Just odd since wildfires are on the front page of all the newspapers and local news channels until they have been fully contained. Maybe they got lucky and got some rain up there. Or maybe it's still burning and due to the "sensitive location" it's being kept out of the news cycle? |

Radiological monitoring stations have been set up near the fires and no positive radiological readings have been detected 70+ personnel are currently battling the blazes both on the ground and in the air [link to www.nv.doe.gov] No one is covering this story. In fact I think I'm the only one watching. |

The test site offers monthly public tours, often fully booked months in advance. Visitors are not allowed to bring in cameras, binoculars, cell phones, or pick up rocks for souvenirs.[9] While there are no longer any explosive tests of nuclear weapons at the site, there is still subcritical testing, used to determine the viability of the United States' aging nuclear arsenal. Additionally, the site is the location of the Area 5 Radioactive Waste Management Complex, which sorts and stores low-level radioactive waste that is not transuranic and has a half life not longer than 20 years. Bechtel Nevada Corporation (a joint venture of Lockheed Martin, Bechtel and Johnson Controls) ran this complex until 2006. Several other companies won the latest bid for the contract. They then combined to form a new company called National Security Technologies, LLC (a joint venture of Northrop Grumman, AECOM, CH2M Hill and Nuclear Fuel Services[10]). AECOM, known earlier as Holmes and Narver, held the Nevada Test Site contract for many years before Bechtel Nevada Corp. had it.[citation needed] The Radiological/Nuclear WMD Incident Exercise Site (T-1), which replicates multiple terrorist radiological incidents with train, plane, automobile, truck, and helicopter props is located in Area 1, at the former site of tests EASY, SIMON, APPLE-2, and GALILEO.[11] [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

If anything...it would drift to Utah. Northeast with the way our weather patterns have been. What's interesting is that they have put the radiological monitoring systems up. A wee bit concerning, no? And also of note....they have not updated on how many more acres have burned since the 6,000+ number from yesterday. It is obviously more than than now. |

The following is only available in the site's cache-I suggest you save it in case it disappears. Where are the REAL journalists? People who care about human life and life on earth? [link to webcache.googleusercontent.com] Adding more fuel to the fire: Scientists in Canada recently confirmed a theory that forest fires are capable of re-distributing radionuclides over great distances. Over the past half-century, wild fires within the boundaries of the Nevada Test Site - and prescribed burns outside the boundaries - have re-dispersed radioactive particles from atomic testing and dispersal experiments throughout the NTS, the State of Nevada and beyond Nevada's borders. When the BLM proposed a fire management plan in 2001 targeted at forests north of NTS, the Western Shoshone were up in arms, saying the burns would stir up radioactive debris lying dormant in dead trees and affect downwind communities. ...radionuclides, such as plutonium, tend to accumulate in the top few centimeters of the soil. In ... Southern Nevada, where strong winds are commonplace, these radionuclides could easily be re-suspended and carried over distances of many miles. Does anyone know where exactly the smoke is going? Have a weather report on the path of the particulates?? |

Makes sense....I was assuming it was a precautionary measure for what was stored there. I didn't consider what's on the ground. Damn. As to the weather: we are getting the monsoon weather coming up from Arizona right now. So it's blowing north and east. |

As to the weather: we are getting the monsoon weather coming up from Arizona right now. So it's blowing north and east. I know it sucks :( North and east-people should stay indoors as much as possible and get hepa filters imho I have noticed a big spike in the readings I am getting on the West Coast in the last week or so. Today it is the highest-5 times what it was a week ago. I was wondering if the extra was from Nevada/Los Alamos?? Who knows?- add NE to the mix and with FUKU the world is so hurting from all the fallout and will be for ages - seems nuclear energy is Pandora's Box personified these days-worse than a bad sci fi novel |

[link to www.nv.doe.gov] This is the only source of info on this fire. There has been no update on the number of acres burned since the 6th. Good to hear they've got 100% containment on one....at least. |

It's not just sand out there like you'd think of when someone refers to the desert....there's a lot of brush to burn. And we are getting monsoon thunderstorms every afternoon for the last week from Arizona. So....lots o' lightening and thunder around the valley. |
