It refers to a cosmological and metaphysical theory which is nor purely creationism neither evolutionism. The Gnosis is mainly in this terms an emanatism: world emanates from the One, the Supreme God, in a serie of hyposthasis or "realities", from the higher ones (the Cosmical Soul, the Intelligence...) to the lower ones (the souls of the creatures, the forms of the material beings...). Yahveh, in this scheme, is an intermediate reality, some kind of Intelligence which puts the chaotic matter in an order according to the Eternal Ideas or Archetypes...

For what I know about the subject, it was believed that the Supreme God ("The One" in Plotin) is so transcendental that cannot be really known by ourselves, but only via negative theology. In this way, they insist God is far away from all realities, and for that cause He Himself couldn't be involved in the creation or to give an order to the lower matter directly, that's was the task of the subsequent emanations. The one who gives matter an order, Yahveh, Jehovah, the Demiurg, the Intelligence... he has different names, is the god of this lower reality, the material world. Not he is really evil, but imperfect, that's why world is imperfect too. The cathars (christian puritanical heressy) believed Jehovah was the same as Satan and therefore this world we live is evil. They believed in the Supreme God.

you really read the Bible...? moabites, ammonites, were semitical people, in fact related to hebrews (the Bible says they were descendants of Moab and Ammon (or Ben Ammi), sons of Lot with his own daughters... not worth to repeat here the story, I think). Canaanites and philistines were camitical people.
