Re: Reid: No Social Security checks without debt deal
They'll have plenty of money to pay the interest on the debt (no default) and to mail out SS checks. If it doesn't get paid, it's because they chose not to.

---

Bipartisan Policy Center: U.S. Won't Default on Debt If Congress Fails to Raise Debt Ceiling
But drastic and immediate cuts would occur.

With under a month left until the U.S. hits its statutory limit to borrow more money, Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about what exactly would happen if Congress and the president fail to reach an agreement that raises the debt ceiling.

"Failure to raise the limit would precipitate a default by the United States," wrote Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner earlier this year. No, that's not true, say Republicans. There's enough federal revenue to pay the interest on the debt as well as fund the troops and entitlement programs.

According to a study by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), Treasury could indeed avoid a debt default by prioritizing payments, but failure to raise the debt ceiling would mean deep and immediate cuts.

[excerpt]

The BPC study found that the United States is likely to hit the debt limit sometime between August 2 and August 9. “It’s a 44 percent overnight cut in federal spending” if Congress hits the debt limit, Powell said. The BPC study projects there will be $172 billion in federal revenues in August and $307 billion in authorized expenditures. That means there's enough money to pay for, say, interest on the debt ($29 billion), Social Security ($49.2 billion), Medicare and Medicaid ($50 billion), active duty troop pay ($2.9 billion), veterans affairs programs ($2.9 billion).

That leaves you with about $39 billion to fund (or not fund) the following:

Defense vendors ($31.7 billion)

IRS refunds ($3.9 billion)

Food stamps and welfare ($9.3 billion)

Unemployment insurance benefits ($12.8 billion)

Department of Education ($20.2 billion)

Housing and Urban Development ($6.7 billion)

Other spending, such as Departmens of Justice, Labor, Commerce, EPA, HHS ($73.6 billion)

Do any of you have the faintest idea of what's going on here? Do you care?

The republicans refuse to even participate in a discussion which mentions anything resembling a sacrifice, no matter how tiny from the uber wealthy and monstrous corporations such as a modest tax on CORPORATE JETS! They demand that cutting Social Security and Medicare is where the sacrifices must come from.

Re: Reid: No Social Security checks without debt deal
I have worked since the age of 15. I am now 62 on SSI. Have lived in the same home for 17 years. Now I have my daughter and grand daughter living with me to help me pay the mortgage so we don't lose the family home. Daughter is a waitress with no child support or welfare or other benefits.

So, if the world doesn't end we can all look forward to homelessness, starvation, illness, more unemployment and more crime. Not much to live for.

There are many who are worse off than we are. Just imagine what wonderful things in life they can look forward to.

Giant bank bailouts with no required payback or accountability, TSA, government fraud, unending war, outsourcing our jobs and businesses, importing illegal aliens to rape our country and burden our welfare, medical and educational systems, opening our borders to all, including terrorists and drug cartels...these are the gifts of our mighty government in the name of political correction. OUR MONEY, OUR FREEDOM, OUR COUNTRY destroyed by our government.bump5abump

^^^^^^ That, and ..........

as long as payroll taxes are taken from our checks, they have the money to pay our elderly the Soc Sec they have earned. We are also still paying Fed taxes that will cover other necessary expenses.

Not raising the debt ceiling will force these bozos to live within the means of this country. Guess they may just have to cancel some of their pet projects, get rid of useless agencies & reform the entitlements that have just become an ever increasing, insatiable monster creting an underclass of people who otherwise could have made lives for themselves.

It is sadistic & evil to threaten our elders this way. I wonder how many 85-90 year old Grannys out there are terrified out of their wits by this posturing because they do not understand that the younger people are still working to cover their Soc Sec? Makes me ill!

Just WAIT till Obamacare is held over everyone's heads like a chess piece in a few years - not ONLY will they use SS and Medicare, but you won't get your meds or surgery or treatment on top of it.

CONSIDERING SS & Medicare are supposed to be held in some sort of "lock box" (just like the gold in Ft. Knox <cough, cough>) there should be no issue about these payments being made.

Echoing President Barack Obama's warning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Social Security payments would stop if there is no deal to raise the government's borrowing limit by Aug. 2.

Speaking on the Senate floor, the Nevada Democrat said flatly that payments for veterans benefits and the military, as well as Social Security, would cease if the government defaults on its obligations

To the peanut gallery that don't "get it": There is zero risk of Social Security and Medicare checks not going out if the debt ceiling is not raised for the next three years.

Got it? Zero.

How? Here's how:

That total debt number is the amount subject to the limit, more or less.

But the "Intragovernmental Holdings" is the amount that the Social Security and Medicare trust funds are "owed" by the general fund.

The Treasury can redeem those by selling new bonds into the market in a 1:1 ratio and if they do so they now have dollars in an exactly equal amount.

That's $4.6 trillion dollars.
