Sakurajima IS supervolcano. It is main vent in Aira-caldera wich one is 17x 23km3 wide. There have been VEI 7 erruption and it is capable to vei 7-8 erruption. Sakurajima magma cames directly from aira-calderas magma chamber and biggest freid is that those several erruptions can collapse this mountain to calderas magma chamber. It happened allmost in 1914.

I'm sorry so-qui-li, it is NOT classed as a Supervolcano. If it were a Supervolcano then the RSOE would have the last activity report as todays date and not the 07/07/11 as it states on the Aira Caldera report : [link to hisz.rsoe.hu]

The Aira Caldera as a whole is classed as a Supervolcano, the volcanos within the caldera are classed as Stratovolcanos. Yes there has been some big eruptions but like I said, this volcano is a STRATOVOLCANO, if maybe 2 or 3 erupted at the same time then within the calderas then yeah, you can say the Aira Caldera Supervolcano has erupted but until then, this is only a Stratovolcano and classing it as a Supervolcano is going to make people more worried. If you type Sakurajima, Supervolcano eruption in Google your thread is coming up near the top, this is just going to make people more worried. Please amend your title to reflect the facts, if you don't then it just shows to me and others that your on here just spreading fear.

Please read the following articles which confirms Sakurajima is just a Stratovolcano:

Sakurajima volcano is a geologically young stratovolcano consisting of two N-S aligned and adjoining edifaces, Kita-dake (1117 m) and Minami-dake (1040 m). Naka-dake (1069 m) is a lateral vent of Minami-dake and lies between the two main edifaces. Construction of the volcano is thought to have begun about 13,000 years ago at the southern perimeter of the Aira Caldera which formed as a result of a massive eruption approximately 22,000 years ago. "Old Kita-dake" was active shortly after the Aira Caldera eruption, becoming inactive about 20,000 years ago (Okuno et al. 1997. Nucl. Instr. Meth. Phys. Res. B 123, p.470-474). This was followed by the "Young Kita-dake" stage which involved several eruptions over the period from about 11,500 before present (BP) to 3500 BP. Since then, Kita-dake summit crater has been inactive, and numerous eruptions resulting in the construction of the Minami-dake ediface which partly overlies the south flank of Kita-dake. Historical activity has all been focussed at Minami-dake or vents on the flanks of both edifaces.

Sakurajima (桜島?), also romanized as Sakurashima or Sakura-jima,is an active composite volcano (stratovolcano) and a former island (now connected to the mainland) of the same name in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyūshū, Japan. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption caused the former island to be connected with the Osumi Peninsula.

The volcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earlier eruptions built the white sands highlands in the region.

Sakurajima is a composite mountain. Its summit is split into three peaks, Kitadake (northern peak), Nakadake (central peak) and Minamidake (southern peak) which is active now.

Today's north Peak (北岳 Kitadake?) is Sakurajima's highest, rising to 1,117 metres (3,665 ft) above sea level. The mountain is located in a part of Kagoshima Bay known as Kinkō Bay (錦江湾 Kinkōwan?). The former island is part of the city of Kagoshima. The surface of this volcanic peninsula is about 77 square kilometres (30 sq mi).

Re: SAKURAJIMA SUPERVOLCANO HUGE ERRUPTION NEAR KAGOSHIMA. Local meteorological observatory of Kagoshima warns pyroclastic flow and ash deposits.
Gstar. Sakurajima is stratovolcano and part of aira-caldera wich one is supervolcano and there have been lot of magma and steam around the caldera this year so it is not just sakurajima wich one is active. Whole caldera is active. So thats why i will keep headline because it is possible that sakurajima collapses in the caldera and then there will be 7-8 vei erruption for sure.

They are really lucky that magma in aira caldera is now low viscoty and for now it can flow out from sakurajima but if it cames high viscoty wich is normal...well there is really big problem.

Re: SAKURAJIMA SUPERVOLCANO HUGE ERRUPTION NEAR KAGOSHIMA. Local meteorological observatory of Kagoshima warns pyroclastic flow and ash deposits.
Formation of the Aira Caldera, Southern Kyushu, ∼22,000 Years Ago

Shigeo Aramaki

Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo

About 22,000 years ago a series of large-scale pyroclastic eruptions produced the Aira caldera 20 km × 20 km wide at the northern end of Kagoshima Bay in southern Kyushu. It started with a Plinian pumice eruption (Osumi pumice fall, 98 km3) followed by oxidized, fine-grained Tsumaya pyroclastic flow (13 km3), both erupted from a vent located at the present site of SAKURAJIMA volcano, 8 km south of the caldera center. After a very short pause, violent explosive ejection of the basement rock fragments and pumiceous materials occurred at the central vent, gradually changing itself to a huge eruption column rapidly collapsing to form the Ito pyroclastic flow about 300 km3 in volume. The earliest phase produced up to 30-m-thick Kamewarizaka breccia developed along the caldera rim and charged with basement (lithic) fragments up to 2 m across. The breccia is a near-vent variety of the bottom concentration zone of lithics in the Ito deposit. Various textural features and monotonous petrologic character indicate that the main part of the Ito pyroclastic flow was emplaced by a simple, short-lived eruptive mechanism. The Aira-Tn ash, a fine-grained counterpart of the Ito pyroclastic flow, covered a wide area more than 1000 km from the vent. Evacuation of more than 110 km3 of rhyolitic magma produced a funnel-shaped collapse structure with the center of the magma chamber about 10 km deep. Like many other Japanese Quaternary calderas, the Aira caldera is considered to heave formed not by a piston cylinder-type subsidence utilizing a ring fracture but by coring and high-angle slumping of the wall rocks into a funnel-shaped central vent. The outline of the caldera was strongly controlled by the faults bounding the volcano-tectonic graben forming Kagoshima Bay.

It looks like now there is massive magma field wich one is steaming or there is massive steam erruption going on. I dont know. I reccommend look. [link to 122.20.254.201:443]

From this link wich one is cam 8 you can see how whole area steming and it could be from magma field allso...

Well i think that steam in cam 10 cames only from that big magma erruption wich one was there last night. There is maybe couple new vents open but main vent the sova crater is much bigger.

Well i hope not. But that ash and steam cloud in cam 10 and right is pretty scary. I thik it could be some kind of place where magma goes in the sea.
