We live in SA a nice place to live. Cheaper than living in CALIF but news flash - MX's are everywhere and so are a lot of other races. This is the U S, we are a melting pot, but TX seems to havehave merged with Mexcio as with AZ and CAL, but the U S has become Americo! Get over it! We entered into agreement with Mexico years ago when we had everything printed in spanish and the phone became press one for English - and we changed over DL's to be read in spanish - it as done way back in the early 70's maybe even before that, I dont know cause I moved to LA in 1970 very young and worked with many immigrants or illegals - businesses hired them for cheap labor. Minority owned business were given special perks and loans. I worked for a white American man - who married a Mx woman, and he put the biz in her name to be able to receive the benefits of a minority owned business, also govt contracts had to be awarded to a certain amount of minority businesses.
I was told to answer the phone HAPPY HOLIDAYS - as not to offend any race,,, seriously , way back in the 70s this was all taking place, and no one reaized where we were going with all of this?
Then we entered into Nafta with Mexico.
San Antonio caters to Mexico - we have fights daily from Mexioc City to and from SA - our economy depends upon rich Mexicans coming up here to shop at our high end mall that was built a few years ago. I live on a block that is a mixture of all races - we are what we are ... if you dont like it here, then dont come here - but you better face facts, the face of America has changed and it is what it is. I can tell you with 100% certainty that LA is 10000 times nicer than anything you'll drive through across the 10. One million Americans now live in Mexico, and 600,000 of that number are in Mexico City, according to research conducted by a university professor in Mexico. These new projections, substantially greater than what both the Mexican and U.S. Government agencies heretofore have suggested, appear to be nothing more than the byproduct of sloppy research. While the guessing game continues, Mexico has announced a national identity card program for foreign residents, and the creation of a database to track their whereabouts. The national identity card program may finally produce an the answer to the question, "How many Americans live in Mexico?"

The Americans-in-Mexico question was discussed in an earlier article I wrote for this website; instead of moving closer to an answer, however, it now seems that we've moved further away (then again, maybe not). Reports of the new estimates are muddying-up the waters of the discussion, but post-September 11th immigration rule changes in Mexico hold the promise of producing more reliable demographic information about all foreigners in Mexico, not just Americans.

Discussing these new estimates at a September, 2001 meeting of The American Society in Mexico City, Universidad de las Américas-Puebla, social anthropologist Professor Mary Alcocer-Berriozábal, Ph.D., reported that research she conducted for her doctoral thesis (University of Kansas, 2000) indicated that the number of U.S. citizens living in Mexico is 1 million, and that 600,000 of those live in Mexico City.

Of the U.S. citizens residing in Mexico, I think it is generally acknowledged that relatively few of these people formally register their presence in-country with one of the consular offices. (U.S. citizens in Mexico really aren't different than their countrymen in other parts of the world, from what I've read on the citizen-registration issue.) In addition, there are an undetermined number of U.S. citizens who spend varying amounts of time in Mexico on a tourist card (FMT) or with no visa whatsoever (particularly in the approximately 20 mile-wide border zone).

Professor Alcocer told me that an employee of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico reported to her that, "for each American that does report him/herself to the American consulate/embassy in Mexico, he (the official) believes there to be an additional 4 to 5 Americans who do not report because it is not mandatory." That statement doesn't seem far fetched, and when I asked her for the number of Americans the Embassy employee told her had registered, the Professor didn't answer the question…

In addition, between a half-million and a million American citizens live in Mexico.

That page was updated last November, so there hasn't been time for things to change much. Interestingly, I've found references to the same number being quoted in 2000. In one of them, the person quoting thinks that's wildly overstated, and does some research. What he learned was, as of 2000:

The official number of U.S. citizens residing in Mexico, including students, business persons temporarily in Mexico, immigrants, and legal residents is 124,082.

Contrast this with the State Department's claim of at least a half million, and it looks like Mexico may also have a problem with illegal American immigrants. Indeed, the US Embassy pretty much said that:

The Embassy staff who assisted me in this verification commented that, "The number strikes us as low . . . There are certainly MANY Americans who cross into Mexico via land border who never register with immigration. We at the consular services see a great number of Americans who have been here as long as a year without so much as a passport."

Presuming everyone's right, and further presuming nothing's changed much since 2000, then there are probably about 150,000 legal American immigrants living in Mexico, plus something between 300,000 and 850,000 illegals.

U.S. illegals in Mexico do take advantage of the free health care. All you have to do to get it here is say that you can't afford to pay it--no proof is asked for.
