Look, here's how it really works.
You MUST have a patent. But this ONLY protects you from letting other get away with stealing the idea... in court.

Next you have to push the idea onto companies that can produce it and market it.

Depending on what it is, who you take your patented invention to of course. Most will want to control it, and pay you for licensing, and selling the invention. They will want at least 51 percent share in the patent/proceeds. THAT is a VERY good deal, but usually they will want more since they have to do all the work. Realistically you can expect only getting 30 percent of the take from sales. Maybe less, depending on valuable the thing is...

It's a lot to think about, but it's also a good deal this way.
Unless it's small, needed badly, it's best to do the above. If it's small enough, and you don't expect sales to exceed your ability to produce and package it, you should do it your self and hire a marketing group. :-) You get more of the sales proceeds this way, but all the work.!!.
