There are about 400 friends of the church, we were told the church would make arrangements for them to reside within Vatican city. This is highly unusual and makes little sense as we know that most rooms in vatican city are occupied.

Thats a nice cover, we have done conferences before and the orders were never worded as strong as this. Normally its an invitation, this was an order.

I think you can find more dots to connect by goggling southern hemisphere observatories for the Vatican visiting astronomers. Most of those astronomers have arrangements for coming to Rome in late July, one way tickets.
