The needs are in no particular order Food Shelter Clothing Water Companionship. Your "power" and medicine that so many think is a need is not. It can be if you live the life which demands it. But humans existed for thousands of years without what we now call power, which I call electricity and we can and will be doing it again soon. If you want "off the grid" you must learn to exist without electricity or many of the other amenities this world has to offer. First and foremost you must know what you are leaving and why. |
Tod Shwarze User ID: 1394135 United States 07/11/2011 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are 10 things that you need to consider when going off grid and living on the land. Quoting: Brie217water land shelter food communication power warmth transportation protection waste 1. One of the most important items to find when preparing to go off grid is land with running water on it. Everything else can be brought in but water is essential, one must have a good water source. Ideally, it would be nice if you also had a well on the land. It doesn't matter if there is a house on the property because you can build your own house for as little as $1,000 or for as much as you want, but water...running water would be a nice luxury. Not only do you need water for drinking but you also must have it to irrigate plants, support animals and if you have a decent running stream of water you can have all the electricity you want for FREE! However, even if you can't find a tract of land that has a stream or creek on it you can still set up a water catchment system so don't despair if you can't find water on the land...it's still in the sky! 2. Regarding land, [link to hubpages.com] Stupid expensive, and likely for you not possible. You never own land, someone always has a superceding claim to it. The other stuff, to get a decent set of suppies and spares for most any contingency ( dont forget the spares and duplicates, thing break) You could probably get by if you are thrifty for maybe a million, twice that if you buy retail. Then is the time, the constant maintainance. etc |

If you want to go amish(if they'd have you,) that would be far cheaper, but not what you were hoping for, is it? Excluding living like a savage hunter gatherer, youre gonna need expensive and specific technology. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1457744 United States 07/11/2011 01:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The flat out truth is this: You never actually 'own' a parcel of land. There will always be a fee levied on it in some manner. Of course, that's if you're not booted from 'your' property under eminent domain laws that states that, Federal, state or local government have the legal right to evict you from any land if said land is needed for infrastructure projects or any other reason they can dream up if they want your dirt. They can offer you a reasonable buy-out rate...or simply evict you if you put up a fight. Truth. Now, there IS a way to be free. Off the grid and middle finger to every other human or government on earth and there's not a effing thing they can do to ...legally. Buy yourself a reasonable and manageable vessel of the seas. A sailboat is your best bet. Take some time and learn everything you can about sailing and your craft. Transportation is taken care of, solar is your friend, water is simple to collect, you don't have to worry about taking a dump 'down-river' and there are satellite solutions for communications. (Although it's pretty spotty surrounded by all that water.) Find friendly ports-of-call, dock, plug in for a bit, see the sights, meet the people, hit the seas again. And frankly, even if you're not Christopher Columbus, you can still sail a good portion of the globe within visual sight of the shore if you're not up to 'ocean crossings' just yet. One of the oldest forms of transportation known to man is still one of the last true vestiges of honest freedom. |

You start out assuming the existence of secure private property and that's incorrect as that is the crux of the problem that you really have no safe place to sit on the planet. As long as you store your other property on someone elses land it's not yours and it's not safe either. That's why the ptb want to accumulate the land by bankrupting all, as they can be lord and master over what is on it as nobody will mount a successful challenge to them when the public are all depopulated. |

Oh, understood. My only point was that of all the options available, the open ocean really seems the best bet for long term off-the-grid'ness... And remember, too...if faced with a serious situation far from the sight of land, you begin to realize you have a certain 'frontier justice' scenario. Should you be approached under duress, well...however you decide to defend yourself won't be witnessed by anyone. You're on your own. Of course, this works, unfortunately, the other way around. guest User ID: 1463623 United States 07/11/2011 02:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You need to consider climate, property tax, water source, location (eminent domain issues, growth, etc) soil type, electric source (renewables like wind/solar) and back up fuel like propane, wood....basically, heating, cooling, and electric, security, access to resources, food sources, medical....its complex but can be done with alot of research and smarts. |

NASA design? >Finally, I haven't gone off grid yet. I think that you could go off-grid for about $25,000 very nicely. best of luck. and have fun on that tricycle! |
