You really don't need to add butter, cause the beef already has fat which will melt. So it's your choice..

Actually I don't do it myself. My boyfriend used to do this on a regular basis.. NOW he enjoys his meats broiled, grilled and baked with minimum spices..

I go well out of my way to only eat foods I recognize.. Nothing processed if I can avoid it..

and sure butter's good, just a little to release the beef's juice for frying. i use a little olive oil to quick fry my ribeye steaks. hot pan, 3-4 min each side. sizzle!

Salt your pan fairly well. Put the steak in on low heat.

It'll "fry" in its own juices.

Keep flippin' it.

Might have to add a tablespoon of water at some point in the operation.

Oil and butter aren't absolute necessities to "fry" something.
