The problem with gunpowder is that it is a finite resource.

Lets look at the recipe:

Black Powder is:
75% Potassium Nitrate
15% Charcoal
10% Sulfur

Charcoal is readily had, if you know how to burn wood in such a manner to were it chars instead of actually burns. For the record few people have ever done this in modern types, they go and buy charcoal for their BBQ.

Sulfur:Can be made from sulfur dioxide (SO2) and/or hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Tell me do you know where to get these two?

Now its true, sulfur is mined, do you know of any sulfur mines in your area?

Potassium Nitrate is the fun one. Every hear of Bat guano... ok get yourself some bat guano and then process it to Potassium Nitrate.

The above is the good old fashion gunpowder used in flintlocks and early western bullets.

Today we use smokeless powder:

1. Salt Peter(best) or Urea 60%
2. Sulfur 15%
3. Calcium Carbonate 25%

we covered Sulfur (I do hope you have a volcanic vent nearby, makes sulfur collecting far easier)

Urea comes from kidneys - Piss - It's technical name is
Ammonium cyanate Its a fun process, requires lots and lots and lots of piss.

Perhaps if you decide to tan leather the old fashion way, you will have enough piss left over to process out the Urea.

Calcium Carbonate can be had from limestone, if you know how to process it to the purity needed. The best source is calcite or aragonite inland.

If you live by the edge of the ocean, then you are in luck. The non-shiny part of shells is pure calcium carbonate.


Now its true, modern gunpowder can last 100 years and be stable if it is stored correctly. In truth much of it will be destroyed in the opening months of Anarchy, unless you are storing a lot of it already?

When TSHTF people are going to use up their bullets pretty damn fast.

then its the people with the older tried and true technologies that rise to the top.

Unless you are a chemist and have a stock pile of the ingredients laying about, Gunpowder will not be around more than 2-5 years tops.
