I didn't file my taxes for 2010. What's going to happen to me?

I didn't file my taxes for 2010. What's going to happen to me?
The deadline of april 15th (or 16th, or whatever, I can't remember) came and went this year, and I FAILED to file my tax returns.

Why? Pure laziness (and some annoyance at the whole process).

I also needed to get a copy of a tax document from an employer and that would have required me to make a few phone calls, and I didn't FEEL LIKE IT.

So now what?

I make $8.00 an hour and probably had a gross income of $15,000 last year, so I'd expect to get a refund.

What's going to happen to me? How long do I have? Can I just wait until next year to file two returns?

Or... should I just not file... ever again?

If you are owed a refund the IRS doesn't really care if you file...it's in your best interest to file and get your money though..the April 15th deadline really only applies if you end up owing money....you aren't in any trouble if you expect a refund.

I had some gambling "winnings" in the order of about $3000. But I also had losses which I would also report, offsetting them.

So it may be that I owe if I don't report the losses.

The times I have owed, it's like a few hundred dollars at the most.

What would happen if I owe money?

BTW, what is the fucking point? ONLY so you can get ass raped. The government knows how much you made, so why do they make you tell them. It obviously part of the scam.

sorry you think i'm lying.....without knowing the specifics of your tax return it'd be hard for me to comment on why you owed with such little income...did you work for yourself? did you owe self employment taxes?

If you owe, then you'll end up paying a nominal late fee plus some interest. The IRS doesn't nail you on interest ..it's like 1 or 2 % a month of what you owe..if you owe, just file and don't send any money....they will send you a letter outlining how much you owe, and you can then set up a payment plan if you need to...you don't have anything to be afraid of....the penalties only get worse the longer you wait to file

Nothing - unless you do something to raise the IRS' attention. If you're owed a refund, you'll NEVER hear from them.

just file...they owe you, most likely, so what's to penalise? They won't give you any interest for having borrowed your money, though....

well, the only thing I can think of is that you didn't have enough withheld from your paychecks...was anyone else claiming you on their taxes?? that would increase your tax liability by not reducing your taxable income...

by the way OP, if you are going to write off gambling losses...your gonna need proof....receipts or something....if you just write off losses equaling wins you might raise a red flag and get audited...did you get a 1099 from the casino or lottery???

After reading the site disclaimer.

If you only owe a few hundred then your probably small and off the radar. They go after the big boys first. But hurry up and pay, the kgb I mean IRS doesn't like to wait too long.

If your wanting to go the "Show me the law" angle then yeah don't pay but it could turn into something where you would have been glad to pay it now.

Trust me I know, I don't report the change I find in my couch.

I'd file right away, esp. if your'e expecting a refund.

And to the person who said "refunds are a thing of the past"- nope! Course, I have kids, so that helps us (my husband works a lot, and makes 10/hour), but still....know plenty of people with no kids that still got some kind of refund for 2010.
