugar ran in the 500's . I have always been small, but since I started the metformin , I continue to lose weight, I have got my sugar under control, but I do cheat every once in a while. as long as i dont go over 60 carbs a meal and snacks are 30 carbs, I seriously cant figure it out. my brother died at 52 with diabetes and my mom and dad also had it. I am thinking of going to an diabetic doctor instead of a family doctor since I do have some issues with my feet etc. but I also have cholesterol so i am limited in diet there also. drives me crazy trying to figure all this out. what i can eat for diabetes , i cant eat with the cholesterol and vice versa. I feel a lot better it is just I cant afford to lose anymore , i will look like skeleton. Thanks for all the advice I will seek answers on it...

Re: I am diabetic and losing a lot of weight fast. How can I prevent this?
I assume you must be a type 1 diabetic. If you are losing weight, that means you do not have your insulin medication under control and your body is being forced to burn ketones for fuel. For a type 1 diabetic, this is a serious situation as you can go into ketoacidosis. This "state" is considered a medical emergency.

A type 1 diabetic cannot produce endogenous insulin (from the beta cells of the pancreas) and it is insulin that helps bring glucose into the cells that use it for fuel and helps keep glucose within a normal range. Thus, type 1 diabetics are required to take synthetic or an exogenous source of insulin in order provide cells the fuel that is needed and to maintain blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
When glucose cannot go into the bodies cells due to lack of insulin, energy metabolism is severely affected.

Inappropriate weight loss occurs as a result of the body burning proteins and fat for fuel, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) persists causing micro and macrovascular complications and elevated ketone levels are also found in the blood and urine. Ketoacidosis a serious situation. To avoid it, see your primary care physician to adjust your insulin.

If you are taking insulin, then your insulin dosing needs to be corrected so that your glucose is better managed.

If you were originally diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic, it is possible that you have converted to a type 1 diabetic (unintended weight loss as a sign) and you must see a physician to modify your treatment to include insulin and accommodate your new medical status.

Hope this helps.

I knew someone would hit the nail on the head, here. This is exactly what I was going to write. Both my brother and sister have Type I Diabetes - my brother diagnosed at age 3 (when I was 12) and my sister at age 19. This was how we grew up - learning everything there is to know about Type I Diabetes - which, is not the same disease as Type 2 (although the results/consequences are similar - Type I is an auto-immune disease).

When I read "losing weight" the first thing I thought was Type I not IN CONTROL and probably has a bad A1C and high sugar.

Now, if you are Type 2, I can't really offer much by way of suggestions...but what "guest" wrote above is dead on if you are Type I.

And, either way, seek advice from a GOOD endocrinologist. There's a lot of family docs and interns that THINK they understand Diabetes but many do NOT and operate on "old school" information...A good endocrinologist can not only save your life, but help you manage your disease for least amount of consequence and gain normalcy. Please, if nothing else, seek one out.

Just my two cents.....

Apparently, diabetes type one may have been directly caused by very low vitamin D level. Are you having other health problems?

Diabetes type 1 appears to have been caused by very low vitamin D level.

No idea if correcting vitamin D deficiency helps with it. Google it and see if you can find it but vitamin D deficiency can cause many others problems so might as well fix that.

Skynate:

I urgently recommend that you see an endocrinologist and get a full work-up. Metformin is not usually associated with weight loss and I am pleased to see that your glucose and A1c are under better control.

Your weight loss may be as simple as a result of eating less calories per day, given that you have and are trying to figure out what you can eat. Calories also count, so if you are eating less than you expend every day, then you will burn stored fat as a fuel source - that's how people intentionally lose weight. In your case, by trying to control your macronutrient intake to control your health condition, you may have unintentionally placed yourself in a negative calorie balance. For most type 2 diabetics, weight loss is desirable, but clearly your type 2 diabetes has a strong genetic vs lifestyle contribution. Lifestyle/obesity is the strongest MODIFIABLE predictor of type 2 diabetes, but actually family history is a stronger independent overall predictor. Although, the majority of cases of type 2 diabetes is associated predominately with lifestyle/obesity interacting with some level of genetic predisposition, there are pathways to diabetes, independent of obesity. A good endocrinologist will be able to identify your probable mechanism.

