In the USA, if you are not White, you aren't considered a real American even born here?

When I talk to other Asians I know, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc, that were all born here, I ask why don't they just call themselves American?
The responses were a bit an eye opener. Many of them feel they grew up being told by many they aren't Americans or even belong here so they just gave up identifying the "American" part.
Even the Hispanics openly drop the "American" part of their heritage and say they're proud to be considered Mexican or Latin because that's the stigma they grow up.
same can be said with middle easterns.

They don't even have to say they're American because they're already labeled as one. But it seems as if an Asian can speak proper English, they seem to get a sarcastic remark as "oh, you can speak English...how long were you in this country? When did you come here?" instead of thinking that person was born in America. Since today is Independence Day, you'd think many of Euro decent would remember the oppression their own ancestors dealt with in their own country but quickly forget about those history for those that aren't the same color as they are.
