Jesus first confirms this is the truth revealed to Peter by the father. It's easy to see from this confirmation what the proper context of the "tell no one" statement means. As for Peter denying Christ, he denied his association with him in order to protect himself from those who were hunting down his followers. It had nothing to do with denying him as being the messiah.
