Re: 16 year old son won't play football
My 16 year old son has no direction. He won't play football this year, so I take the keys. Is this right? What the heck, he will get out of school at 4 and football would instill some discipline. He won't even work out with me.

I told him that's fine and be his own person, but I know he's on a downhill slide. Teenagers?

Look, I'm going to be real and straight to the point.

There are a few reasons to why he would not want to play, he feels intimidated by the talent around him and/or is scared, He is on drugs maybe smoking some bud, and/or his friends he is hanging around are influencing him, if they are not on the football team I would step in if I were you. Maybe even a new Girlfriend Is affecting him.

Don't take his keys, sit and have a parent-child conversation with him. See if he wants to play another sport, and don't just let him start slippin either, cuz next thing could be that report card. Don't be scared to be hard on em. Step in while you see the signs now. He is more than likely hiding something.

Screw organized sports organized by adults - it teaches young people nothing.

Your son should be playing pickup games of football, baseball, whatever at the part with friends, without adults screaming at them and directing them from the sidelines.

This is how they learn to organize themselves and solve their own differences and get along or not get along, etc. And they're less likely to get a concussion playing football with friends.

I feel so badly for kids like yours.

No matter what, they will never be allowed to be their own person. They will never live up to your expectations and ideals. They will never do you proud.

You want them to be carbon copy of you- they should do what you like to do, live the life you lived, or wish you lived, and that means FOOTBALL and other assorted dumb jock bullshit.

It would never strike you to let your kid develop into their own person, with their own interests and needs.

You poor son of a bitch.

It's pitiful. For the both of you.

What kind of parent wants concussions and spinal cord injuries for their children.

That was really immature of you to do.

Can he join your girl scout troop? He may get hit by a car pedaling your morsels of processed death.
Maybe he should take up bird watching? No, he may be eaten by a bear.
Flower arranging? May be stung and have a allergic reaction and die.
Fuck it, just keep him locked up in the house.

He is avoiding a, "football knee."

He is side-stepping, "herd/hive mentality."

And, with you the way you are, why would he want to work out with you?

He's further along on the curve.

Barring unhealthy distractions, he will continue to grow past you.

You need to expand your horizons.
You need to get on that asap.

What you did is wrong in so many ways.

What does he like? There's plenty more than football (and before you bitch at me, I was All-Conference first team, All Western-State first team, and All State honorable mention back in the day)...

How about hunting?

How about arrowhead hunting?

How about ham radio operation?

How about raising rabbits/goats/chickens?

How about other survival skills?

How about karate?

How about shooting guns?

How about fishing, fly fishing, spear fishing?

How about archeology?

How about metal detecting?

Gadzooks, man... there are 11-jillion other things than football that teach the same things you want to teach him.

Perhaps, though, that's it. You want him to learn the stuff but YOU don't want to be the teacher -- is that about it? You're too busy for him, is that it?

Fuck sports, get him started on daytrading, send out applications for a summer internship at an investment bank.

He'll retire at age 27 with 100 million in the bank and you can retire too.