Your weight loss may be associated with your diagnosis and a possible need for insulin, especially if there is insulin insufficiency due to beta cell degradation. This pathway to diabetes may have a completely genetic component and has nothing to do with weight. Metformin reduces hepatic glucose output, so if you have reduced, but not absent insulin action, it is likely that your weight loss, which is typical of a type 1 diabetic could manifest in your case. This situation is serious and calls for prompt and appropriate medical management (which a good endocrinologist will be able to diagnose and treat.)

Finally, your weight loss may not be a consequence of your condition, but of something else entirely. This you and your specialist need to rule out.

So I urge you to quickly take action and see an endocrinologist for a complete workup, correct diagnosis, and proper treatment.

All the best.

How long have you been diagnosed with diabetes?
Type I or Type II?
ARe you insulin dependent? If so, how much?
What did you weigh before? How much have youlost in what amount of time?

What do you weigh now?
Do you smoke or drink?

Some questions need to be addressed first to get some history.

Let's start here before "remedies" are suggested

Can extreme low-calorie diet cure diabetes?
-snip-
A study conducted at Newcastle University (UK) shows that type 2 diabetes can be completely reversed, not with medication, but through following a 600-calorie diet for two months.

The diet consists solely of liquid diet drinks and low starch vegetables for two months. At the end of the two months, the subjects of the study were given advice on portion control and healthy eating, and then "resumed normal eating".

Study was conducted with eleven volunteers with diabetes. Ten of the eleven returned for followup tests after three months. Of these ten, seven remained completely free of diabetes.

Re: I am diabetic and losing a lot of weight fast. How can I prevent this?
Karu: It depends on the underlying cause of the onset of type 2 diabetes. If it is primarily due to lifestyle/obesity, then similarly to bariatric surgery, weight loss of some magnitude does result in normalizing blood sugar. It is primarily the intentional weight loss caused by a negative calorie balance (less calories taken IN than you expend each day) that subsequently normalizes blood sugar. The mechanism is increased insulin sensitivity of adipocytes (fat cells). More info is available, if needed.

The interesting thing about the study you mention is that the results are consistent with national estimates of % resolution of type 2 diabetes after bariatric surgery - roughly 80% of patients resolve type 2 diabetes. Makes sense.

I would be more concerned with long term metabolic disorder caused by the low caloric intake for that long of a period.

Karu: VLCD must be managed by experts. This is an approach to lose significant weight under supervision. Then once the weight is lost, a regular maintenance diet is provided along with exercise and behavioral support. It is a comprehensive program. I would not suggest a person on their own go on a VLCD. You are correct - it can be dangerous.

The bottom line point though is that through a significant weight loss, a rather large proportion of people with type 2 diabetes can normalize their blood sugar.

Karu: A regular intentional healthy unsupervised weight loss for obesity-related type 2 diabetes would also result in normalizing blood glucose, if the magnitude of the weight loss was sufficient.

So, for example, a 1200 to 1800 calorie diet for a female (baseline calories allotted depends on her baseline weight) along with daily exercise expenditure that results over time in significant weight loss would also work. It doesn't have to be as quick or drmatic as the VLCD approach.

Re: I am diabetic and losing a lot of weight fast. How can I prevent this?
Karu:

A very low calorie diet used in a precise manner for a specific objective and for a specific timeframe under physician supervision will not ruin a person's metabolism. If a person used this strategy unsupervised and willy-nilly, then it could cause some acute problems. A person who is 100 pounds overweight already often (not always) has major health problems. The risk of bariatric surgery or other dramatic approaches to aid in weight loss must be balanced against a potential benefit. Not every obese person is a candidate for these strategies.

You need a nutritionist/dietician. For US medical insurance you will need to have your doctor refer you.

You have reduced your carb intake to meet your diabetic needs, but you have not replaced those calories with something else. As such, you are now ingesting less calories, which you are burning off.

And yes you need a specialist.

To maintain body weight or gain weight, you must have proper sugar control. If your body can not convert the food you consume into energy, then it targets your reserves.

Check your blood sugar and check it often. Adjust medications/insulin as needed. Eat balanced meals, dont skip breakfast. Starving yourself will actully throw your metabolism off, and screw with your blood sugars. Sounds like your sugars are way out of wack! Talk to your doctor.
