The biggest energy drain in your house isn't the fridge, ac/heater- its the TV set-top box.
A recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) made headlines when it revealed that the biggest energy drain in your house likely isn't the fridge, air conditioner, or heater--it is, unbelievably, the TV set-top box. These ridiculously energy-inefficient boxes, typically provided by your cable company, have received little scrutiny until now, which means the cable companies have had little reason to embrace readily available methods to decrease their energy use. We've put together a list of the best and worst existing set-top boxes, so you can at least know what you're getting.

First, some background. How could that little innocent cable box that provides so many hours of Monk reruns actually use more energy than a giant refrigerator? The problem is that modern DVRs and other set-top boxes aren't regular one-function appliances; they're just specialized computers, with a different exterior. They house energy-sucking hard drives, modern processors, HD video cards, and all kinds of other components you'd find in a regular computer. Except when you're not using a computer, you shut it down (at least, we hope you do). Not so for set-top boxes.

The NRDC found that "Today’s set-top boxes operate at near full power even when the consumer is neither watching nor recording a show," and that set-top boxes are only in use about a third of the time they're running. It raises the question: Why don't people just shut down their boxes when not in use? The answer is in two parts: First, they don't realize they should, and second, set-top boxes take awhile to start up--like a computer (which is what they are), rather than the instant-on of a TV. Customers are not accustomed to waiting a few minutes for their TV to be available, and so leave the boxes on all the time, which in turn means the cable providers don't have any motivation to reduce startup time, let alone make them more efficient.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. Let's figure this out:

Say the A/C has an "on" time of 1 hour in a day. That consumes 5 kW-hrs. Call it $0.75

The 30 Watt box runs 24 hours per day. 0.03 X 24 hrs = 0.72 kW-hrs or around $0.11

30 Watts sounds about right from the transformer that hooks to the cable box.

Please correct me if I am in error.

And, after replacing the broken, inefficient appliances, (washer/dryer, freezer, refrigerator, vacuum, A/C, etc.) with 'energy efficient' brand new models...its the cable companies who are out of date energy hogs !

That's amazing. Reminds me of the gov't waste we read about.

I don't recommend doing it at night as that is often when they upgrade.. and you usually have stuff you want to PVR then too. I'd say if you go to work during the day, shut it off then and you should notice quite a good savings in the bill. Make sure to power bar switch or unplug it though.

Yea I keep my digital tv converter thingy on, because it takes for ever for it to rebuilt it's on-screen tv guide when it starts up..

Even if it's a small thing without recording capabilities, that's still not so good.. plus the sound system drains power even when not in use, etc.

If it's got a light that stays on even when off, chances are the electronic device is draining more power than it should

Curious what else are things you can do to drop the bill as far as electronics go.

Flat screen tv's suck an incredible amount of energy also.
Even when you turn them off, the little light is still on.

We put it all on a power strip which can be turned off, which stops the drain caused by the little red lights on the tube and the wireless antenna.

Things like unplugging your coffee maker and other stuff from the wall.

A lot of things pull current when they are not turned on.

You can buy a tester that you plug into the wall socket, then plug your appliance into it. It shows how much it is pulling on or off. You can get them at home depot or the like I believe.

I heard that a couple of weeks ago and have started unplugging all cable/entertainment devices every night when I go to bed. Everything is plugged into a surge protecter, so unplugging only involves disconnecting from one wall outlet. I also keep toaster and coffee maker unplugged when not in use. Every little bit helps.
