I swear the last time I bought it, it was $1. Everything else seems to be the same price, but they are making the packages smaller. I'm seeing more of that than a price increase. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1328412Did you notice that the "quart" of mayo is only 30 ounces now? Yup. Been that way for a couple of years now. And the same quart jar of Hellman's I used to pay $1.79 for is now around $5. I buy store brands 99% of the time- except with mayo. It's Hellman's or nothing for me. Have you noticed the new "half gallon" of ice cream is 48 oz? |

I hope the cost of meat gets so high that the average person will only be able to afford small portions of it. Back before we all turned into a bunch of glutonous fatasses meat was considered a "luxury" for the most part. People ate a reasonable amount of it with a more balanced diet. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1437365in the good old days you had to eat the entire deer/bear/moose/antelope/squirrel/rabbit rapidly...cause the rest would spoil. That's not entirely true. Back then a lot of the extra meat was dried and turned into jerky which can last for years. |

Problem is the price of fish is outrageous around here, and I live near several rivers and a couple of lakes! I live by the Ohio River, you can't eat any fish out of it where I live because it will make you sick, the river is that polluted. I ignored that warning once and I was so sick I had to lay off work a couple of days. Won't be doing that again. In addition, what do you expect food prices to go down, when the diesl price is around $4 a gallon, how much do you think it cost to fill up a semi truck? The higher the price of fuel, the higher your grocery prices will be. |

That's very reasonable when I read some posts of 5 bucks. I don't know where those people live? I live in Seattle and everything is MORE EXPENSIVE. Good to know I'm getting cheap mayo. It's also easy to make fresh mayo. Just eggs, good oil, some salt and lemon juice. Even some pepper is good too. just blend it like crazy! -Everything's more awesome when you lean into it. |

KR47 User ID: 1465304 United States 07/13/2011 05:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is huge demand for lamb in North America right now. I was listening to CBC yesterday and one of Canada's largest producers of lamb had to build two new barns and no longer allow them to free roam his pastures. Quoting: :L 1411909Why? Because Coyotes have been killing them in large numbers. He said he had lost hundreds of lambs last year alone. He had stated that it was cheaper to build new barns and house the animals then it was to control the coyotes. When the reporter asked how did coyotes get so smart...he replied: We killed all the stupid ones. :L "The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. You or someone will need to hold his leg so that he doesnot kick. After the cutting procedure, let the leg go, and he will kick out the blood, which isnot wanted in your meat. While at the farm auction find someone thatwill tell you how to do it. Also while there get a couple suckling pigs and do the same thing for your freezer. Truth will set you free John 8:32 [link to www.youtube.com] We have raised our own hogs before. I would feed them all the leftovers that the family didn't want, plus grass, weeds, feed corn, they will eat anything. They were pretty tasty too. :) Also, we have raised chickens. We are going to do that again. I live just outside the city limits of a small rural town, doubt they'd let us raise hogs like we did when we lived out in the country. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1456443 United States 07/13/2011 06:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is real fair and balanced reporting....... I went to the grocery store this morning and spoke with the store manager. I took him back to the meat department and of course all the dept clerks were on edge but it wasn't about them. You might want to unpin this thread after you hear this report or it could have been a cover up from last night's talk with the meat dept before I got to the manager this morning. First I wanted to know who/where/how/when does the pricing on the meat. The store manager said that pricing is on "AT THE WAREHOUSE"!! I found that odd but then I am not a grocer so if anybody can chime on in with more info please do. I thought pricing would be set by the home office by no less than the CEO's or at least some department there in corporate that manages the wholesale cost of the food the store buys and distributes. I thought it strange that pricing done at the warehouse. Now here it could get trickey............. Perhaps the store manager actually meant that the price is "applied" to the meat item there by a schedule issued by corporate but just failed to tell me or elaborate. You know how it goes........I am just a stupid american and I should let only a grocer handle such things and know about such things. Okay.............so we get back to the meat department and I am already primed the pump with the info I discovered yesterday. When I looked in the meat counter.........those lamb were gone and another was in its place. This single lamb was priced at $6.49 a pound. All evidence of yesterday's high priced lambs no where to be seen. Good thing I talked to meat dept clerk yesterday (a witness). So.........the manager says that the warehouse made a mistake on pricing. Well, I would have imagined that the store could easily re-sticker over that price. The store reprices all everyday when they do the mark downs....so why did all the lambs in question disappear? I am sure nobody bought them at that price. So.........the manager writes it off as a warehouse mistake and everybody goes their merry way. Sorry if I got everybody upset but at least I was honest and did try to get an answer and did come back and give you what I found out. I still almost think that if they could have sold it for that price they would have and maybe I wasn't the only one to raise a little stink about it. However.............we all know that this kind of price is for real not far off from being the new norm. So hold onto your hat and prep food like there won't be any tomorrow. |

LindaE User ID: 1415061 United States 07/13/2011 06:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Glad to hear that the pricing was mistaken. I wonder if anyone was dumb enough to buy that mismarked stuff? A year ago my hubby and I started wondering about the availability of meat and other foods down the line a year or two, so we got a grain grinder and started making bread and naan and even pitas. Our tortillas were a no-go. Guess I'd never get married down in Mexico since a girl has to be able to make lovely thin tortillas before she's considered marriageable. Anyhow, we got a book on how to use flour and there was a recipe in it for meat substitute using high gluten flour, water and seasonings. We had to try it. It looks like horse puckey, so we call it cow-paddies, or chicken-paddies. It's easy to make, and seasoned properly with herbs and bouillon it could be a meat substitute, or added to dishes like lasagna to extend the really spendy meat. Remember TVP from the 70s? Only it's healthier since it's not a soy derivitive. |
