That was the M.O. for a long time, but the worldwide crash will be abrupt. The reason it has to be abrupt is to upset the populace to such a degree and cause such utter chaos and despair that they will agree to ANYTHING as better than what it will be in the chaos with masses starving, homeless, and jobless. |

Someone will emerge with solutions to all of the problems. The change will be embraced at first. Just look at how many so quickly cheered that listed proposal for how a new government should be if ideal. You know how wording can be interpreted in multiple ways and rules can change once the dictator has full control. What sounds like a miracle solution may well turn out to be the worst nightmare for the people. Be cautious to jump on the bandwagon of a new global leader with such great ideas. |

physicist User ID: 1422133 United Kingdom 07/10/2011 01:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wikipedia: The interest rate derivatives market is the largest derivatives market in the world. The Bank for International Settlements estimates that the notional amount outstanding in June 2009 [1] were US$437 *trillion* for OTC interest rate contracts, and US$342 *trillion* for OTC interest rate swaps. If any of this goes poof, notional becomes nominal and suddenly a bank is insolvent. Not technically insolvent, but cash-flow insolvent. If that happens, the effect will be like a nuclear detonation. Lehman x 1000. (Lehman was 600Bn, this is 600 Tr). By the way, european banks and indeed all banks borrow short and lend long. They hedge this exposure to movements in short-term rates using interest rate derivatives, so they are all essentially strapped to this ticking nuclear bomb. Good luck evertone. |

There are 3-4 public companies that should be closed down: but again, they do not represent the 4million working Greeks. OSE, public railways, has 8000 employes. Yes they should close down or be sold. But the private sector works twice as hard as the Austrian private sector with half the pay. The problem is that the financial functionality of Greece and other countries was based on the weak currency model: daily devaluations and then a bigger one, and then the cycle again. Countries with hard currencies, like Germany, had a different model. These two financial models were just thrown together ad-hoc 10 years ago: what do you expect?
