Can obese people get handicapped parking permits? Why? | |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1458060 07/07/2011 04:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Very overweight people can break bones in their feet from walking too much. You know, there are so many factors to whether people are slim or overweight--and many are not the overweight person's fault. Even if it is--well, we ALL have problems. Today you may be slim, but then you may get in an accident and be laid up for a long time, or your metabolism may quit, whatever, and you will be overweight. If you talk with an overweight woman and get to know her, a lot of times you will find she was sexually abused in her childhood. That's right. I have seen this time and again. And some people may be handicapped and look fine. That gentleman could have a heart problem or something. People should just stop looking at who is parking in these spots. You don't know the person's health, you don't know the situation, so it just leads to unnecessary judgement. |

I forget sometimes what it is like in America. Here in Italy most places don't have big parking lots in front of them--you have to walk a long way to get where you are going handicapped or not. In America, is there really a lack of handicapped parking spots? |

I use to work at a site like this and we would get non stop complaints about people parking in these zones. After having someone I care about end up in a wheelchair I can appreciate it's frustrating and embarrassing for people in wheelchairs when they need that extra large car park just to get out of the car and into their wheelchair, won't even go into finding the nearest access ramp. The doctors disability statement comes from that, not that they were fat which caused the knee problem...Its form over substance. Last Edited by ^Watcher^ on 07/07/2011 05:26 AM |

In Washington State there are so many spots for the "handicapped" you cant even park. Its shit. Fat people need to cut their shit intake and walk to the door. You fat protectors should be ashamed of your self for supporting destructive lifestyle choices like being and saying fat. |

Lack of exercise does NOT LEAD TO OBESITY. You have to do cardio for 1 hour to burn off a can of coke. What leads to obesity is stuffing your face with 6000 calories a day. Lack of exercise can certainly contribute (no calorie burn) but you can only burn off so many calories a day unless you have time to spend 6 hours at the gym or you are an Olympic swimmer. The way your body looks is 90% diet and 10% exercise. These obese people can lose weight by eating 2 instead of 4 full combo meals from McDonalds and drinking water instead of soda. People on medication or really do have thyroid problems are forgiven. They are however, less than 1% of obese people. |

She also has rheumatoid arthritis in her spine. I admit when I ride with her and she parks handi I kind of feel stupid because you can't see her issues. None the less they are there and very severe. | Robot Emotions User ID: 14571066 04/22/2012 01:37 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Doctors will issue placards for all sorts of reasons. I know a guy who is diabetic with peripheral neuropathy (his feet are numb) and he has one because its hard for him to walk very far. My brother is on the liver transplant waiting list and has one. He has very low energy levels and can't walk far without becoming dizzy. But if you just saw him sitting in a chair you'd think he was perfectly healthy (other than a slightly yellowish skin tint.) So as another poster said, consider yourself fortunate a doctor hasn't needed to issue you one. As for obesity being a only factor in getting one, I believe it is solely at the discretion of the doctor signing off on the paperwork. |

It would require them to park at the far end of the parking lot. After all, they should be getting exercise. Quoting: highwater Who agrees? Me. I can fix obese people. | MaryAlananB User ID: 14079338 04/22/2012 04:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a disability parking permit due to spine damage that leaves my feet with no feeling. That makes it dangerous to walk on uneven surfaces because I can trip and fall (I have fallen twice this year because of it, broken foot one time, cracked wrist the other). Also leaves me in massive pain to walk long distances. A lap around the grocery store is about it, sometimes getting back to the car is a challenge and parking to far away would make it much worse. Do I look disabled? No unless you see me walk, I drag my left foot quite a bit and my spine is no longer straight due to calcium buildup between the vertebrae pushing on one side more than the other. Has this made me gain weight? Yes because the docs have had me on prednisolone and it will make you gain weight fast. Don't judge people unless you know their medical history. |

There are also people with no visible handicap, who also need those spaces. I really hate all the judging regarding this topic. (I don't mean you). | Anonymous Coward User ID: 32282018 01/15/2013 02:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are very few cases where someone CAN'T exercise. So maybe they have a leg injury...doesn't stop them from lifting things while sitting down. If someone has limited mobility, they can still exercise, and even if it isn't for very long, the proportional calorie burn will be comparable, since it is harder for them to do anything. It still always comes back to freakin laziness. End of story. |
