A Rant Against Facebook
DISCLAIMER: This is a rant against Facebook. So, if you want to complain that it's just a useless rant and that these words accomplish nothing - go ahead, no points to you for pointing out the obvious. But if you agree with the rant or have your own observations about how useless, idiotic and even perverse Facebook culture is: I'd like to hear them. I believe that this type of 'communication' is actually undermining real conversation and communication. Real voices and expression are being overtaken with LOL's and BRB's and :) and :( - a regression to the symbols such as cavemen painted on caves. It seems so perverse that so much technology could bring about so much primitive behavior . And yet it seems to spread every day. It seems unstoppable. Anyhoo, here we go with the rant...

What the fuck is up with Facebook!? (Classic rhetorical opening there) All these idiots are posting shit like: "Wen shoping tooday. YAH!"[sic] (This is usually accompanied by a picture of them holding arms outstretched with two bags full of indefinable consumer items). And what's amazing is that people respond to this shit. What amazes me even more is that a comment like that can get dozens of responses. Really? This fucker accomplished something that needs to be broadcast to the world? This idiot went shopping and everyone is now supposed to give an electronic "Yeah!!!" in response? And God forbid if you comment: "So fucking what?"

Even worse is the type that posts: "Mom died today. Really sad now". Really? That's the best they can do to express their grief and anguish? They log onto their computer and broadcast to 1,774 theoretical "friends" that they are 'sad' because their mother died. That's the appropriate way to deal with grief now? Broadcasting the fact out to mythical associates, in ten syllables or less, that something really tragic happened to you is now an appropriate method of mourning?

Basically, I believe that Facebook is leading to a dumbing down of communication. And complex communication is the essence of what makes humans special. I therefore think Facebook is a threat (or at least a symptom of a far greater problem). There are just a few examples presented here. What else did I miss??

I use it to sell my jewellery. I don't know how to build a website & can't afford to pay over $400 to get someone to do one for me so I made a page (for the products I sell with pics etc) joined local buy, swap & sell pages & then advertise my page on there. I've had quite a few inquiries so at least I'm using it to my advantage.

I agree with this point you made about real conversation/expression being undermined by the "one-liner" text response.
I've been thinking about this lately and it seems to be a new movement which has been brought on largely by the text/sms format in general.
People are adopting this new form of "empty-speak" as a (semi)primary source of interaction with others.
Granted when one wants to convey something like "lunch plans changed to 2:30 at Joe's diner" then texting is pretty handy but when it's used to converse on a social/personal level it's on par with gorilla-grunting in terms of substance.
I suppose the big question here is what's this going to lead to down the road in years to come. I get this vision of the scene in Wall-E where everyone has their face smushed into some pda device and never look at one another.
..oh and of course we get dumber..fatter..

btw, sombody posted on my wall today they were "sleepy and needed a nap" 3 people "liked this"
The movie "Idiocracy" is prophetic indeed

Attention all passengers: JOKE ALERT! Please fasten your belts. Some of us will miss it!

In fact, I'm married with kids and a job and a mortgage and a dog and lawn that badly needs mowing. I am not a lonely 'emo' living in his mother's basement. (But still I do have loads and loads of girlfriends)

But I shouldn't be so defensive. In a site like GLP you get hit with so much shit that it makes it hard to tell sometimes. No harm no foul. You just thought you saw what you saw. No problem.

Actually, your post did remind me of another bad point about Facebook: The 'Emo Vampire'. This type of asshole is on Facebook everyday complaining about how this went wrong and that went wrong and how unfair life is, blah, blah, blah. Everyone piles in and adds their sympathy card and nobody every questions the fact that this motherfucker has been whining for two years straight and never seems to have an answer for any of their own problems.

Good job Flesh for reminding me of another type to rant about!

This world is getting more and more like idiocracy as each day passes, another prime example is what they watch on tv, shows about people getting kicked in the balls etc has very similar parallels to Jackass.

Personally i use facebook but only because im young and if i dont it can be very difficult to have a social life, Its ridiculous you dont post anything on your facebook for a week & your "friends" start to think you hate them or some stupid shit.

I have always been a fan communicating over the internet but facebook has really killed it! Its just people posting mindless garbage about nothing or stupid youtube videos about cats or charlie the unicorn but when you try and post a video of some importance about world events etc nobody gives a fuck and goes back to their mindless drivel.

Re: A Rant Against Facebook
Here's one of the things that's bugging me lately about the evolution of technology. Everyone is on their stupid smartphones all the time, while they are walking, while they are out with friends, while they are stopped at the stoplight.

They read their emails on their phones in those situations and I feel that it is killing email.

I used to have long, meaningful exchanges with people by email, it seemed very intimate, you knew the person was sitting in their dark room alone at night when they were reading your emails, just as you were when you were writing to them.

I hate to even write a decent email with any kind of content to it, thinking that someone is going to skim it while they are in the middle of something else, in some busy distracting environment.

I'll tell you, I was talking to someone about this the other day, I totally want to go back to writing paper letters and sending postcards, I already started, and my friend said she felt the same way and was definitely writing letters all the time.

That is truly scary.

Just keep talking friend. Talk with your mouth and words. Talk all you can and refuse to dumb yourself down. Keep speech alive. Talk and write with words that have meaning. Don't give in to grunting and scratching electronic symbols.

Unfortunately, I think the assessment that too many are now grunting like gorillas is too true. This could really end up being the Planet of the Apes; but we have met the apes and they is us. LOL.

The other issues with facebook is people in the age bracket of 15-28 could not give a fuck less about their privacy, they are more than happy to have private conversations on a public website, state their plans for the weekend or their where abouts at every second with stupid shit like foursquare.

I much prefered the days of IRC/MSN as a way to communicate with friends online! As for killing conversation i dont think you have to much to worry about most of my generation is illiterate and incapable of independent thought!

Straight out of the mountains of West Virginia, I suspect.

I got 'kin' myself. I was thinking about the matter the other day as a matter of fact. They can be a problem; the old Scotch-Irish mountain men can be real sons-of-bitches. Still, there's some good there. That's another thread though dear.

I get what you are saying.

If I may... here are some others I find on Facebook.

The "Life is Good" type... this is really a "my life is better than yours" poster who usually is bitterly unhappy in their present situation and thinks that if they affirm it enough, not only will others believe it but they will achieve it...

The "God has Blessed Me" ... translated "look at all my worldly possessions... ie...My husband's toys..insert photo of porsche...

Then their are the ones who send out urgent "please pray for my..." whether is is for rain, fires, the ill etc... funny thing is sometimes they never follow up on the request to say if all that praying worked..

Next there is the "smart ass status shuffler" "my happy tank is 50 percent full today" person who doesn't have the creativity to come up with his own witty status and therefore employs the computer generated status to show a saracasm they do not actually possess.

There is also the "newscaster" who posts news items like wrecks and severe weather warnings or burn bans as it gives them a sense of importance because everybody likes local news...lol

and then the "Look how sexy I've become" posters who post photos ...self portraits actually photographed in front of their bathroom mirror so they get THE perfect pose..usually after freshly bleaching their teeth and getting a new hairdo ...

and how about the I am so different from everybody else... my musical tastes are soooooo varied and underground..they posts music videos of the B'side of the old vinyls...

At the end of the day it comes down to social engineering & facebook is a fantastic means of gathering back a sheep mentality in younger people, as many people my own age shy away from things like MTV & other television in favour of downloading what they want to watch it can be more difficult to warp their brains with advertising etc.
