scottfree User ID: 1439499 United States 06/27/2011 11:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The last time there was a big fire in Los Alamos, they had been talking about the major cleanup that was about to be performed there to clean up what had been dumped in the area there from 1945 and on. Just one day before this, most recent fire broke out, I heard on the local news, ( I live in NM) That they were planning to do a major cleanup because of all the debris that had been dumped there over the years from 1945 and on...... Next day I heard about the fire. Talk about yer deja vu..... Make of it what you will, but with the fire they will be saving 100's of millions of dollars in clean up costs, or delaying it like happened the last time. The fire has grown to between 6 and 9 square miles of mixed conifer and ponderosa pine and firefighters have no containment. The blaze started at around 1 p.m. Sunday on private land about 12 miles southwest of the town of Los Alamos. Between 50 and 100 rural homes were under mandatory evacuations, and Los Alamos County authorities have issued voluntary evacuation orders for both Los Alamos and White Rock. The laboratory has activated its emergency operations center. Officials said in a news release that all radioactive and hazardous material was being protected and the fire had not yet crossed onto the laboratory property. The fire is 1 mile southwest of the boundary of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The government site was founded during World War II to develop the world's first nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, the biggest wildfire in Arizona history is now 82 percent contained after burning through 538,000 acres in the White Mountains in northeast Arizona. The fire started May 29 and has destroyed 32 homes. It's believed to have been caused by a campfire. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

[link to hisz.rsoe.hu] Just me or is the stories really mixed up and gov't can't keep story straight? I thought residents were under "forced voluntary evacuations" not "mandatory" evacuations. Also, why did this 'update' divert attention away from the fire near Los Alamos, which is 0% contained, to the fire in Arizona which they ended by saying is "82%" contained. For someone who didn't carefully read the article... they might just interpret it as now the fire is 82% contained. I like that site a lot by the way, unfortunately, their info is only as fast as it is released to us. Therefore, sometimes I wonder if I could use it as an immediate/emergency monitor. Either way, I like the world map feed VERY much. |
