General,

I'm with you on the BK2. I have a first gen. I would definitely get the micarta scales for it.

My new knife is the Ontario Sp52.

If you have a Camillus made Becker you might want to sell it or put it aside.....Buy yourself a Kabar for using cuz collectors are paying a hefty premium for the Camillus ones....
 Quoting: dookie stain 1404507

dook,

1st gen Kabar not the orig Camillus.
I wish!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1361338

I prefer the exposed pommel on the 2nd generation BK2's. If you have the money check these sheaths for them out.

Kinda pricey for a $60 knife, but the original kydex sheath is junk IMHO.

I also have an Aqualung/US Divers Master Dive knife that I love. I traded a SEAL my Ka-bar for it back before the Internet was so popular. Other than being stainless, that knife has taken a beating very well.

Re: Your favorite Bugout, Survival piece of equipment
well morphine is almost impossible to get, but the lesser version of it TRAMADOL is easier to obtain as a pain-killer or pain-easer.
maybe you can use that in your medipack??
i don,t want to give anyone idea,s for drugs or something but i get it that its only ment for emergency uses is it not??

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1298243

Not strictly true dude, tramadol is a synthetic opiod, where as morphine is an opiate, but tramadol is also illegal here without prescription anyway; although it would be a useful medication to have as a moderate painkiller.

Codiene is over the counter here, codiene is basically methyl-morphine, so technically with some chemistry know how you can demethylate the codeine and turn it into morphine. Would require some basic chemistry equipment though.

On short SHTF notice an alternative such as ketamine might be easier to obtain, ie vet supplier. Often used at stables for horses.

i live in holland where there is much much much water everywhere, so my next buy is gonna be an inflatible kayak(with some repairkits and 2 component expanding foam if an irrepairable leak appears i fill the chambers with that.)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1298243

I have an inflatable boat, but dont plan on taking that with me, too big, bulky and heavy.

With some plastic tubing you could make a small boat with a few rolls of waterproof duct tape. A lin of some kind of resin would help too.

Basically just build a three sided frame, and wrap the tape around the tubing in a hull shape. Make shift boat that weighs about 5lb.

Principle is the same, but a boat that big is overkill.

Re: Your favorite Bugout, Survival piece of equipment
My katydyn water filter & flint and steel & real nice med kit (with the knowledge on how to use it).Ultralite bivy, ultralte bag & hammock, vicodin.
 Quoting: FUBAR

The med kit is the hard part.

Wish i could legally own morphine, diazepam, epinephrine and half a dozen very important survival medications. Some of the very strong antibiotics are hard to obtain also.

IV equipment is pretty important too, its amazing how fast infection complications like diarrhoea can kill people if you dont have a drip.

Somebody could catch crypto from river water after being a bit rundown after a few weeks on the move and it could end badly.

for me personally, ive started collecting a few months ago every month i buy certain items, medikits, tarp, knife, axe, saw
rope, en food and a waterfilter of course.

i live in holland where there is much much much water everywhere, so my next buy is gonna be an inflatible kayak(with some repairkits and 2 component expanding foam if an irrepairable leak appears i fill the chambers with that.)
i wanna go on bike or on foot so no hardshell kayak for on top of a car, its no use, there,s gonna be traffic for dozens of miles long everyday, let alone if there ever would be a disaster here.

i also need a tent and woodgasburningstove and some more stuff.
got my 100 liter backpack today in the mailorder.
its gonna go on my back for walking and on my bikeluggage cart if i go for distances.
well my new bug out bike is gonna be a cheap one as i think i leave it behind somewhere if it needs to be.
the bike cart i choose is also manageable as a handcart and i choose a 2 person kayak so the handcart should fit in nicely, also a 2 person kayak can handle more luggage weight

well every month nothing happens i get more usefull stuff.
and even when nothing happens?? well i don,t want it to go bad, but i know that it,s gonna be bad.

i might have the flee my home, or kicked out of my home if i can,t afford the mortgage anymore because of bad economy.
well then i have no choice to survive.
better to see it now and act on it now, most people of holland are just as ignorent as the rest of the world.
so arrogant, nothing will happen to us.

well we will see.

FYI....

When the temps go below freezing or below....
....the fuel sometimes becomes too cold to turn from liquid into gas and the result is it won't come out the lighter nozzle.

Don't count on them in cold environments.....and over time they do "leak out".

I'll agree with this.
Cold temps won't stop Bic lighters from working, that's a myth.
They ALWAYS work and NEVER leak unless the lever is depressed.

Re: Your favorite Bugout, Survival piece of equipment
Think about getting (and pre-packing) a backpack setup for going someplace like the Appalachian Trail (or Pacific Coast trail) for a month or so as your basic set up. THEN test out all the gear on a 3 to 5 day trip!!!

Once you have actually CARRIED the equipment and used it for a few days THEN and ONLY THEN can you separate the wheat from the chaf.

needed items imo in importance to basic survival:
#1 Water
#2 Staying dry
#3 Having shelter
#4 Staying warm
#5 Food
#6 Staying safe (this is where guns "might" come in ... way down the list)
#7 Remaining mobile (ie: light weight)

The reality of a TRUE BOB bag is that unless you are going to be in an area with high personal risk from animals or people you can NOT carry heavy weaponry!! (or heavy anything) You are going to be limited to light weaponry or NO weaponry only.

Yep ... all over the varous boards one reads that people are going to carry this or that weapon with LOTS of ammo. I dare them to actually pack for a two week trip on the Appalachian or Pacific Coast trail and ACTUALLY CARRY on their backs what they say they would take on either of those trails, for even 5 days!! When faced with reality they will quickly realize that they are just Arm Chair outdoorsmen and are NOT PHYSICALLY CAPABLE of doing what they claim they will do.

If one is ALWAYS going to remain vehicle bound then of course one can carry a LOT more stuff ... but if that is the case then face the issue up front that one is going to be limited to vehicle travel ... and once one can no longer buy gasoline whenever and whereever they want then one's plans are toast.

Re: Your favorite Bugout, Survival piece of equipment
to add to my post above:

Staying warm:
Is your gear capable of keeping you "warm" in the coldest temperature of both your area, AND the next climatic zone north of you, on the absolutely COLDEST days that occure in that area (NOT the average ... that won't kill you, the absolute WORST days will kill you)

GLP
