I'm not willing to say that the OP was correct concerning his speculation, but I can say without any doubt, that there is something weird going on with this man, and considering everything that has happened since the start of the war there, mainly revolving directly around him, it leaves me with more questions than answers. The strangest thing is the behavior of everyone involved. There are behavioral anomalies happening, that are actually very beneficial to this man, that are completely inexplicable in any logical analysis of the situation. Isis spawning out of the situation into a powerful entity, and then moving away from the fight against Assad, and into Iraq, was/is extremely strange, and again, very beneficial to Assad, because now the super powers that wanted him out, have to focus on the terrorists, instead of him, and it will be hard to get any type of serious traction to take him out, since openly, he seems to be the more rational and western of the two.

I think it is weird that the west forged gas attacks and helped cannibals kill all types of people, but that is just me. maybe my definition of rationality is lacking.

I do wonder if behind the scenes, Assad has actually secretly engaged in sinister treachery, backroom deals, and fence hopping, to secure his current position, of basically being untouchable. If he is actually somehow behind the chaos that we're seeing, the OP might be on to something. There is very little to validate any of this though, aside from a few articles about how Assad was supposedly doing oil deals with isis, and intentionally not hitting isis held territories.
