What did Mexicans speak BEFORE they were conquered by the Spaniards and why are they so attached to spanish since its not even their native language??? THAT is the point of this thread. The illegal aliens in Texas hate english because they feel its the language of white European invaders (never mind the fact that they got their asses kicked in a war and lost it fair and square so its no longer theirs) yet they cling to the spanish language and love it but its not their native language either. Why are they so hypocritical?

There were MANY 'Indian' dialects. And Native so-called Indians were tribal and constantly warring with other tribes. MOST 'Indians' by far weren't Aztec and the Aztecs oppressed and killed their ancestors, but because Aztecs are 'cool' and hip, they all pretend they're Aztec.

Standard Mexican Spanish is very different from Standard Castillian European Spanish, although they are mutually intelligeable.

"Good" literate Mexican Spanish is intelligeable throughout Latin America.

The slang Mexican Spanish spoken by most illiterate Mexicans one encounters in the USA is not intelligeable anywhere else, by anyone else.

The typical Mexican in the USA does not speak "Spanish" by any stretch of the imagination.

What they speak bears exactly the same relationship to Spanish as Haitian Creole ("Kweol") does to Standard French.

Not to mention it is a very stratified society down there, and the darker the skin color the more you are discriminated against. All of the "leaders" in Mexican government are lighter skinned.

The above could explain in part why the average Jose down there is so ignorant of the Amerindian portion of his heritage.

Living in a "border" city, we see a lot of those Aztec shirts, etc. worn by Mexicans. I suspect that it was made "cool" and "hip" because of the AZLAN/Reconquista crap (prep for upcoming war?).
