I live in texas and met a rancher last week, he was hauiling trailer loads of moo moos to the auction. He cant afford to feed them anymore. So this weekend I went by the auction place, (I should have taken my camera)there was trucks lined up for miles ... Pooor cows

I don't know how the situation up here compares but a couple of weeks ago our local grocer had beef roasts on sale 50% off. This is our usual store. I went in to buy and discovered that the sale price was the exact price the same roasts were a few months ago at regular price. So they had doubled in price.

Yes it had been a few months since I had purchased any. I have a big freezer and stock up regularly.

That was a wake up call and of course occurred when my freezer was void of beef. Ugh.

Haven't paid any attention to beef prices, but noticed at the grain elevator that both corn and wheat were well over 7 a bushel. Beans were over 13. With prices like that, it's going to be hard for them to make any profit.

Don't know why more people aren't interested in this, as it will effect more than just the price of ground beef/steaks at the local market.

It will effect restaurants (Big Macs, Whoppers, etc.), hot dogs, spaghetti sauces, you name it.

If this is right, if it's got beef (or beef product) in it, it will more than likely be effected.

This won't just relate to newly priced items, but those already delivered and on the shelf, just as it would with gasoline already in a station's tank when the price of delivered fuel goes up.

I know most of us can grasp that, but there's plenty of people who's mind this would never enter.

I'd imagine it's going to affect other prices too. If beef is too expensive, people will choose chicken, turkey, pork, or whatever. If they can't get that, they'll probably gravitate to other high protein foods. The more demand with less supply, the more prices will rise.

And as a previous post eluded, it seems grain is also being adversely effected here, so it stands to reason that this will also trigger chicken/pork/turkey/tofu/garden burgers etc. prices to rise as the cost to feed/produce it goes north.

Tie that in with people avoiding beef due to its rising cost, and you've got the recipe for a perfect storm.

I know folks are probably getting tired of the 'record heat' doom, but there's more than just being uncomfortable going on here.

Let's group all this in with the destruction of fields due to spring/summer flooding this year and we could see some crazy pricing this fall/winter.

Have you priced any of the other? Bacon from 4.50 up to 7.00 up north, chicken way up. I started warning people two months ago. Glad the media is picking this up, even late.

No, I haven't priced them, but did notice a chicken for 8 dollars and some odd cents. ONE chicken. Have noticed that prices in general have really risen. Doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon, either.

No, you don't have to eat beef but you have to eat something.

A few days ago when it was hot and I was lazy, was going to buy some chicken salad from a place that makes it delicious. It had been 4.99 a lb. This week it was 8.99 a lb. That's how I happened to notice the chicken price. Figured if the salad went up that much, there had to be a reason beyond mayo, cranberries and sour cream. Sure enough. It was the chicken.

Decided I wasn't that hot and lazy so I came home and took one from the freezer. The price on it was 2.83 for a whole chicken.

I have food stored and can pull it from the freezer or off the shelf of what I've canned. What happens to those who don't and can't afford to buy? Have to eat something. It's not just beef that the weather affects. It's everything.

At least US beef isn't radioactive.

Good link. We are not in a drought here in the mid-atlantic, but it has only rained 2 times in the last 7 weeks. Those were downpours during a thunderstorm. The rain did nothing for the ground. It's hard as concrete and the rain just careened right off of it.

IIRC, we've yet to receive over an 1" of rain since January.

This was our first year for having our own veggie garden, and so far, the tomatoes are the only things really producing, and that's been limited.

The cukes and zukes are all dead, and the bell peppers haven't produced anything larger than a lime since mid-May.

Our jalapenos plants are hanging in there, but not producing anymore.

Only reason we still have carrots is because they're in pots I guess.

It seems to be more than just the lack of heat.

The sun seems to actually be burning the leaves of many of the plants.

I've switched to strictly using a soaker hose to make sure there's no water ending up on the leaves, and it hasn't helped.

Guess I picked a bad year to cut back on store bought veggies.

And sniffing glue.
